Start up caps are also part of the cap kit that should be replace at the same time.

Oh, it gets hot alright... The fan speed is also stupidly low. These PCs look like they were designed for a certain size and noise level, with total disregard for _anything_ else. If I keep it I might mod the PSU fan to run at full speed.

I found the clue here: http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/smpsfaq.htm#smpsuc3842d Problem is, it's buried down the bottom of the page - they should have included it as part of the 'power cycling troubleshooting' section at the top!

I didn't think of it before because the symptoms were rather odd.

It *did* start when connected to the PC, then it would run for a bit, then it would start power cycling.

With a dead startup cap I expected it would never start at all, and if it was some big problem I would expect it to power cycle straight away.

That's why I thought (maybe badly) it might be something in the monitoring circuitry.

Put that cap on ESR meter while heating up with hair dryer to see if the ESR will drop if the cap is not too far gone, I use hair dryer alot to locate bad caps problem.

Glad you like it. I would have liked to make a better one but my camera is too old (limits to 30 seconds), plus I think a thermocouple could have been useful.

One thing I can tell you is that HP switching power supply can not be run very long with out a motherboard because the power supply will lock up in this mode of operation

Dell E6400 PT434 type Battery Charging Stuck at 1%. Battery Pinouts?
                      by Bowline
My question pertains to understanding the control circuity inside a Dell PT434 type battery used in Dell E6400, E6410 and other Dell notebooks?

Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the inside of a Dell PT434 battery and/or a description of how the control lines work to control this battery?

My reason for asking is I have a battery which I cannot get to charge beyond 1% in a Dell E6410 or E6400.
The LED bar graph charge indicator on the battery shows one LED lighted when the info button is pressed.
I have tried multiple different Dell power adapters. My Dell...

                      by master3112
I would like to share my experience about charging issues with Dell power supplies with the tech community. I am working on a Dell Inspiron 5590, Mainboard 18778-1 with charging problems. The device can be switched on and works so far, only the message appears at startup:

Alert! The AC power adapter wattage and Type cannot be determined. The battery may not change. The System will adjust the performace to match the power available.

The power supply unit is not recognized in the Bios and the charging process is set to "idle". I use original Dell battery, type...

                      Hello all,

this is my first post, so if I make mistakes please do not hesitate to point them out, thank you in advance.

I got a Dell Latitude 5420 (Service Tag: 7RFM6D3, Motherboard: GDF40 LA-491P Rev.: 2.0 (A01)) which does not start and I want to repair it. These are the symptoms:

If the laptop is only connected to the AC adapter (battery removed):

When I press the power button, the keyboard backlight and the display backlight are turning on. Caps key light is lightning, but key does not respond to pressing it.

                      The power/battery...

Dell XPS One 2720 AIO Liteon PS-3261-9DA not starting up immediately
                      by cheeky2
I suspect the issue is with the power supply Liteon PS-3261-9DA as apparently they are notorious for issues with them. Has anyone else had similar issues where the PC tries to boot up a few times before finally booting up. Now I have opened up the PSU which shows no signs of any capacitors failing. I did remove one capacitor that looked to have an issue however with my peak meter it showed it was within the limits with good very low esr values which was somewhat disappointing!
I am going to put a Meter leads across the outputs to see how stable they are when it occurs to see what they are...

                      Looking for Dell Latitude 5520 / 5530 / 5540 RJ45 network connector replacement
                      by diamon
I have a Dell Latitude 5530 with a damaged RJ45 network connector. See the attached pictures.

Have already searched on Farnell / Aliexpress / Ebay and had contact with several suppliers on Aliexpress and Ebay, but they cannot deliver this connector.
Is there someone inside the EU, who has these connector(s) or perhaps defective motherboard(s) for these laptop models I have mentioned in the topic title.
