True to a degree and I must admit, the outside image is top notch, excellent, it certainly fooled me when I first came here...what do I mean by that: as I previously ranted in other posts of mine, which I can't help doing every now and then to let off steam, the work environment is far from ideal - with something this big and fancy, you'd expect only top quality tools and conditions, but no - far from it. Quite the opposite - MUCH worse than my former shop which would probably be less than a fraction of this one, if that and that was a small apartment ! That's the way it goes I'm afraid.

    I digress....

Re: PS4 loses date/time settings every time

Another thing I just remembered is that Mr. G said at one point that the problem might be the "clock" signal...now I'm a bit skeptical about that, I mean, not to contradict someone who's been in the electronics business some 20 years more than me, but just because it's got the name "clock" in it, doesn't mean it generates the TIME What he's referring to is obviously the clock circuit with the crystal and all that, but my theory is that if this were faulty in any way, we wouldn't have a PS4 that turns on with picture on screen, connects to wi-fi and plays sound and all that...

well, if you want to shut him up, check the 32KHz crystal is running with a frequency counter or good meter.

I haven't seen any evidence that a "drifted off crystal" doesn't generate any time. As long as the crystal is working everything else should too. If the crystal is not "quite on the spot" it will result in time going faster or slower. Usually as the crystals age they drift down in frequency. This can be compensated by adding a little more capacitance at the crystal.
I am siding with stj on the battery voltage not getting there where it should be.

most faults i'v seen with crystals are either total failure, or massive shifts - like moving the decimal point.

besides, it's more to shut up the guy who mentioned the "clock" signal than anything.

Just my thought: a "clock" in this case does not refer to time ONLY - there's other functions that it governs which wouldn't have worked as well as they do...like the system turning on AT ALL and actually displaying stuff....all those rely on the clock signal.

not that clock - there are many.
modern systems usually have a crystal running at say 14.318MHz that runs a PLL chip that outputs lots of different clocks all syncronised to the crystal.

but it's seperate from the RTC because it's power hungry and would trash a battery.

Yeh, I couldn't find a definite fix for that also, but maybe it's somehow related to the RTC issue in some way. I can understand it throwing that error if the clock was off (like any browser refusing to connect if the clock in Windows is way off), but it doesn't work even after setting the time...

Nope - I don't have it on hand. The guy took it home, but he said he'll bring it back to me specifically for further digging. He's a colleague of mine.

while you are at it and if you have the capability, measure the current draw on the battery. It is going to be really small, so you have to have special gear for that.

Hmmm...I have an Aneng meter which is supposedly sensitive enough to measure small values like that. The battery wasn't flat when I pulled it out if that's what you were thinking. Getting it in series with the battery might be the trickiest part...

yes, the draw will be very low. A regular current meter won't cut it here.

Hello... Where do I start. I have 2 questions/scenarios that might bring this laptop back to life, so here it goes!

I have this laptop (Asus UX52VS) where I was flashing the BIOS to it and it froze during the process. I didn't have a reliable BIOS chip programmer at the time (It was a CH341A USB Programmer from Amazon where it took hours just to get the clamp on the chip and then every time I read, it gave me different results/corruption, and never would pass the verify test as no 2 reads were the same data), so I brought it to a shop. They had it for almost 2 months, but during...

                                            Hi guys,
I post my problem here because I think it could be a capacitor related issue (Asus support on this particular subject is non-existing).
So the computer is a Zephyrus-S17-GX735LXS-26T and the strange behavior is seen.
On cold start most of the time the internal screen is detected and a picture it works fine until shutdown, sleep or deep sleep.
Then the screen won't work for a long period of time.
If I wait 1 or 2 hours it work again most of the time.
When it doesn't work the batterie indicator blink 3 times white stop and the same schematic is repeated...

Elitebook 820 G3 engineering example: CMOS settings lost despite new cell
                                            by i440bx
                                            Hey there,

I got a HP Elitebook 820 G3 Engineering Sample Laptop and I want to use it. Besides the difficult things at the ES-BIOS I have a big problem by saving the main BIOS settings.

The laptop does not have a big battery because it was dead, but I already plugged in a new CMOS battery.

It takes about 5min without power and the BIOS settings are lost. Unfortunatly I dont understand why the BIOS settings are only saved with power connected and this is the reason why I registered here.

As written above, I plugged in a new CMOS cell and checked...

Hi all, I've spent the past week digging through the forums and guides to try correct my foolish mistake of changing hidden settings while tinkering around, and to be honest my heads overloaded so I'm hoping you'll be able to help.

I used a tool called 'Smokeless-UMAF' to access usually hidden settings in the bios. I tweaked one or two 'safe' things but made the mistake of tweaking a lot of settings under 'USB/Thunderbolt Configurations' when I didn't know what they did. For...

Adding a clock battery to action camera to retain date&time when changing batteries Campark X25
                                            by flat-earther
I have a cheap action camera with an annoying trait, every time I change batteries the date & time gets reset and I have to set it again.

To solve this problem I want to add a small internal battery inside it which will keep supplying power to the camera for a while while I change batteries so the date & time is retained.

I have opened the camera and I think there is enough room to add something inside to accomplish this:

The camera is powered by a 3.7V nominal single cell lithium ion battery.
So I need to connect another battery in...
