Wood's smart strip failure - power strip

    So...

This is my second wood's power strip / smartstrip that has failed

I believe it is made by CCI and I see that the new ones are a different color (I don't actually know if it's the same model/ design).

They last between 2-5 years and in this case, the controlled outlets would no longer turn on.

I thought it was a bad cap but upon disassembly, I see it is a burnt out / cracked resister (at least on this one).

I have appended pictures but will not attempt a repair as 1) power strips scare me...I've done computer power supplies but there, they are surrounded by a metal to contain the heat hopefully.

Anyways, in case someone has the same power strips and find that they are failing, this might give you an idea of where to look.

check the thermal fuse against the mov's
if it's dead then the mov's have failed.

Hmm..interesting. Wish I had one to take a look at.

I'm not sure about the thermal fuses-MOVs, though those are typical failures, I don't believe the 'smartstrip' feature depend on those (though I could be wrong). The overheated resistors are possible however as they may be sense resistors. I'm not exactly sure how the SCR fits in, usually used for latching but you want the strip to turn off... A detailed picture of the back side of the board would be interesting. And I wonder what that PT-77341 is...just a coil?

That pt-77341 looks like a current transformer (sensor) It detects current from the load device then switches on the remaining outlets. The burnt resistor may be for the dc supply for the circuit, as it has current flowing through it all the time it might have just opened up.

The 48VDC relay coil and the circuit that drives it probably uses the capacitive coupling power supply, we need GOOD CLEAR straight shot pictures of the whole bottom side of the board to trace out the circuit.

The trouble is finding out the cooked resistor's original value. The resistor should not heat up unless the relay coil is on?

It's a basic circuit, the CT turns on the SCR, which rectifies mains and is filtered to DC by tiny C3, which drives the relay coil.

The Song Chuan 801H 48VDC relay needs only 7.5mA

There must be 25 patents on Smart Strips, but I could not see which (SCR) one Woods is using.

I second this - probably a failed capacitor-coupled power supply that's burned that resistor and making the strip not function.

Well, this power strip appears to have a thermal fuse. So if something goes wrong, it should cut power off.

On that note, almost every power strip with MOVs and no fuse could be potentially unsafe (i.e. catch fire). Spark gaps are safer, but more expensive I think.

not so sure, once a spark gap arc's it can sustain the arc in the plasma field at much lower voltages.

Crest Smart Home Single Power Adaptor SHSPM1 (rebadged Tuya device) - bad cap causing failure, how to repair
                  by mrdevil
                  Hi all,

Wanted to share this as I couldn't find anything on the internet about this problem, so pulled one apart and found the problem myself. Years ago I bought approx 20 or so Crest Smart Home Single Power Adapter smart switches - small 240v Tuya-compatible (rebranded) smart switch devices with power monitoring, which Big W had on sale for half price. Paid $7.50 each for these, and they've been incredibly useful for turning things on and off remotely... and monitoring how much power each device uses.

However, after about 12 months, I had a number of these stop working...

Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 - no power
                  by PantherDave
                  Hi all!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.

                  Hi all,

TL;DR - this laptop is driving me nuts with the oddball power-related behaviors. Appreciate any insight you can provide!

I'm experiencing a power issue on an Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74. Although I've worked with electronics and computers for decades, this is my first attempt at getting into motherboard-level component troubleshooting. Any help the community can provide is greatly appreciated!

A few weeks ago I was using the laptop (on battery power) for a Zoom meeting. The battery was running very low (long meeting) but I wasn't worried about...

Mitsubishi CNC switching power supply board dead / relay board bad diode failure
                  by sam_sam_sam
I was working on this CNC machine today found no keyboard functioning no control relay powering on
The screen powered on and was giving an operation error but the manual was not very clear about what the error exactly was but with a little bit of troubleshooting and finding out that the control relays not powering on and no keyboard functions we narrowed down to this one switching power supply which of course does not have any indicator LED light they are on the keyboard interface/relay controller board

Found shorted diodes on main controller relays there are 3 of them that...

Got this one for free because, well, it no worky.

A little research and there are tons of complaints all over forums/the internet about premature failure of these switches. The observation everyone makes about these is "they run hot" and failure occurring as soon as 13 months, right out of warranty, of course.

Upon removal of the cover I found a G0398-15011480A power supply that, when plugged in, was making a constant ticking noise. Multimeter confirmed the PSU was the issue. Output was cycling between 0 and about 20V. With output disconnected it sat around...
