replied to HP BIOS unlock tool
Re: HP BIOS unlock tool

Big thanks to everyone here for their great posts.
I have a HP640g1 which was bios locked with a forgotten password from a couple of years ago. Followed the instruction from post 1. All good now.
Did run into a few problems but that was user error (Myself).
Laptop now with unlocked bios.
I have now experimented with both unsoldering the bios chip and using the SOIC clip method.
My problems encounted was poor resoldering of the chip back which looked good under a magnifying glass but was bad as all i got was a black screen,...

• Re: Dell Inspiron N5010 no video with 8 beeps

Recently given a Dell 5010 which had been dropped and gave 8 beeps with no display.
Plugging in an external monitor would show the display and the beeps would stop. Entering the diagnostics screen via the F12 key at post also confirmed that the video card and screen passed tests but the LVDS cable was not found - test failed.
Found that the LVDS cable had come loose from the socket located underneath the keyboard.
Laptop works great now

Was given one of these models a month ago with similar problems.
First repaired the tab problem then about a day later encounted the picture going solarised with occasional very bright white screen. A new TCon from ebay china seller fixed that.
Currently awaiting for some AS15 chips to replace on the old TCon.

• Re: DC Jack replacement - tips?

I did one recently using a hot air station. The hot air station i have is a cheap ebay under 100 GB pounds which seems good for my needs. My method was lots of flux. Heat the station at 350C and heat the socket underneath. The socket was very easily removed. I then used a 60w soldering iron and solder sucker to clean the holes.
Like the posts above the key thing is enough heat.

• Re: Diode replacement advice

Switched of my stb as budm advised. This was however after about 6 hrs and without problems. The new 1n4007 diodes arrived yesterday so i replaced all of them. The stb has now been running for 24hrs without any hissing noise or problems.

Many thanks

• Diode replacement advice

I recently noticed a high pitch noise coming from our cheap Asda Alba ST102 freeview STB. Its a very cheap STB which we use in our kitchen. We have noticed no other problems but the high pitch noise which has been very annoying.
I opened the casing and this noise seem to come from the 22uf 400v capacitor.
Apart from this noise the capacitor seemed OK. It measured 25uf with an esr of 1.25ohms measured out of circuit with my esr micro V4.
I ordered some new Panasonic capacitors of the same rating from RS.
Today i replaced the capacitor and totally balls this simple job....

Re: AMILO L 6820 bios recovery

Just Checked and the last Fujitsu laptop that i worked on was a Amilo L6825 laptop.

Very sure now that your bios chip is behind the keyboard and within a socket.
You will need to go to youtube and search for replacing the keyboard. This will then teach you how to remove the keyboard. Once the keyboard is removed you may see the bios chip or it will be behind a metal sheild fixed by some screws.

Do research first so you no what a PLCC32 bios chip looks like then you will no what you are looking for.

Re: AMILO L 6820 bios recovery

Seen a few corrupt bioses after updates. The Fujisu ones that i have worked on all go completly dead eg no lights, fans etc
Normally you can do a crisis bios recovery with a floopy or usb pen drive if the boot block is not corrupt.
When the boot block becomes corrupt then the laptop is completly dead.

If this is the problem with yours then there is still a solution.
You normally will find the bios chip behind the keyboard inside the Fujitsu laptops. They normally are PLCC32 bios chips which are installed...

• Re: capacitor with no esr value

I think your capacitor is shorted.
I have the ESR Micro v4 and within the manual the following explanation is given when capacitors measure zero for esr

Extracts from ESR Micro V4 manual

"If the capacitor is shorted (DC resistance is equal to 0), then «R ONLY» - “Resistor!” will be displayed on the
lower line and the symbol “E” in the top row is changed to “R”. The majority of ESR meters detecting this failure will
indicate a capacitor with an ESR = 0. The same symbols...

• Re: Which cap to replace kzg - Biostar AF4ST-A9

The new HZ series caps arrived a couple of days ago from badcaps. From order to delivery to the UK was 8 days. Very happy with ordering from badcaps.

I took the old KZG caps out. I wanted to test all the caps removed. Unfortuntatly the vented cap was difficult and one of the legs broke. I was therefore unable to test this cap.
The other removed caps all tested OK with the esrmicro.
Also had a few problems with unblocking the holes on the motherboard. I was using a 60W soldering iron but still struggled...

Many thanks for your post and advice.

Did loads of searching and reading on posts last night but was still a little unsure.
I have placed order for the HZ series ones recommended from badcaps.net

Must say the delivery cost seems very good for international post.

Thanks for your time in helping - Very much appreciated...

• Which cap to replace kzg - Biostar AF4ST-A9

I have Biostar NF4st-A9 socket 939 motherboard which our kids use.
Its been working great for many years.
Recently when using, the PC just freezes randomly which then requires the power to be switched off to reboot.
Thought originally that the PSU was failing so tried with a spare PSU. When replacing the PSU i did notice that one of the KZG 3300uf 6.3v caps by the CPU looked very slightly domed on top.
Tried the spare good PSU to test and the same problem is there.
Pretty sure now that the caps near the cpu maybe bad.

The motherboard also has some...

• Re: Biostar GeForce 6100-M9

I think caps failing on the Biostar 6100-M9 is quite common. From memeory the 5 caps 3300uf near the cpu is common to go bad. I did a re-cap to one sometime ago.

I corrupted the bios on my toshiba laptop a few weeks ago.
I used a method called crisis recovery which required just a floppy usb drive. This site here http://punj-technology.blogspot.com/2011/08/toshiba-corrupt-bios-recovery.html

• Re: Can one faulty cap in parallel with working cap cause problems?

You need to remove the faulty cap and get it replaced. Soldering the cap in parellel will increase the cap value eg faulty cap value plus the new one in parrellel

• Re: Bulged top on MS 6547 ver2 (654E maxU)

I re-capped a biostar socket 939 recently which gave a blank screen and continous bleeps from the speaker. Got it resolved by clearing the cmos settings by shorting the reset pins on the board as stated on the manual. Have you tried re-setting the cmos?
