    Warning-hp dv9000,dv9200,dv9500 "new" motherboard

Probably not many people still interested in these but I wanted to share a recent bad experience.

Beware of EBAY advertised "Sealed HP New" "2nd Generation Video Chip" "Improved" motherboards.

I paid over $200 + international freight for a DV9000 series INTEL MB with the NVIDIA GO7600 chip and 512M of video ram.

This was advertised as A brand-new, unused, sealed HP new, 2nd generation improved over original realease board.

What I received was a 2006 built board including the NVIDIA video chip also 2006 model in a heat sealed anti-static bag.

Anyone who knows this model would also know 2006 would be the very beginning of the production run for this model laptop. It was a 2006 release model.

On top of this there was evidence of previous screwdriver impressions on the cpu locking screw and the power button LED intermittently worked.

I queried the seller who assured me the board would not be an issue. They also had a high satisfaction rating, so I took their word.

By the time I got around to installing this I estimate I got about 2.5- 3 months recreational use out of this and then the Video chip failed.

I got an apology from this seller but no support.

They are based in Connecticut, United States of America.

This is what happens when the alarm bells ring but you still put your faith and trust in people.

You should have gotten a 8600. Anyway, hit it with the hot air gun and you'll get another 3 months out of it, more if you do a little case mod. I cut a hole underneath the GPU heatsink on my dv9000 and installed a small fan with thermal control. Working great since.

If you don't leave feedback on eBay, you have about 3 months to file a dispute.
Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

I've tried the oven trick and had the chip bubbling away but could only get a couple of weeks out of it. I have not been able to work out what exactly is a normal temp for the chip to run at but the best I could get was 55C usually 60-65C.

I have seen 2009 production GO7600 chips which supposedly have different substrate material.

I disputed it with the seller but he assured it would be ok but it just happens sometimes I guess. it's nice to trust people once in a while but it's hurts being let down.

Already left positive feedback and more then 3 months now. i should have installed it straight away and used it heavily because it would have failed within the 60 day wty he gave.

Foolish of me, the odds were stacked against resurrecting this laptop.

If you keep it under 60 it'll work good. Also try not to drop the laptop, once reflowed the BGA is sensitive to physical shocks as well.

How does it behave when it dies? Artifacts or just no video at all? If you've done it in the oven and it artifacts but otherwise boots up and loads windows, no BSOD and normal resolution, not 640x480, then it's the video RAM not the GPU.

I don't know the 7600, but on the 8000 series the RAM chips are on both sides of the mobo, and it's usually the ones on the top, that go under the keyboard and have no heatsinking of any kind, that fail. You're going to need a heat gun to do those. I got creative and cut out a piece of aluminum from an old notebook HDD caddy, and applied thermal grease to it so that the RAM chips on top dissipate some heat thru the top cover and keyboard. Seems to be working fine since (2 months). Well, the GPU failed in the meantime, but that's another story... And that's quite a hack i did to its case, but it's doing a great job. https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...t=18907&page=3

Also if you haven't used flux, that would explain why it failed again so quickly.

let me ask something, how do you get flux under the chip? that area is very very tiny to get flux into

also, your problem was you got an nvidia motherboard for a dv6/7/9 series. Those are so inherently flawed cause of this same issue. You should of looked for a dv board with an ati chip

Liquid flux using a syringe. Just a few drops is all you need. HP didn't make any dvxxxx series with ATI. This was only on the more recent dvx series and even these are only marginally better.

I remember at our old shop people bringing in those (usually 6000) and the boss getting this local electronics guy to replace the motherboard inside them with one that had an intel or ati chipset (that guy had TONS of boards for the dv series)

The DVx7xx series were Intel GMA (complete with Intel CPU and northbridge) however a few connections were different. For example, the ribbon cable for the wireless switch was different and the right most USB port has a different cable end. Also the fan/heatsink is different for obvious reasons. Given this, its still possible however you need to also replace the bottom housing and get a matching CPU/GPU heatsink and fan.

You do bring up an excellent point though since the Intel series of these were rock solid. This is common practice at my shop especially for the Dell D6x0 nVidia models that come in with GPU problems. I replace them with Intel discrete boards and the customer is much happier.

Slight decrease in graphics performance is a small price to pay for a cooler, more reliable system!

Mm, i have (or more accurately - had - as i got ripped off with a board with just 128MB VRAM) a dv9750ed, and it had the 8400M on it.

Uh, slight is a gross understatement. I couldn't use an intel integrated if i tried.

There were a few minor revisions that had nvidia GPU's. Same thing with the DVx5xx series. Most of those were nVidia but a few had Intel GMA. I agree with the graphics performance in games. I remember my son trying to run Minecraft on my E4300 with Intel GMA and Core2 with 8GB RAM. I told him it would play it just fine. Boy was I wrong! Most people (at least my customers) only play farmville so its all good

^ lol, Man VS Sealed Bag.

Emerald is still selling the questionable boards, I wonder if those who are duped by them aren't making formal fraud complaints to ebay and if they are, who needs to be contacted that ebay is ignoring those.

People need to understand that HP does not send out mainboards for end users to swap, there is no source for a "new" board except to buy from HP which in small volume is no cheaper than buying from them yourself as the former option would mean both the middleman seller and ebay markup too.

I already have and they assure me that they are investigating although I don't believe it. There's definitely a pattern developing with his feedback. I feel really stupid because I new it was not right when I got it but he's a smooth operator.

I've also made the point to Ebay about the supply and availabilty of these boards in fact according to HP online they're no longer available.

                                  It's simply all

The ultimate insult is the fact he charges about $100 more than anyone else for this rubbish.

My main reason for posting is to get it out there that 'it's fake but just yesterday he managed to sell another DV9000 board and another victim i guess.

If anything becomes of Ebay I'll be sure to post it.

                                  Here's what has been said.

                                  Hi Gerard,

With this, please keep your communication line open for any update from
your seller. I'm looking forward that this matter will be resolved soon.

                                  Thanks for choosing eBay.

You need to remove this guys listings as he is luring people with his

I have already informed emeraldlaptops of the not as described item upon

the goods were not as described.

Your PayPal protetion is too restrictive for these situations where you
give the seller the benefit of the doubt and the item does in deed turn
out to be defective outside the 45day dispute period. This guy is
selling this defctive boards close to $100 more than anyone else
correctly advertising there's as secondhand or refurbished.
I'm $240 down the toilet on this guy, How about a little PAYPAL
protetion and getting some of my money back/ i've suggested $100 to him
                                  but communications have ceased.

You are providing this seller with a medium to fraudulently obtain money

                                  Module Reported: MyWorld.ReportAbuse
Reason for report: Fraudulently listing HP DV series motherboards as
"NEW, SECOND GENERATION, IMPROVED VIDEO CHIP" I purchased one of these
and there is no way it was new or 2nd gen beacause the board and every
component including the NVIDIA GO 7600 video chip was 2006 production.
2006 was the very first year these were manufactured. There was also a
screwdriver impression on the CPU mount screw.

Given the class action taken against HP and NVIDIA which has determined
these to be defective from the beginning and ordering compensation, this
seller is therefor selling known defective items.

I contacted this seller immediately but was assured this board would be
ok but "it should have been " one of the newer boards. He's a conman.

This board has predictably failed and just after 3 months of light use
with NVIDIA video chip failure just as pretty muc every other DV series
                                  laptop with this chip.
