I would be thinking about INV ERR but it might be spiking as it powers off or it might be a very quick spike your meter cannot detect. So it's hard to be sure.

Tom, what is the difference between balancer and inverter?

Balancer balances a fixed supply between all bulbs equally.
Inverter generates a supply for each bulb separately, which is balanced.

Is there anything else I should be trying? Are these worth toying with?
Going to the D4Z board from the main G5 power board is a plug that has these pins: BALANCER_ERR, REG12V, GND, INV_ERR, BACK_LIGHT, DIMMER, GND
And going from the D5 board from the D4Z board are is a plug with the pins: OCP2, INV_DRV_1L, GND, INV_DRV_1H, GND, V-FB1, GND, VCC(12V)
There is also a second plug going between the main and the power board with a litany of REG12V, UNREG15V and such if those would be helpful.
          Thanks again!

Also, Tibimakai, if it's not possible to get this unit up and running you can have the TCON for the TV you posted for the cost of shipping.

Thanks, but I already replaced it and the TV is working(the 46").
That one in the picture it's gone, I haven't picked it up.
Lately I have to replace all the Sony main boards and even some Samsung ones too.
I wouldn't be surprised, that yours may need to be replaced too.

Did you get a T-con or main board?

I replaced the main because it seemed as though it was throwing a false error. Error persists though, but I have a while before I have to return it. I'm learning a lot about this stuff from all the help I get here, but I'm still fairly clueless on my own. I've managed to fix a SONY 46BX420 that wouldn't power on by swapping the main board, and a Samsung 32 something-something by swapping the powerboard out which had all kinds of cap damage, cracked resistors, and burning on one of the heatsinks. With these not-obvious component level problems though, I'm lost.

I'm not an expert myself, but I have managed with these guys help to repair a couple of TVs.
I would check the tubes(ccfl), inverter transformers, make sure they are showing the same resistance with in 3%.
I have just found this one:

You are sure you have a good board? You can't trust Ebay boards.
Recently I had a couple "good" boards returned. I have got other ones, from retech.com and those fixed the TVs. Both Sonys with T-con and mainboard issues. Actually the KDL-46W4100 needed the mainboard and the KDL-40V4100 the T-con.

I have no way of testing to see if the main I purchased is OK or not. Same story, cracked screen but everything else functions fine, etc etc.
                        Is there a way?

Tell to the seller that it's not good and send it back. Get another one, from somebody else.

But...I'm not sure that it's bad. Or if the main was really even the problem.

It is hard to tell. But some people get frustrated with their broken TV and hit it. They break the screen, drop it off at the recycle, someone picks it up, assumes the boards are good and that's how dodgy boards get on eBay and other sites.

If it didn't fix your issue, then assume that it's a bad board.

I realize that, and I'm going to go ahead and return the board anyway, as it didn't fix the issue. It's a $20 restocking fee, which is no big deal. My question is, how sure are you that the main board is the issue, and I don't, in fact, have a bad panel? Should I tell them it's defective and try to get a full refund? What are symptoms of a panel with bad drivers or one that is otherwise nonfunctional? There are no lines or anything on it when it powers up. Does the 14 blink code definitely originate from one of the inverter boards and not from the Tcon board? Would it help if I posted a video?

Thanks again guys, sorry to always be second guessing.

Hey folks. The seller said he's extend the return period if I like so I could do more testing and such. Any input? Or just go ahead and return it?

There's some pretty good reading here. Specifically pg76-81, and 57-68. Leads me to believe that it the error isn't generated from the INV_ERR or BALANCER_ERR circuits. So my only option left would be a TCON (considered part of the panel), short of replacing the panel itself (not happening). If anybody seconds this after reading through, I'll give a TCON a shot.
                                        Thanks again folks.

Hey guys, quick question as I have a few free hours to get back to this set:
I'm going to start testing the inverters. There are like a million of them. I'm going to set my multimeter on 2 or 20 AC Volts, put one probe on gnd and one on the test pad. If I get one that read's too high or too low when the backlight comes on, I will mark that transformer. Can I do this with the TCON unplugged? The set will stay on for a few minutes before shutting down that way. Otherwise its just a few seconds.

                                          Sound good thus far?

My question is: Once I determine which ones are bad, how do then determine whether it's the transformer or the bulb?

                                          Thanks again for the help!
