Los Angeles is big, so there are a lot of broken TVs here.
There are weeks when I can't find anything though.
I'm willing to drive far sometimes, like 60-70 miles away.
I have sold nine TVs in two months-since I started repairing TVs- and I have kept two more for myself. I have five more to repair.
From now on I have to select which one I pick up and which one I will let go. I will try to avoid plasmas, they tend to be expensive to repair, older TVs then 2007 and cheap brands. Course the size matters too, from 32" and up, at least for now.
Sometimes we are in bidding war, who gives more for the seller gets the TV.
I had one 42" Philips plasma which it listed in the free section and I ended up paying $20 for it just so that I will get it.
Same with this problematic Vizio. If I have known this panel issues...

Yep, you are flying through tv's. Im lucky if i see 3 a month on craigslist here.

I did have a incredibly easy 24" samsung tv/monitor that just had a loose lvds cable. The lady had it listed for free, and even delivered it to me, she wanted to get rid of it lol. Ill probably post pics of the samsung one day when im bored as it took me 1 hr just to get it open, but the repair was like 5 minutes of testing lol. Nothing in the set was screwed down, the whole set had like 4 screws total. ... I wonder why the lvds cable was able to come loose....

That is what we need, but I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap a repair like this, plus shipping to Turkey and back.
I see that retiredcaps has the same issue as us, so the crowd it's growing.
I have another Sony in which most likely I have to replace at least a ccfl tube(s). A Toshiba which pops and a Vizio which it seams that I'm unable to fix the power supply. So I have a lot of "fun".

I wish this place actually existed ... lol it sounds to good to be true.

Ive never tried to remove or replace the polarizer, but Id assume it is very hard to get off without some serious chemicals. Then again maybe it just scrapes right off with a razorblade? but then youd probably end up scratching the lcd panel that is under the polarizer...

Ive not had a failed tv repair yet (now that i got this sony working ) , but maybe if you have a broken screen tv you could try it on that without risking a good tv.


Maybe one day topcat will hire us all, and we can line up like the picture of the testing area at this company

Thank you for sharing. I may try it in the next couple of days, it's just that I have other TVs with less issues which could go out of the door much faster.
I have another question, do you think that it would be possible to remove the glare layer from a 46" TV? I have read some laptop forums where people did this, but those screens are small to work with and there is a high chance of messing up the screen. I'm thinking that it's probably even bigger chances with this huge screen.
I have some scratches in two spots and it would be a lot easier to sell the TV without scratches.

I finally got it soldered together... It tooks 3 tabs before i got a good lasting connecting between 1 of the tabs and the wire running to the resistor.

The tabs have copper (maybe...) traces inside of some sort of plastic. The plastic is really high temp proof/ temp resistant, cause the soldering iron could be left it contact with it for very long amounts of time. Trying to shave off the plastic coating to get to the traces with a razor blade didnt work at all for me. And if you stuck a needle through you didnt get great lasting contact, and there would be no where for the needle to go once the tv was assembled. But the needle was good for peircing the tab, so that I could try to pick the trace out of the plastic, and eventually i just made a hole, stuck the 28 guage wire through the hole and a lot of flux, and then tryed like hell to get the solder to stick to anything.

I used foam tape to hold the 2 soldered wires firmly in place so i wouldnt jar them while reassembling. then i put it all back together and covered the resistor with electrical tape. (My wires were already insulated so i only needed to insulate the resistor.

Once back together it still worked ... just have to find some way to live with the extremly dark scenese (an issue with the firmware and design of the TV, not a broken part)... The firmware update i applied was suposed to fix that, but it still is a horrible horrible picture on any show that isnt super bright. Kids shows look amazing on it. Court room shows are so dark you cant see anything but peoples eyes and teeth. (exageration)... (this is probably only a problem with some of the more feature rich sony models specifically my kdl-40s5100) they sell this worthless feature as dynamic scene contrast or something.

There is the long thin boards that run at the top of the LCD panel (for simplicity lets call it the lcd panel board).

Assuming you have made a good connection to the tcon / and have cleaned the ribbon cables, then their should be a lot of various voltages present on the thin lcd panel board. On mine and the 32" they are marked fairly clearly, with a bunch of other voltage test points around the same place. Voff was around 7 volts, and vON was around 20.3 volts on mine (19v on the 32" model in the how to video).

The thin lcd panel board then has antistropic conductive film connected to it which runs through out the lcd. (the antistropic conductive film is the technical term for tabs). Thery are just glued onto the thin lcd panel board at the top. You can apply pressure to them and see if that reconects the fauly glue.

The fix requires you run a 10ohm resistor from the v0N (~ 19v) to a dot on a tab on the side. It is the upper dot thats closest to the screen. The video clearly shows which dot. If you look closely at the tab, the outer most trace that runs all the way around the tab is ground. The next trace is the v0N which leads to the first test point.

