What a gutless POS! 450W? For how many picoseconds?! 200W might have been pushing one's luck! And judging by the toasty wires on those O/P inductors, some one did try to get significant current from that thing (I think that inductor wire that is lifted from the PCB, if it wasn't desoldered for troubleshooting, may have gotten hot enough to desolder itself). The O/P inductors' cores probably were hot for a long time and their magnetic properties have probably changed significantly. I would suggest either stripping off the wire from the things for recycling or simply trashing those inductors along with the rest of that alleged power supply! Definitely Keerda. At least they used the ST rectifier on the 12V. But there isn't much good to say about that power supply... At least it has half an input filter?

On the upside, quite a lot of space between primary and secondary, lots of space between high voltage traces, room for additional filtering on primary side, big heatsinks, no two diodes treatment for 12v....
Shame the main transformer is so weak.

Partially seized fan. The caps didn't have time to cook fortunately. 5vsb was fine, so i replaced the output inductor and it fired right up. Went back in the computer, coz well, owner was cheap.
Powered a 1.6GHz Celeron 420, 1GB RAM, Geforce 7200 and a single hard drive, so not much load on it. But it was still a pathetic PSU. 12A fast recovery on 12v, linear regulator with MOSFET for 3.3v (hey, at least it supplies clean power), and the diode on the 5v had its part number scraped off. Most likely 30A judging by its size. Seen worse, but still pathetic... The diode on the 5vsb is a joke tho, that looks like a 2 amp job at most. What else is new? At least you got to fix it and save the computer. As you know, some people are content to run their stuff on raw AC, as supplied by a Deer!

I imagine that "Zhila" cap (the 4.7uF 50V one) next to that resistor and 13007 isn't long for this world, assuming you didn't replace it.
That is indeed a horrible PSU, but the system it was in is probably <100W at all times, so I bet even ripple is in spec. Nice save though
Did you re-oil that fan or put a different one in there?

I was gonna say, There's more to it than just the fan. Take the Delta GPS-300AP I posted here on page 7 for example. The fan on that one was completely stuck, the PCB was badly darkened and just about every single cap was vented. However, the toroid coils are still fine. It's in my parents PC now with the original main toroid coil.Those output inductors are rather stressed in these cheep POSes, more so than even in "StupidPowers." Linkworlds were like this- good sized transformer, but the too-small output inductor would "smell" below rated output. The 12V windings were too small upon examination. Too much load on +12 for too long would easily result in shorted turns. Those should be 30A 45V rectifiers. But I imagine it's probably the same deal as with RAM modules from "lesser" known manufacturers... i.e. these particular rectifiers were likely bought on the black market or under the counter from some manufacturer who had a bunch of parts that didn't quite meet specification (i.e. refused parts).Originally posted by kaboom

Back in 2020 i bought a (2nd hand) compact ATX psu to replace my current one. My PC case only fits very short ATX power supplies so i didn't really have the choice of buying a decent 80Plus unit. The current unit is a modded YoungYear unit that i made a thread about a while ago:

The "new" unit is a KDM-M6480 480W psu, the 480W number is a typical KDM bullshit claim of course, but the 24A rating on the 12V rail seemed reasonable and the "Active PFC" claim gave me a bit of hope that this was going to be decent-ish.... -

I tried powering it up. It's a KILLER - not fried, but sure will fry things! I got 21V out of it unloaded according to my DMM!
I tried 21W load (car lamp) - got 16V, which is really pushing that lamp.
Then I tried a 50W load (car headlight) - got 13.2V. Not too bad but this is with the heavy load...except the circuit breaker kept tripping.
So I had to take a peek:

I'm learning electronics(already have some basics) by fixing a FH52M LA-J891P rev1B. It come from an acer nitro 5. The charger was defaulting upon pluging. The 19V rail resistance is 0ohm (I believe that caps screw my measurement). When i inject 5A, I get a rail tension of 1.3V, and 0.8V vcccore.
Except the cpu, I cant feel anything getting warmer.
I believe that it is normal, because the cpu is "eating" half the power I'm imputing.
I dont know if the cpu is fried, because I did not remove the big capacitor on vcccore.

I was given this tv today. It was purchased just last month and only used for 3 weeks until recently when water leaked down the back and behind the cover. I removed the boards and WHOA 😲 did this thing get fried. Unfortunately the water got directly onto the backlights portion of the PSU. The board appears to be completely unrepairable, but I'm not certain about the backlights. I managed to get the probes of my tester into the slits of the plug and I DO get readings from both strings. I'm getting 26v from both. The PSU says LED Output is 167.4v however. Would this indicate that the backlights... -
While installing new SSD's in my new to me Dell 5520 laptop, I dropped a screw which sparked and fried a capacitor. Yes, I know I should have disconnecte the battery first Doh!😡. The laptop runs fine, but I want to replace the capacitor asap. I ordered and received the replacement (10uF, 25V 0603). Since I also managed to burn up one of the pads it was soldered to, my main question is whether it is okay to solder this capacitor on top of another capacitor (same size, same function in circuit). Specifically, PC4428 is bad and no way to easily solder to the board. I would like to solder it piggy...
