Quick summary.
This is a 7 year old power supply that has been used in a personal computer system under fairly low loads. As such, it's in great shape except for the cooling fan that has gotten noisy at low speeds over the year.
I was contemplating replacing the PSU as it uses a fairly uncommon 135 mm fan but in the end; found a solution. Also, it uses a psu standard 2 pin power adapter which is equally uncommon.

Re: *&^%ing wall-warts
This is a necro thread but my power supply on the GS116 netgear switch also crapped out after a couple of years.
My replacement is now 4 years old and I'm wondering if I should replace it preemtively

Wood's smart strip failure - power strip
So...
This is my second wood's power strip / smartstrip that has failed
I believe it is made by CCI and I see that the new ones are a different color (I don't actually know if it's the same model/ design).
They last between 2-5 years and in this case, the controlled outlets would no longer turn on.
I thought it was a bad cap but upon disassembly, I see it is a burnt out / cracked resister (at least on this one).
I have appended pictures but will not attempt a repair as 1) power strips scare me...I've done computer power...

Re: Netgear GS108
I had the same issues with a progear gs116 (16 port version).
It was definitely a bad capacitor as it was bulging
they replaced it under warranty though.

Buffalo Airstation G54 WYR-G54 Wifi G Router
Adding to the knowledge base.
This is an old router circa 2005 that I had picked up while I was in Japan. It started getting flaky with freezing and disconnects. I retired it from service and finally pulled it apart today to show 2 bad caps (bulging).
They are Teapo 470 uF - 25V caps.
I haven't bothered to fix it yet; with the stock firmware, this would be garbage but I'll see if dd-wrt was ever ported to this device.
Hope this helps someone out there....

Re: Dell TFX power supply - made by Delta DPS-250AB-28
Thank you for the discussion. You are absolutely right about the different suppliers.
I have 5 vostro 200s units for the office; 4 used delta (which had the bulging caps) and one used a bestec tfx unit.
I ended up replacing the badcap on 3 of the delta units; and then swapping the last one out with a seasonic 300w gold just to see how it will compare/last with my repaired PSU's.
The seasonic had some initial coil/component whine when it was plugged in but that seemed to have gone away after...

Re: Dell TFX power supply - made by Delta DPS-250AB-28
Also, just read with great interest your review of the InWin/power tfx PSU. It's pretty cheap here to pick up that unit in Canada.
Any further follow-up comments on that psu?

Re: Dell TFX power supply - made by Delta DPS-250AB-28
Thanks for the quick comment/reply.
I went into the office today to inspect my other 3 dell vostro 200s (purchased exactly the same time).
To add to the knowledge base.
I discovered a quick way to check for the bad cap without disassembly.
These 3 systems ALL booted up easily. HOWEVER, when I disconnected the power cable and drained the capacitor (by pressing the power button with the PSU unplugged a few times); the psu's with the bad caps would not power back on right away...Last edited by kleung; 04-21-2015, 07:47 AM.

Dell TFX power supply - made by Delta DPS-250AB-28
Well, I can't complain as this power supply has been in my Dell vostro 200 slim computer at the office for 7 years. When the PSU died; it did not seem to take out anything else either which is a bonus.
The power supply model is:
Delta electronics - DPS-250AB-28 B
These slim form factor pc's from dell were marketed as the Dell 200s or the Inspiron 530s here in canada.
Surprisingly, the PSU's are a TFX form factor manufactured from delta. The soldering inside was very good. Not sloppy.
One morning, the PC just would not turn on. Looking...Last edited by kleung; 04-20-2015, 11:11 PM.

Re: KZJ Series? (Dell Server Motherboard)
So.... I will add to the knowledge base. I have a 2007 Dell Poweredge 840 Server with the KZJ capacitors.
There is one that shows obvious signs of failure with leaking electrolytes. The ones that failed is a KZJ 6.3 V 1800 uF just like the OP's.
On there board, there are 3 of these KZJ 6.3v 1800 uF capacitors which I have circled on one of the pictures.
Interestingly, I pulled the motherboard out and tested it with an ESR meter and they all showed low/perfect ESR.
I have...

Re: KZJ Series? (Dell Server Motherboard)
Out of curiosity, was this motherboard from a poweredge 840 server.
I have a 840 server where the same caps seem to be failing and i will be performing a repair soon.
luckily, i have a backup server so i will be swapping that motherboard over in the interrim but since that hasn't been recapped and I don't know how many hours, it was used, I am somewhat leary of it.

Re: Dell XM091 (PowerEdge 840) - Help identify caps
it's an old thread but at year 7; i've noticed that my poweredge 840 has a bad cap. in fact, on ebay; i notice that the cap failure is always at the same point around the cpu.
i will be swapping in my backup server's motherboard and then recapping them; will post pictures then.

Re: Perc 5i raid card - SMT capacitor torn off
Thank you for the quick reply.
Now that you point it out to me, I can see the torn trace to the R960 resister.
Many thanks for the help.
Will update if I get it repaired but that looks to be beyond my level of skill and beyond my level of equipment.

Perc 5i raid card - SMT capacitor torn off
So... I bought this poweredge 840 server used off ebay. In shipping, the raid card was not secured and it must have banged around.
Found the card loose with this capacitor that popped off (surface mount).
I've never done smt repair before but since one of the pads is torn off; I was wondering if it is possible to scrape off some of the green surface and solder it back on?
If so, where would I scrape and solder.
I've included pictures for your kind review and opinions.
The card is not expensive. It seems to work even without...

Re: Netgear Prosafe GS116 16 port switch - bad cap.
well, these swithces are marketed for "small business" use and are comparable to the cisco line.
cisco switches also have a lifetime warranty.
the 16 port switch sold for about $180 new at the time i believe.
they are still going for $150 these days.
I bought a cisco 16 port switch in the interim and that was $140
Originaly bought a dlink 16 port switch as a replacement but there are complaints about failed switches on the internet.

Re: Linksys PAP2 - Loud Static
just a quick update.
I have a Linksys SPA2102 @ the office that was running continuously from May 2008.
The PAP2 quality isn't that great (may be the provider) but I finally took the device apart for a quick inspection.
Caps are visually good and are CapXphon branded for all of them.

are there bad caps on fax modems
hi there all,
I get intermittent problems with my windows fax server.
it uses an internal pci faxmodem (agere chipset).
the capacitors on it are small and look ok; has anyone ever seen a faxmodem with bad capacitors.
the fax board is about 6 years old at this point.
thanks

Re: Netgear Prosafe GS116 16 port switch - bad cap.
The deadly thing is that failure is intermittent and inconsistent.
For example; on my network; the local lan worked but the wan did not. I presume it has something to do with traffic volume issues. Also, only a few of the ports were showing issues (2?) which made it really hard to diagnose the problem.
I actually went with a cisco switch as a replacement in the meantime. I will get the warranty repair and probably keep that around as a backup switch after inspecting it for bad capacitors of course.
