Bestec power supplies tend to fry the Southbridge. That was what was burning to cause the smoke smell (most likely). The Southbridge is the big chip usually near the last few expansion slots. It is just about impossible to replace that chip. Even if someone has the tools and the experience to replace the chip, the only place you will be able to get one that is exactly the same is from another motherboard in which case you may as well use that motherboard.

              Deja vu all over again...

Those Bestec comments are spot-on. I have seen EXACTLY those same problems, including the fried Southbridge. Most of the dead boards in my bin are related to Bestec failures.

I have an F.U.D. campaign going on now with all my clients, to replace their aging power supplies before they kill their boards.

I just looked at an E-Machine that I got last week.

Bestec power supply. Toasted board. _NO_ burns by either bridge (north or south).

However, the bios chip itself had cooked. The sticker on it was buckled and warped.

Need to send a broadcast to customres.

yeah I think thats where this psu came from... an emachine had a fried south bridge nForce2 chipset really to bad...

however I assume was something else... and had tested out the psu with a dmm at one point so I dunno..... anyway next time I know....

The main problem with a Digital Multi-Meter is that it only shows the average voltage. You can not see the ripple in the voltage. An oscilloscope would be ideal, however I don't think too many people have one. They can be fairly expensive and bulky.

I have a nice expensive Fluke hand-held oscilloscope - I had to send it back, and they fixed it for free. (was within warranty)

My father has it right now, because he has more use for it. I'm not sure how to even use the sucker

I inherited a client with a group of home-rolled systems and BESTEC power supplies. The PSU was some funky non-standard type with an oddball fan box at the external rear side.

This one killed a beautiful MSI K7N2 Delta2 board, and roasted the south bridge. I found it easier to throw away the case and power supply, and put the remaining machines in standard cases.

I don't know about other Bestecs but the most common model of Bestec 250w unit fries motherboard chipsets right and left.
Emachines was sued over the matter. (And lost I think.)

Those particular PSU's were originally built for OEM's only.
In addition to Emachines they ended up in some Gateway, HP, and Dell? systems.
Later on they started showing up as genaric "xxxxx (brand) replacements".

I saw a Bestec in a Dell Inspiron 531 system. My jaw dropped when I saw it. It's getting more difficult to recommend a value system that doesn't require parts to be replaced in order to last more than 2-3 years.

                              Bestec ATX0300F5WA - fast,or slow blow, fuse?
                              by socketa
I bought a dead motherboard, and connected it to this PSU,
Was checking the standby voltages on the motherboard, and, whilst doing so, the PSU made a loud bang with a flash of light.
So now i truly got a bang for my bucks, and something else to try and fix.
The fuse was blowen, and the top was blowen off of a TNY276PN chip
The glass fuse didn't have any marking to say if it was fast or slow blow
So i checked the marking on the PCB thinking that that would tell me,
but it 's got a T/F8A printed on the board
So should i get a fast blow fuse, or should...

                              Do bad capacitors stink?
                              by 66DarkMatter99
So I just built a new desktop computer and when I play some games I hear a slight electrical squeal noise for a minute while the game loads then the sound goes away. I noticed this sound over the last couple days only right now its followed by an odd dullish, headache inducing smell. This isnt the first time I've smelt this smell from a computer and I'm curious if this is actually a symptom of a bad or blown cap. I haven't inspected yet but soon will. Any thoughts on this?

I just want to hook this setup with your help. Please see the photos of POWER board and LED board.
Is it ok to connect the red cable from LED Board to the POWER board's DIODE
                              with 19V.
Is 19V ok or do I have to use STEP DOWN board to drop from 19 to 12V.
There are no marking on this POWER BOARD, so
I want to know where to connect those 2 yellow wire coming from LED board.

I had one of these croak on me, was wondering why it died.
I had been running it on 120VDC (first half of my transistor magic smoke generator, err, inverter) and that was a suspect, turns out it wasn't.

Cracked it open with a vise, it split up very cleanly. It's a cheap 3-transistor optoisolator feedback design, trimmed by sticking in resistors in a parallel slot.

noted the output was shorted. Pulled secondary rectifier - short still there. Pulled out zener crowbar... short gone and zener was shorted! Checked switch transistor......

I have a Steinberg UR44 audio interface that I had in storage for a few years, and now that I want to use it doesn't power on. I want to take this opportunity to learn electronics repair so I am trying to repair it for learning experience.

I am looking for guidance on how to proceed with troubleshooting the problem.

I have checked the original power supply with a multi meter and it works.

I visually inspected the PCB board and don't see any issues, except what looks like a possible broken fuse but not sure. I checked it for continuity it reads 97 ohms, but...
