Vizio E422VA - no picture, logo or backlight

The TV started flickering (or flashing) while it was on and being used (as reported by my son - I wasn't around). The TV was turned off. But couldn't be turned on using the remote.

When plugged in, the indicator LED remains dim, like in stand by mode. None of the buttons on the TV or remote have any effect. There is no 'V' logo, no picture, no sound and no back light. I have tried power recycle as per Vizio tech support - no help. They said they can fix it for $180 - but I want to avoid that route.

What could be wrong? Is it power supply board - I hope because I already ordered a replacement at good price.

Re: Vizio E422VA - no picture, logo or backlight

I checked the voltages at a cable connector on power board which seems like the output going to the main board. I checked the 5 volts pins against the ground - they show 5.11 volts. However the 12V and the 24v pins don't show any.

Is it that the main board is responsible for "turning on" the power board using those 5v terminals? If that is so, does it mean that the main board fails to "kick start" the power board? I am not an expert, but it seems that if that is indeed the case, I need to focus on the main board. But I only see SMDs and other components that look like capacitors every where on the main board - is there something I can do there to fix this TV?

Also, there are no bulging capacitors on any of these boards - no smell of burn out or anything. Also, when left plugged in, none of the heat sinks on power board are hot.

I will really appreciate any guidance here!

Take the DC voltage and report the readings for each pin of CN902, make sure to list the name of each pin. Take the readings when TV is plugged in but not turned ON, and when the power switch is activated.

Re: Vizio E422VA - no picture, logo or backlight

Here are the DC voltages of CN902.

There were no differences in the readings of CN902 at plug-in (not turned on) and power switch on (by pressing the power button on the TV)

        ON/OFF 0.0 Pin 1
        PDM 0.0
        +12v 2.9mV
        +12v 2.9mV
        GND
        GND
        GND
        24v 4.1mV
        24v 4.1mV
        PSON 0.0
        5v 5.11v
        5v 5.11v
ACD Voltage was increasing when the multi-meter terminal applied to it starting
from 0 to 280mV going onwards...

I used the GND of the CN902 as ground.

The main board is not sending the PSON to turn on the power supply, so the main board is not working correctly.

According to shopjimmy, there is WIFI card in this TV.
I would disconnect the cable to the WIFI card and see if you can turn the TV ON, if not then try disconnecting the cable to the T-CON board and see.

There is a fuse on the main board you can check.

the blue inductor you can measure the voltage on those, they should range from 1.7vdc to 5vdc.

I tried both in that order. No joy.

this is a smart TV right?
Yes, this is a smart TV. I measured the voltages across the inductors - no voltage there - it is in mV.

Also, the fuse continuity is ok - is it the one that you indicated on the board with a red arrow next to the connector?

Those inductors are for switching power supplies. So some of them are not working if you are getting any voltage or it can be that some of them runs off the 12V but since the power supply is not turned on to provide the 12V for them to run.

Yes, that's what I think too - the 12v supply is missing. I heard back from ShopJimmy guys - they say that the main board is faulty and needs replacement.

Yes - those on the eBay go for $120 - $130 range. These are used ones salvaged from TVs that were not otherwise working due to damaged screen. Question is though are they reliable?

I will only get it if they have return policy, too many of them claimed that boards are tested and in good working condition, but it is still too much for 42" TV.

Did you ever end up having any luck?

I ran into a similar problem with this model. Screen will turn on and then tv will power off after some time. The power light will blink but no controls (remote or on tv) will do a thing. I looked for obvious signs such as bulging capacitors or burnt out circuits. I may need to buy an volt tester since my is over 1000 miles away as I'm at school. Any advice would be great.

I am a newbie to this stuff and would appreciate any help. I tried all the basic stuff in forums throughout the net.

                                  Thanks.

I tried all the basic stuff in forums throughout the net.

this may help if you know how solder and if you have the right board.

Well, I had to buy a new main board and that solved my problem. I bought the main board on Ebay and replaced it myself. I had called the Vizio tech support and they had suggested to fix the problem by installing a new board for $80.

Looking back I think I should have gone for the official Vizio fix because the EBay board doesn't let me run the Netflix app. Apparently this EBay board was previously used and registered by someone else and I couldn't convince the Vizio to update their database because the serial number was in use by someone else in their database.

you can clear out the previous customer information by accessing the Vizio menu then: go to help> then clear memory> then enter 0000. this reset the TV back to factory, then you can enter your information if you chose too. the board serial number shouldn't matter to Netflix.

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

                                          Hi.

picked up another TV. This time is a Vizio M65-C1. TV does not turn on. I had repaired another 60 inch vizio , Bad main board.
When power button is pressed, the Power led indicator on the bottom right, turns for a few seconds and then it fades away. No backlight or Vizio logo on screen. Removed back cover and repeated test.
This is the TV This TV is a little different from the Samsung I have worked on. Power supply is on the Left side, Main Bd is on the right side, T-CON , not in the picture is on the bottom. I am assuming that the boards in the middle are the LED...

All left and right refers to looking from rear of TV (or looking from front with TV upside down)
                                          • TV came with vertical bars and no image. Found faulty TVS on left buffer board. Also replaced T-Con (may have damaged the original while hot air removing components, board has slight warp) and have full image but few horizontal lines on the screen. Some of the lines appears to be 2 pixel tall while others are 1 pixel tall.
                                          • Disconnecting left and right buffer board potentially reveals problems on both sides with different signals (unless this T-Con require jumper like Samsung FB_TRDY1&3) Fault

I picked up a Vizio E70-E3 for free that shows Vizio logo and then goes to a black screen. Original owner said he started having wifi issues and then he tried to reset the TV and that's when it wouldn't boot up any longer after his reset attempt. I picked up a replacement main board from eBay that matches the same model # board as the original from the TV.

Original main board - Shows Vizio logo when TV powers on, then goes to black screen. Doesn't boot up. No screen issues with any lines on start up Vizio logo.
