42" lg plasma dead or is it?

    Hi
I am no electrician and i need someones help please. I have an Lg 42 inch plasma that will not power up at all, no lights nothing.
I have taken the back off and on the power supply board there are at least 2 blown caps ( split on top slightly) and two with bulging tops.
I tried to follow where the board was live with a test pen nearly half of the board is live then it goes dead where one of the capasitors is located.
Would blown caps stop the tv showing any sign of life at all when plugged in?
I am going to go out and buy some replacements but do you guys think this is all it could be?
    cheers
would a photo be better to look at to show the dead caps

Yes they would stop it powering up.
Please post high quality photos, no larger than 2000x2000px attached to the forum.
Don't buy capacitors from the shops, they will more than likely not be of the correct specification.

Re: 42" lg plasma dead or is it?

Please bare with me while i explain the picture.
The area outlined in blue has power showing with a test pen ,
there is then a damaged cap just below where i have lined in red, there is now power any where else on the board. there is also 3 other caps that are perished again lined in red.
Would these stop the tv showing any signs of life , no lights sound, nothing.

I have spoke to maplins and told them the value of the 3 caps on the left 10v 3300uf they said they have 35v 2200uf and these would do!!!
Please help me, would these caps stop all power to the tv
and will the caps they suggest do
        many thanks

I think you'll have to replace any obviously blown caps, and maybe if there are others of a similar capacitance and brand, replace them too, as they're likely to go the same way.

I've always been told that you should use the same capacitance (unless it's been shown that the original design was lacking), but can go up in voltage, when replacing faulty caps. An expert will probably be along to verify or correct me.

I agree with tmcw. You'll need to replace at least the bulging ones...and it wouldn't hurt to spend an extra $5 to replace them all in that series. When I replace caps I always buy same capacitance (essential) but up the voltage by one level. Example - remove a 3300uF 10v and replace with 3300uF 16v. You definitely do not want to replace with a shop cap unless its rated up to 105C and has identical capacitance.

As far as replacing you'll find an infinite number of tutorials on the net. I always purchase my caps from DigiKey (www.digikey.com) and have found the Panasonic FM series radial lead aluminum electrolytic caps to be the best value. Ships next day from order and arrives in 2 business days with USPS mail.

Let us know how your repair goes.

It is probably best to replace the capacitors with ones of the same capacitance. Voltage tolerance is pretty tight on some of these low voltage lines and replacing with caps that have a different rating might not work. Also you will need low esr caps. Panasonic FR/FM/FC caps would be suitable replacements. General purpose caps won't work very long if at all.

was i right in thinking that once these are replaced i should have power all across the board?
Im in the uk does anyone know where i can buy these caps from i would like to do the job asap ..........anyone open on a sunday?

Forgot to ask.......... where i drew the line around my board in the image, would that be normal for the power to end there if the caps had blown as illustrated, (just for piece if mind)
many thanks again for all your replies

Tutorial time here. This power supply is a fairly complex supply, with one standby (always on) power supply and three main supplies that power up in a specific sequence within a limited time interval. In addition, there is a PFC front end to contend with.

Notice there are four transformers arranged in a (more or less) straight line. The small one toward the bottom of the picture is for the standby supply. The caps you have tagged would affect both the standby supply and the low voltage main supplies. It is unrealistic to believe the TV would work properly until they were replaced - indeed, it is unlikely it would even try to turn on.

As for Maplin - they won't sell you quality 105˚C low ESR capacitors. The last ones I got were Jamicon 85˚C.
Buy from RS Components UK site and be patient. They have the cheapest shipping.

I will order the caps and once installed i will report back with what happens once installed.
Once again thank you very much for your time and effort .

i dont know what the difference is.

Need a part number for the first one, the second is Panasonic FC.
FC is fine as long as it fits.

Check the dimensions of new vs old.
That cap is a Panasonic FM - also suitable if it will physically fit.

I would like to thank you all for your help and the time taken to answer my posts.

I bought the new caps and my plasma is now working.
To say i had the tv given not working (they were throwing it out) it has only cost me £2.96 to repair and the picture is fantastic.

After i found this forum and then repaired my own Tv i thought about my mothers tv that packed up. She let the repair man keep it as he said it would cost the earth to repair, now i think maybe not.

Anyway once again thanks and i know where to come when i drop on anther tv.
                                  Regards

                                    Way to go!!! Congratulations.

One of the grim realities of the repair business is that the shop must make enough money to pay the employees, the rent, the utilities, and all the other expenses. This means that it will cost a MINIMUM of $100 for a repair as simple as opening up a flat panel TV and replacing a capacitor. What is worse, if the capacitor didn't fix it, they could easily spend several hours identifying the actual failure and repairing it. As a result, often a $150 power supply is installed rather than a $2.00 capacitor.

Just keep in mind there are alot of other failures that can keep a set from powering up or working peoperly. You are one of the lucky ones heh. My first repair was also bad caps. If your looking for sets to fix and resell, look for ones that do not power on or power on and off, etc.. thats usually signs of bad caps or cold solder joints, both of which are easy to fix.
