He wasn't being rude about it, or trying to start anything. Failing caps doesn't mean the power supply was poorly designed. Cheap caps will fail in almost every scenario. The thing that takes the brunt when capacitors fail in the power supply is the attached hardware, not so much the power supply itself.Comment

If other parts in the supply were stressed and end up blowing later, so what? Replace them too, that's what this forum and repair is about... even if it's not economically sensible, chances are you'll learn something from it or remind yourself of something you forgot. Not everyone has years of experience and repairing even a junk PSU is likely still an educationally worthwhile thing for many people.
I agree though that it's maybe not worth the hassle or cost if the PSU is really cheap, but if you can't afford a better one it might make sense to spend a little time to improve a cheap one and use it as long as you are aware of its limitations.
It depends how cheap you're talking of course. Some really are awful, and I wouldn't bother with them either (even brand new), but some budget PSUs aren't too bad, they use tried-and-true designs and seem to be fairly reliable provided they aren't overloaded and the capacitors aren't junk."Tantalum for the brave, Solid Aluminium for the wise, Wet Electrolytic for the adventurous"

Mister, if you can't even tell half decent power supply (and this one is somewhat better than that), than it is good I never got anything from your "electronics" and I hope I never will.
As Dr. House says, you have to deserve to be arrogant. So far you showed nothing but calling every PSU in every thread you posted in a PoS. So I suggest slowing down with that

My point exactly. This is an excellent quality PSU, which was let down solely by the caps - not a piece of junk from the ground up. I DON'T ever recap cheap junk PSUs. I woudn't count Topower that much to the 'quality manufacturers'. They are somewhat OKish, sometimes, but not really that great....
Even compared to others from that time (Enhance, Delta and so on)...
Well, the Dark Power P6 (non pro) I tested on the chroma was somewhat OK but had JenPo caps...
The P4 and P5 were worse as they used those Fthings...Comment

Ive only tested it on a PSU tester so far and it seems to be ok. its got a bit of coil whine / buzz in standbye mode but I don't know if that's how its always been.
I'm gonna huck it up to an old sli GTX 470 system which is very power hungry and let it run 6-12 on loads maybe running heaven or something.

New capacitors perhaps need a little glue to hold them up to the plate and do not vibrate.
The point is that any glue is not suitable for components, it may affect chemically to the plate.
I planned to use hot glue but only if it is suitable for this use.
If someone could tell me if I can use this glue, I would appreciate it.

I don't think hot glue is suitable, I've used some RTV silicone on this to separate capacitors from coils as that's how it was before.Comment

i use UHU or Bostik all-purpose adhesive on pcb's

I do have several old pc motherboards which i recapped 10 year ago and some of those caps are bulged now.
I would like to upgrade them using solid capacitors. I do use them for testing and helping some alternative operating systems.
I would like to ask if such an upgrade can be done, what should i have in mind when replacing electrolytic by solid caps and if such thing exist, if there are caps list for old motherboards. I would have to figure out what caps needs each motherboard and then prepare a list to try to ask for them on some electronics stores. -
My 3.5 years old monitor (BenQ SW2700pt) started to black out for 1-2 sec every minute or so, it was doing this even with PC disconnected from it. I searched online and read that it's probably aging capacitors and there's a workaround to lower the brightness.
I lowered it from 100 to 65% and it indeed helped, but after a couple of months the issue returned... I continued to lower the brightness, but it helped only for a couple of hours at most, then I needed to lower it further... Turning the monitor off and waiting for it to cool down also helped for a short time, after which it... -

Recently I got this tagan tg380-u01 PSU with bad caps on 3.3v rail (the line was 2.5v no load!). Replaced them but no go, so I've replaced all of them, apart from some smaller ones and one under the secondary heatsink. Even that didn't help so I've replaced the others. All caps are known good ones.
Powered it on and heard the breaker pop. Opened it up and saw some smaller caps shorted together. Fixed that up but still it trips breakers. Now I get 0ohms from 5v to GND. Secondary heatsink removed and still a short, even with the PWM IC board removed. All diodes on that... -

I'm recapping an old Creative Labs / Cambridge speaker system / subwoofer. At 4:33 in this video, the person looking at what he says are the speaker caps in the system says they are 470 uF, and that he'd use much larger caps if he was building it.

I'm wondering if I should use something larger for the recap job, and what using larger caps will do for it.
Would 680uF be good value to try in place of the 470uF originals?
