Different PSUs and Different Motherboard Test Results

Received an old nonworking PC because the owner did not turn off the PC when tried to connect a new HDD and blew the PSU.

Separately tested the Memory, HDD, Floppy and CD drives on a "Good PC" so decided to use the PSU from the "Good PC" and while did not get any "error beeps" the screen was black so thought the Motherboard Video section had been damaged.

Since I am new to testing Motherboards, did not want to inadvertantly destroy any "Good PSUs" so decided to post "Recommend a PSU for Benchtesting Motherboards" https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5688

PCBONEZ recommended using a Server PSU so tried a working AOpen FSP300-60BT. When connected it to the above Motherboard using the same minimal Memory, Floppy and CD drive hardware the on board Video worked!

Would like to learn from this experience so appreciate any comments why the onboard Video did not work with the first "Good PSU" but did with the "Server PSU"?

Also if anyone would like me to post photos of either the original or first "Good PSU" Please let me know.

Re: Different PSUs and Different Motherboard Test Results

Forgot to mention the original blown PSU was an Ilssan 120W and the first Good PSU was an AcBel 100W. The AcBel was not damaged and when reconnected to it PC everything worked.

Discussion of the AOpen Server PSU is "AOpen FSP300-60BT PSU for Benchtesting Motherboards?" https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15093

Am wondering if anyone else has han an experience like this?

I think the 100W simply wasn't high enough capacity.

You also need to pay attention to the -5v rail.
It is now obsolete and gone on newer equipment [including PSUs] but some old equipment still needs it to work.
-5v was for the ISA BUS.
Lack of an ISA -slot- doesn't always mean there is no ISA BUS on a motherboard because sometimes they include the BUS and mount chips [sound, LAN, etc..] directly on it as on-board devices.

Asus ROG Strix Scar G533qm with a G733qm Motherboard, can I modify the Bios to accept G533 Bios
        by glovecaps
        Hello,

I have a Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 (G533QM) that had a dead motherboard (Graphics card dead) and after trying to fix the motherboard with no success, I bit the bullet on a sale for a new motherboard. I ordered a motherboard for the 15 inch model which is the one that I have, and when the motherboard arrived it wasn't for a little while that I saw it was from the 17 inch model.

My question is, can I update the Bios on this G733 motherboard to a G533 Bios.

The reason for wanting to do this is that the keyboard isn't working as it should, and I think this...

Legion Y540 17irh motherboard issue ( need help to know how to diagnose my motherboard)
        by Docus
        Hi everyone 😀,

I'm here today to ask for help with repairing the motherboard of a Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH.

To give you some context, I'm passionate about computer repair so much so that I've invested in a lot of tools and started practicing on dead and old hardware. I've been learning how to solder and desolder components, mostly focusing on phone repairs.

Recently, I bought a broken Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH for just €150, and there are two main reasons why I made this purchase:
        1. I already own the exact same model, but its plastic chassis is badly damaged.

        ASUS P5GC-MX motherboard recap
        by momaka
Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

        Motherboard diagnostic beginner advice

To save you some time: the most important bits are in bold.
Some further examples/explanations or to the side & in grey - you can probs skip them if it's TLDR for you. Sorry, I've got ADHD & tend to over-explain stuff - just like I'm doing right now 😅 Briefness is for poets not me 🙈

Please help!! 🎶I'm just a girl in a world that wants to scam me out of lots of money for any tech stuff/repairs 🎵 Seriously tho, I'm poor&I can't afford to get laptop diagnosis, especially if it ends up needing a new motherboard. Where I live, all the tech shops are run by very...