When i tried reading the voltage of just the tab where i peirced it, there was no reading, but its very hard to get the pin to make good contact.

I will have to check on the LCD model number when I get home.
On mine I have darker left with ghosting and a darker center section.
If I let it run for a couple of minutes the picture disappears and colorful(more green then others) vertical lines appear, it looks like a t-con board failure.
Basically where do you solder that resistor on the ribbon cable there shouldn't be any voltage and if there is then my problem is different?
Or when I flex the TV the voltage should come on and off on that point?

The 46 and 52" ones that have tab bonding issues are made by samsung's panel factory. They usually only have ghosting towards 1 side.

The 32" that this repair was originally show for and my 40" have this slightly different issue where the whole screen ghosts and so might be made by a different manufacturer.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-KDL-40S...item256e429342 is the tcon for my model, i think only 1 brand uses etron tech and view-wise cpu's ... Im not sure who makes this panel, but i have a feeling it might not be the samsung factory, but something cheaper.

Yours since it responds to flex might be more related to the issue with 42" and 52" samsung panels.

Can you identify what brand of panel is in your vizio?

BTW i didnt use a 10ohm resistor when testing the fix on mine, because i didnt have one around and its 2am. I just used 30feet of 28 ohm wire , which equals roughly 2 ohms of resistance. So the resistance cant be too precise, but probably better to be safer with a higher ohm resistor.

This fix is the same for every TV?
You really have space there and you have only that many TVs
I have six TVs in my garage(2x 46", 1x42", 2x37", 1x40") and I had to let go to another one today because I don't have room. It was a 40" Sam sung plasma which popped and lost the video, for $50. Actually yesterday I hd seven TVs, I sold a 40" Sony smart TV for $450(yes!!).
After this I will have to take apart that 40" Sony's panel and check for bad ccfl tube.

But i believe you have 2 attempts to solder vON, (1 on each side), (i destroyed the first trace while attempting to solder a too large wire). And you have 8 tabs on the sides, and im pretty sure they all have the proper place to try to solder / peirce the tab .(I destroyed 1 tab slightly by making the peirced hole to big...)

I honestly have no clue how so many people were successful with the 32" models, as this is extremely hard soldering ...

BTW bellow is a picture of my testing area, to prove i really took that video, i have no reason to lie to yall. Its also more to make tibi jealous of the amount of space i have to lay out tv's.

I dont endorse or know this method works.

On the thread where tibi was considering buying a 40 inch sony i showed him a video of what a bad panel ghosting would look like, then i also said

"This video shows a fix for 32" models that i though was fake when i was looking at the videos 6 months ago, but now theres like 10 videos showing the same fix, and giving all the info (the original video wanted you to pay 5 dollars for the secret info...)

Basically there was a youtube video that showed a soldered wire running from the top lcd panel strip / board to 1 of the tabs on the side, and in the comments in really bad english it asked for you to pay 5 dollars for this secret trick to fix it. So I figured this was bullshit.

6 months later from when i saw the original video there are now like 10 videos on youtube with people showing exactly what to do for free, and saying it fixed their tv.

Im at work so i cant watch the video here, but maybe its a 10 ohm resistor and not a 10 watt resistor (i probably just misspoke). But it seems reasonable that while traveling through the panel 10 ohms of resistance might be created. And it also seems reasonable that whatever connection comes loose with these tab bonding issues, it is probably something like a power source for clearing the pixels that is common to everywhere on the screen, but since the ghosting seems to fade from 1 side to the other, this voltage is fed to the screen in multiple places but decreases across the screen from the resistance that prevents it from traveling to the other side. perhaps the panel has connections for this voltage source in multiple places. So finding the closest place to the disconnected area that you can easily solder a wire to feed this voltage to the screen seems like it might possibly work to fix the problem.

I sure like to know about the 10Watts resistor trick since the T-CON board itself uses less than 10 watts of power, where would that 10 Watts be coming from. Something does not sound right.

You have a bad panel and the foam tape will work sometimes but It won`t last.

I have had a few of these and they worked with the foam pending temp, humidity, and every other Thursday.

Suddenly older plasma tvs look good again and still my favorite for picture quality and depth.

I have seen something like this on Youtube, but if I remember well it was for a Sony.
It would be nice to have a resistor fix, then using some rubber in there.

YEP!!! if twisting helped you probably have bad tabs, welcome to the family lol! now figure out if that 10w resistor trick to a side tab works, cause i dont want to spend 3 dollars on some 10w resistors from radio shack unless it works lol!

But it would be a good idea to take your tv apart all the way down till the flimsy lcd screen is loose so you can see the tabs and apply pressure to them. If you can get pressure on 1 to consistently fix it, then id just use some foam, put it back together and sell it cheap.

I have cleaned all the connections at the T-con board and it got a little bit better, but what made the difference is when I have grabbed the whole TV's frame and twisted it a bit. I had a perfect picture, so it looks like I have a tab issue at the panel itself.
