I cut the INV_ERR and BALANCER_ERR wires, connected each to a resistor, and grounded each resistor to the chassis separately. I got the same error. Also on teh same plug are labeled wires BACKLIGHT_ON/OFF, GND, and DIMMER if those are somehow related. As expected the BACKLIGHT is hot until it shuts off. DIMMER, also as expected, seems to correspond with the intensity of the backlight while it's on. There is also a INV_ERR going/coming from each of the power boards that service the inverters (D5 and D4Z).

Hey, thanks Pragmatiko, unfortunately, that service manual doesn't list the 4100 series in it's coverage. I wish it was just an HDMI error, as that would mean only a main board swap.

Ha, so Pragmatiko's service manual was inadvertently correct? OK, I'll check out ebay. Unfortunately, the serial number is missing (label was rubbed off) and I know sony can be a real pain with using different parts with the same model. I'll do my best to buy the right board and report back when I get it. Thanks for all the help!

As an aside, I went to the e-waste bin yesterday, and my heart stopped for a second when I saw a 70" Sharp Elite sitting there. Screen was cracked in the far corner though, and I can't imagine what a replacement panel for that would cost.

Wow. Amazing, people manage to break even the nicest sets. What e-waste bin was that? Ones here are patrolled by security & CCTV, you can't have anything!

I don't want to put it out there publicly because the guy on duty lets me take stuff even though I'm not supposed to because he's super libertarian about things. It's in New Jersey in an area where people are pretty wealthy (think The Sopranos), where I'm working for the season. I pick up all the recycling I find in the woods while at work and that's my excuse for swinging by.

Last quick question about ordering this board, because I've had bad luck ordering sony boards before. I can find tons of boards that match the model number of the TV that look identical to the one I have. I can also find ones that have the same board and part #s of the one I have, but have an extra plug soldered on that my board doesn't have. Which should I choose. I'm leaning towards the latter ones, but they seem to be *mostly* for the 46" model. What do you think?

I'd order only the 52 inch ones, for some reason Sony TVs seem to check the EEPROM on the T-con to verify they are exactly matched.

OK, I got one for 100 with free shipping and a 20% restocking fee if I return. Same Panel. Here's a question I've been wondering. How does an LCD panel go bad? It seems like, shy of cracking, how else can they break? I don't mean the backlight or any of that, just the panel. I'll update when I get the board and install it.

Generally the drivers on it can go bad, they are attached to the bonds so not replaceable.

I would say t-con or panel, t-con being very likely. Notice how the bands on the picture don't follow where you'd expect the tabs to be so unlikely to be panel. Probably SONY MOTIONFLOW processor failing on T-con board.

Yoicks, I got home today and threw the new board in there. Same thing. Anything else I should try before I return the BU board?

Do you still get voltages on BALANCER ERR or INV ERR?

BALANCER_ERR remains at 0 throughout the whole process. INVERTER_ERR stays at 1.977 while plugged in and drops to .028 once turned on. When it shuts itself off, it spikes to .3/.4 and then works its way down to 0.00. This is with the normal wiring, and not with the resistors in place.
