    capacitor with no esr value

    Hello folks
I have come across a capacitor 47uf 50v for a tv power supply with no esr value in curcuit or out of curcuit.cap is not bulged all other caps are have good values I am using EDS 88A capanalyzer I am very new to this so I am assuming this cap is no good. am I right

Problem with TV is that it has green light on power nothing on screen.

"No ESR"? Does that mean 0 ohms or infinite ohms?

Re: capacitor with no esr value

I get no reaction from meter at all. Meter is supposed to go thru a discharge then check
dcr then I get esr value according to uf value in this case is 47uf nothing happens on meter when I connect probe to cap

I say replace it, they are quite cheap components and can cause this fault.

Well if it's not there that why my TV won't work. I will remember this terminology now if I can only find the the cap that will fit.

              Thanks kc8adu

Re: capacitor with no esr value

that value cap sounds like a startup cap,50v caps should read around 1 ohm on esr, normally 0.00 ohm esr would be a great value for lower voltage caps, sounds like this one has dried up showing open circuit.

Well I ordered the cap lets hope this 13 cent cap will fix 32" tv that I bought for $25.00.
What do you mean by a startup cap? is it a capacitor that remains in-circuit during both start-up and running ?
Thanks for your imput multimeter. All info helps.

depending on the circuit, the startup cap normally delivers its voltage to a 8 pin power ic ,it will be working throughout startup and running, sometimes when this cap fails it will cause a chirping sound to be heard on the psu

Re: capacitor with no esr value

The controller IC (8 pins usually, sometimes more or less) needs about 10-12V DC of power, from 115/230V input.

In order to provide this a high value resistor charges up the cap and a zener regulates it. Once the voltage reaches a set point determined by the controller, the controller starts using the energy in this cap to run and turn the output on.

Once running an auxillary winding takes over and provides power to the controller IC, like an alternator in a car supplies power to recharge the battery.

The cap is most important in the brief time at which energy is being drained from it by the controller IC, but no energy is being provided to it. If its capacitance is too low (or in some cases if ESR is way too high) it will be like a car with a flat battery, unable to start. And you will hear a characteristic ticking from the PSU sometimes.

I think your capacitor is shorted.
I have the ESR Micro v4 and within the manual the following explanation is given when capacitors measure zero for esr

Extracts from ESR Micro V4 manual

"If the capacitor is shorted (DC resistance is equal to 0), then «R ONLY» - “Resistor!” will be displayed on the
lower line and the symbol “E” in the top row is changed to “R”. The majority of ESR meters detecting this failure will
indicate a capacitor with an ESR = 0. The same symbols are displayed while low-ohms resistors are checked.

i cannot see this, normally i replace bad caps with panasonic fr/fm/fc series, ive had fr series caps that are genuine, bought from well known suppliers,i always test there esr value before i fit them, some in the 16v 25v range show an esr of 0.00 ohm ,ultra lower than low!when the caps that needed to be replaced, are in excess 0f 4 and higher ohms esr,the panasonic fr's when fitted fire the equipment straight up ,no problems, only other alternative,is that the cap he is testing esr on,is in circuit,(said in op that also out of circuit) and there is something else showing a possible short, the proof is in the pudding,if unsure then i would be setting my dmm meter to diode test and measuring across the pads in circuit, and should show some forward voltage drop with the cap in place, and this will also do a "kick" test at the same time,an analog meter set to X10 k will give a more accurate test,or an insulation test.

I saw measurements of 0 on Nichicon HZ 3300uF 6.3... they're really low esr

Otherwise most of the Panasonic FM I tested are 0.01 with some of the smaller ones (100uF, 47uF) showing 0.06 or something like that.
The lowest I measured from the parts I have around here was a Nichicon HC 10uF at 0.6 ohm and some G-Luxon 22uF 50v I recovered from an old motherboard at 1.4 ohm

Hi people, I hope this is the correct spot to post this, I'm new to the forum.

I have an RTX 3080 Founders Edition which has a burnt up capacitor (it was in parallel with another capacitor which appears damaged too), so I am hoping to be able to identify the capacitor values and order replacements.

I hope these photos make it clear which component I am referring to:
(yes, the soldering is a bit botched from removing the blown one, I know)

I have found the board schematic (attached), but there does not seem to be a boardview available. I have never...

If I replace with inferior capacitor, Is it No harm to other IC components at all?
                                          by chth96
I replaced some capacitor which is located on optical pickup pcb which is shown in the table below(PCB #2).Because it have been out of order.
Now,It works very well,But I just have found that all caps (6svpc100my and other part number as well) ,which is shown in the table below, has ultra-high ripple current spec.
It is not able to obtain any capacitor which can be a substitute for this ultra-high ripple current nichicon capacitor.
So I replaced it with samxon and rubycon's general capacitor(GP,YXA series).
I know that these capacitor will not last as long as nichicon capacitor...

How can I test non-polarized capacitor?
                                          by chth96
I desoldered samwha NF capacitor(50v 5.6uf) from PCB circuit of 29inch CRT TV which have symptoms of no display after I heard sound of inrush of current to TV whenever I switch on this television.
I measured ESR value of this non-polarized capacitor(samwha NF capacitor 50v 5.6uf) by means of MESR-100 ESR meter and It displayed 0.3 ohm

And When I measured its capacitance with digital multimeter and LCR-T4 Mega328 meter, It displayed 10uf from DMM and 8uf from LCR-T4 meter.
I found catalogue of samwha capacitor(samwha-catalogue_3.pdf file), which is attached to this thread,...

Is it no harm to replace with capacitor without ripple current rating?
                                          by chth96
When I tried to repair LG 29 inch CRT TV, I found that the ESR value of samyoung SMS capacitor(160v 2.2uf), which is very close to D1879 transistor, is 6 ohm.

Judging from above ESR Meter Table,I think It is necessary to replace this sms capacitor. So I visited local electronics shop, and I purchased 160v 2.2uf rubycon YK capacitor.
But when I browse through rubycon YK datasheet,I found that there is no ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf specification. But On the contrary, I found 39 mA ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf SMS capacitor.
                                          Rubycon YK DataSheet (b...

                                          Should I replace polymer capacitor?
                                          by chth96
a few days ago I finally purchased mser-100 v2 and I tested its abillity of measuring ESR value.
I found that It shows pretty accurate ESR value for electrolytic capacitor,But When I measure polymer capacitor of dreamcast game console,I found that one third of polymer capacitor's ESR value is more than twice the value of ESR meter table.(for example, I measured one polymer capacitor of 6.3v 100uf, It showed ESR value of 7.68)
Although my dreamcast now turns 20 years old but it still works. I occasionally have played game with it.
Is this ESR value of polymer capacitor correct?...
