Asus A6J laptop: No bootable device insert boot disc ...

    Hi there,

my laptop ASUS A6J shows an interesting problem.

After any fresh OS installation (i.e. Windows 8, Vista or Linux), it boots immediately without any problem.
But if the laptop remains powered off for a tens of minutes, then it does not boot and shows the error:

No bootable device. Please insert boot disc and press any key to continue...

It sounds strange because the BIOS always reads the hard disk correctly.
The SMART functionality also does not show any issue, as well as various HDD tools used for diagnosis (i.e. Hiren's CD, Windows check).

I have also tried to replace the hard disk, but the problem persists.

Thus I thought to a battery CMOS problem (since it is older than 10y), I replaced the CR2032 but the issue
remains exactly the same: cold boot does not work, warm boot is fine (i.e. by booting from a CD/DVD).

Now the laptop is disassembled on my lab.

I would check defective caps or whatelse you suggest. The question is that most of the components are SMD...
It looks a bit difficult for a noob as I am to identify defective parts, capacitors included.

    Thank you for any suggestion.
    Thanks for your help

It could be a symptom of a dying CR2032 battery. Especially with a 3 year old and later board.

As I wrote, I replaced the CR2032 battery with a new one but has not changed practically nothing...

First of all, google for a schematic of ASUS A6J. find your keyb. controller ic and check for cold.

Thank you Francisco, that's what I was looking for.

The revision is for A6Jc, while the exact laptop model is A6JA-Q002H, I don't know if there are huge differences between models c and a.

Can I ask where I can look for such schematic diagrams? Your answer, even in PM, would be greatly appreciated

Have you made sure the 'new' battery is not bad? A lot of times you will get batteries (especially small watch-type ones) from the stores that are a few years old, and they are sometimes dead by then!

(My grandparents love cheapo-batteries, so they come to me very often wanting something to be repaired, when it's just a dead 'new' battery :P)

Yes, the battery is good and new.
After a lot of intensive MemTest86+ without any evidence of failure, the warm reboot went fine. Thus I have replaced the SoDimm module and the hard disk, and a new OS has been installed again. The first boot went fine, but unfortunately the cold boot has exactly the same issue...
Today I would prepare the main board for a reflow attempt ...

I have no other schematic for that model, and I found it in a webpage, that is not working now.

Hi all, I've spent the past week digging through the forums and guides to try correct my foolish mistake of changing hidden settings while tinkering around, and to be honest my heads overloaded so I'm hoping you'll be able to help.

I used a tool called 'Smokeless-UMAF' to access usually hidden settings in the bios. I tweaked one or two 'safe' things but made the mistake of tweaking a lot of settings under 'USB/Thunderbolt Configurations' when I didn't know what they did. For...

--> [F2] won't let me enter the BIOS. To enter the BIOS, I had to create a shortcut and then type C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /r /fw /t 1 in the destination. This forced it to restart and enter the BIOS.
Once inside, I went to the BOOT menu, but, surprise, it wasn't there. I got the following message:

Asus laptop won't boot (no power) - possible bad caps?
                      by jrodefeld
I would like to see if anyone could help me salvage a very expensive laptop that is no longer working.

                      The model:
                      Asus Zenbook Pro Duo UX582L

I have used this laptop lightly since I purchased it new in 2022. I have always taken precautions to take care of it the best I could, and have never done anything that would risk causing damage to it or shorten it's life.

However, around six months ago, the laptop stopped working on battery power. It continued to work fine when plugged in, but as soon as power was disconnected,...

It came in because it was in a Windows 11 auto repair/BSoD loop. There were no dump files present on the drive which was odd. I attempted to boot into a Windows bootable USB and after selecting the USB, I would get a Windows logo and progress circle, then the system would halt and I get a BSoD. Each time the stop code is different. I have tried bootable...

I get this Asus X450LC REV 2.2 can't boot from SATA, ODD or USB flash drive.

Power on normally. Boot to bios ok.
But I can't normal boot from HDD (windows 7) just freeze on the animation. I can't boot from pre-installed SSD windows 10, bsod: driver pnp watchdog. I can't boot USB flash drive Hiren boot CD or linux mint.
