Re: Recapping a Packard Bell PB1443CG CRT monitor
Thanks for the suggestions. Definitely sounds like a bad flyback. Hopefully I can find one that will work with this 14" monitor. I believe that, along with the caps and a new HOT will restore this CRT to working order. An unfortunate break since there was no prior warning (no unusual artifacts in the picture; it was uniform, sharp, stable, and had good color).

Re: Recapping a Packard Bell PB1443CG CRT monitor
I'll check it out later. Here's what it sounded like on power-on:

Recapping a Packard Bell PB1443CG CRT monitor
I recently got a Packard Bell CGA monitor from 1988 that let out the magic smoke and I want it to work again. Parts of the pictured board smell of bad electronics but I could not find anything burned. I originally thought it was the Samwha CE-W 220uf 250V 85C input cap, so I replaced it with a Panasonic equivalent (an EE series General Purpose 105C cap). The monitor let out more smoke (there would be no video at any time the monitor was on and it would smoke after about 10 seconds). So I decided to look at all the capacitors in the monitor. Other than one cap near the HOT section (circled in the...

Re: Dell Dimension 4800
In addition to the Dimension 4700 having the bad Nichicons, other Dells I've seen (outside of the GX270 and 280) with them are the Dimension 8300, 8400 (and its Precision 370 cousin) and the 4700C (with Teapos).

FIC K8M-800M woes
This one's hard to understand but here it goes:
I have run into two of these FIC K8M-800M Socket 754 boards with what appears to show the same symptoms, one from Everex, and another from eMachines. The symtom is a garbled screen (see attached image) that also freezes the computer and can happen from trying to do a simple task, heavy disk activity, etc... I've just about done everything other than replacing the motherboard caps and includes:
No overheating, ALL caps look good
2 known working CPUs (Sempron 3000+ and 3300+ rev. E6) (both pass Orthos Prime for...

Re: Envision EN-5200ci recap (success)
The small cap by the mosfet without the heatsink was not changed. I didn't think it would be problematic. If the display acts up again I will change it. This is because when I have to change it I don't want to wait a long time for the PSU to completely drain (I always assume no bleeder resistor and I didn't have what I needed to drain the PSU; can't merely trust the switch!) I'm new at doing this and don't want to zap myself (which is also why I'm afraid to touch the innards of an ATX power supply that was just unplugged, except for the fan)....

Envision EN-5200ci recap (success)
Envision EN5200ci TFT1560PS 15" LCD: Display backlight stayed on for a split second, showing faint picture. PSU (715L1034-1) had bad caps.
Caps:
6x Hermei 470uf 16V replaced with 6x Panasonic FC 470uf 16V
2x Hermei 1,000uf 16V replaced with 2x Panasonic FC 1,000uf 25V
1x Hermei 150uf 50V replaced with 1x Panasonic FC 150uf 50V
1x Hermei 100uf 400V replaced with 1x Panasonic EE 100uf 400V
Before and after pictures included
Yes, the cap nearest the heatsink is sitting high up, I didn't pay attention to the diameter sizes...Last edited by geforcefly; 09-19-2009, 06:05 PM.

Re: Proview Pl926wbi
When I see a display displaying only one color, chances are it's the video cable or the computer's video card. Try a different cable to see if it changes things.

Re: Dimension 8400 with bad HN(M)'s
I ran into the same exact situation with a Dell Precision 370 (which uses the same motherboard as the Dimension 8400) so they aren't immune to the dreaded HN(M)s either.

Re: Kr7a-133r
I saw a Bestec in a Dell Inspiron 531 system. My jaw dropped when I saw it. It's getting more difficult to recommend a value system that doesn't require parts to be replaced in order to last more than 2-3 years.
Bestec = Worstec

Re: Dimension 2350, Surprise, Surprise
The Dell 2350 has the i845GL chipset, which supports only a 400MHz FSB. Your 2.4B P4 will run at most 1.8GHz.

Re: Capacitors on the Foxconn 6150BK8MC motherboard
Thanks for the info. I would recap the board but soldering is not my strongest point at this time. My main goal here is also to help inform others what caps are in the boards I run across before they buy said boards. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to start a thread of a list of current boards that have all good caps.

Caps on the Asus A8V-VM SE motherboard
Socket 939 motherboard with VIA K8M890 chipset
Legend:
Blue: Chemicon KZG 6.3v 3,300uf
Pink: Rubycon MBZ 16v 1,000uf
Red: Panasonic FJS 6.3v 820uf
Green: Panasonic FF 6.3v 330uf
Black: Panasonic MH 10v 100uf
Looks pretty good to me (although KZG might not be the best).
It should outlast the 3-year warranty period....

Re: Capacitors on the Foxconn 6150BK8MC motherboard
I'm not as worried about the Chemicons as much as I am about the Evercon. Anyway, here's this machine's specs:
Antec SLK case (looks like the SLK2600 but in silver)
-- ~25cfm airflow from intake and exhaust fans
Antec Basiq 350W PSU
Foxconn 6150BK8MC motherboard
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ S939 @ 2.0GHz, 1.10v
Arctic Cooling Alpine 7 (CPU max temp 45C/113F at max fan rpm)
512MB PC2100 DDR (carryover from old P4 board) @ 2.50v
One PCI slot used for a dial-up modem

Re: Capacitors on the Foxconn 6150BK8MC motherboard
I got another sample of this motherboard and the unknown capacitor is an Evercon 16v.
Which from what I've seen are formerly known as GSC a.k.a. Gunk Spewing Caps.Last edited by geforcefly; 10-01-2007, 11:00 AM.

Re: Which Sparkle PSU would you get?
I used to have a ATX350-PA until I put it in a Dell Dimension 4600 to replace its failing PSU (random shutdowns, BIOS blaming on thermal event). Good PSU. If memory serves me right there are no dreaded Fuhjjyus in these units.

Re: Antec TruePower Trio 430W
If I'm not mistaken, those are the same brands of caps that I saw in an Antec SU-380 PSU (comes with the Fusion case) that I found in a dumpster just a few days ago (it was dead). The caps that have RLX on them are OSTs.
