Vizio M50-D1 power supply dual voltage?

    Hello!
New guy here, my name is George and I am currently stationed overseas in Germany. I have a Vizio TV (M50-D1) and I saw that on the back it is only rated for 120v but I was told by a few people here that sometimes they do that to cut costs even though it is capable of dual voltage.

I tried contacting Vizio, they told me to contact vizparts, and they never replied. I contacted shopjimmy and they pointed me to you guys. Any education on how to know for future reference would be greatly appreciated!

    This is the board

look at the caps, top left corner.
    What are they rated for?

Its possible that its 120VAC Only because they saved on the X and Y-Caps and used only 250VAC rated ones or even lower.

    For 230VAC you'd want 400VAC ones usually.

What would I be looking for on them? I am not sure if I know which ones you are talking about, could you circle them in red? Thanks for the help

Re: Vizio M50-D1 power supply dual voltage?

What does it say on the model plate? it might tell you the input voltage, something like 95~250 vac input
It's a good chance that it is a universal input power supply, but it would usually list that fact on the board near the a/c input.
But I just checked the owners manual and it list's Voltage Range: 120v@60Hz

Check the voltage rating on the blue caps C9901, C9902, I checked the mov (RV9901) and it will be ok.

          MOV RV9901 (TVR14621) is rated at 620V.
The spec of the TV as shown at the website, the AC input is 120V AC.

Yeah, the back of the TV says 120. What you are saying here is that the components are rated for more?
I apologize for my ignorance, learning a lot from this process.

once it runs, is it a universal tuner??
how will you give it a signal?
              germany uses DVB-T.
not that it matters, other than some police/scifi stuff on RTL-2 and Pro7 there is nothing worth watching.
and you dont need to be brainwashed by AFN on base!

I mostly just want to watch AFN commercials because you know...they are the best

It is a smart TV and I have a VPN to get hulu and Netflix is international so I can watch shows and stuff.

BTW, this community is awesome, really happy I came upon it, I have recently been trying to become more educated with electronics and so far the people here are super cool.

You are better off getting the step down auto transformer, according to the Vizio spec, it only uses 65W of power.
Without having the schematic of that power supply board to see how some of the Incoming AC Voltage sensing are being used, it will be taking a chance on damaging the TV, the main fuse should also be about 1/2 of what is right now too for 230V operation.

I agree with budm, get a stepdown transformer, since more and more electronic devices are universal input range, the transfomers may be easy to obtain used or cheaper

i'm actually surprised the u.s. bases arent all wired for 110v anyway.
although you wouldnt want tricky dick cheney's company doing the wiring after the 2 showerblock "incidents" in iraq!!

This board has APFC with 450V primary capacitors so most probably its boosting the voltage to 380V. Very strange its not labeled as universal input.

I have read online that TV producers will just use the same power supplies for all of their TV's but they don't do the proper testing and get the approvals from the different countries because it saves money. Basically its able to be used in the EU but since they aren't going to sell it there and they wont market it there, they just don't go through the trouble of getting the stamp.

I would think that since you're stationed at a military base, then step down transformers would be made available to you at a low price. I'm sure there are plenty of personnel there from the States that brought with them devices that only run off of 120vac.

Easy test, plug into 230V and see if it will smoke, or use Variac and step up transformer and the slowly increasing the Voltage from 120V and see what happen. I go with step down auto transformer.

Re: Vizio M50-D1 power supply dual voltage?

I can't fathom a way in which it would not be universal input.
Because of the rating of the electrolytic capacitors at 450v you can be 100% sure it uses APFC boosting.
Because those capacitors are allot more expensive vs what would be required if they did not boost, then it would only be necessary with 200v rated parts at a fraction of the price.
The board is cheap anyway so fire it up at 230v and see what happens, but without having the LCD connected to it.
The board is cheaper than a autotransformer on shopjimmy anyway

                                          by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                                          Assuming...

                                          LM358 LM358S-13 Datasheet
                                          by Document Archive
The LM358 LM358S-13 consists of two independent, high gain, internally frequency compensated operational amplifiers which were designed specifically to operate from a single power supply over a wide range of voltages. Operation from split power supplies is also possible and the low power supply current drain is independent of the magnitude of the power supply voltage.

Application areas include transducer amplifiers, dc gain blocks and all the conventional op amp circuits which now can be more easily implemented in single power supply systems. For example, the LM358 series can be directly...

good day hoping someone can lend a hand, im repairing smart tv 50 inch, status when turning on back light is dim but you can see the tv logo then slowly fading out to black, i check the supply to tcon, i only read 5+v, must be 12v, i removed lvds cable and check voltage to mainboard turned on its also 5v, then i remove the cable mainboard to power supply, i read 12v in power supply, thinking that the problem is in the mainboard, coz theres 12v in power supply, i also check while turning on checking volts in main board 12v dropping to 5v, im just new repairing in TV, hope someone see my post t...

I have been pondering this question for a while but now I have see if this doable but I need to answer this question once and for all

I would like to know how to safely do this undertaking my first thought is to solder wires to the main filtering capacitors and see
what voltage I am getting and seeing if I can build a battery pack with voltage or not and if

I can find a BMS balancing protection board at this voltage level and weather or not do I have use more than one BMS balancing protection board...
