I first assumed it's a bad BIOS flash or corrupt CMOS settings, as it would go away once after resetting CMOS, but upon the next reboot it would be there again. Same if i changed any BIOS settings and saved them.

I read that people have flashed BIOSes to no luck, and someone pointed towards a transistor on another (older) board, so i proceeded to look for a hardware issue. And i found it. See attachments for fix.

    Instructions:
    1. Follow directions in pictures
    2. Clear CMOS
    3. Power board up, redo all BIOS settings
    4. Be happy and have a cold one.

This should apply to *all* boards that exhibit this behavior, obviously the parts may be in a different location. Follow these directions to find it if your board differs:
    1. Remove jumper cap from chassis intrusion connector (if you're reading this, you already found it's of no use anyway).
    2. With the board powered ON, measure with your voltmeter and find the pin of the chassis intrusion switch connector that has somewhere between 1.7v and 3.3v on it.
    3. Disconnect board from PSU.
    4. Use continuity tester function of your DMM and probe on the SOT23 transistors next to the super IO controller, you should find it beeps on one of them.
    5. Power the board back ON and find a 3.3v supply nearby
    6. Power board OFF, remove transistor, solder drain connection (it's gonna be the single pad, just like it looks in the picture) to 3.3v supply.

The rest is the same as above.

I'm also going to tell you what causes the issue to appear in the first place in a follow-up post.

    Thx a lot, working here in an ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 followin' your guide. These are the points to jumper in my mobo;

About the "New CPU installed..." issue, I've experienced it in another machine in which a Phenom II 1100T is installed. The previous owner of the processor has blown up a couple of pins (which I'll fix when I have the time), one of those missing pins causes that bios post in my case, beyond that doesn't harm in anything and the machine boots just fine after a couple of seconds. Perhaps in other several cases the same situation could be caused by dust or other debris shorting down the socket, & why not exceeded thermal paste all over the place (I've seen very forgetable scenes...., u surely know 🤣🙈) . Obviously could be caused by bended sockets too, as been said several post above, but a deep clean of the socket could fix the issue in some cases.

Reminds me of my Asus socket 1366 motherboard, using a Radeon RX580, causes to CMOS to get reset, a bad bug!

If this is to do with video card chronology, looks like for Nvidia, would possibly mean you can't install a later video card than a GeForce GTX 980 series on an Asus pre-UEFI motherboard and possibly a Radeon R9 290X for AMD video cards. (suspect it's the VBIOS)

Thanks to this thread and contributors, I finally managed to boot that old Asus at5nm10-i (Atom inside). The chassis-intruded sot-23 diode on this model can be found up to the second 'c' of the label 'clrtc' near an angle of the mobo, if somebody else got one if those relics and need a fast-11-years-repair.

Either the diode is bad or a leaking battery corroded the trace so the battery simply does not get connected to the circuit.
It's been some time, finally making some progress with old projects here...

I found the diode, it tests fine. It comes after a resistor marked 01B (1Kohm) which tests fine. There is a 0.2V forward voltage on both pins.

I think this has more to do with a quirk on some Asus motherboards than it has to do with a defective battery circuit. My question is: What exactly keeps the SPI alive during a no power state when there is no voltage showing on any of the SPI pins... I tested this on a different motherboard, I installed a battery, and I do not see 3V on the VCC pin of the SPI chip. Unless of course there's supposed to always be 3V on VCC, but I don't remember this other motherboard exhibiting this same issue (Asus P5B).

    Thanks

Once you found it, turn all power OFF and unplug the power supply, and set your multimeter to beeper. One probe goes to that pin you found with the voltage on it, and with the other probe measure on the little 3-pin transistors around the Winbond chip. You should find one that beeps on the single pin at the top, which would be the collector or drain.

Return with these results and i will try to help you further.
Hi Th3_uN1Qu3, First of all thanks for posting this solution and keeping this thread alive. I have Asus m5a78l-m lx v2, i dont see any 3 pin transistors near the Super I/O Chip but there is another small chip below the super I/O chip that has those transistors.

Thanks so much. I did the exact same thing on my Asus P5E and it is working perfectly. I used a soldering iron cranked on 420c together with a pre-tinned wire, plus flux on the tinned wire and the surface mount components. I also used electrical tape on neighboring components in order to shield them from heat.

Might help to make your own thread with pictures so we can help you more specifically. If you have a multimeter and know how to use it, finding a way to actually fix the Chassis Intruded issue may actually be easier than messing with BIOS modding.

    yea that works sort of,

i modded my bios to a somewhat decent set of defaults.

the issue is that if i constantly test/reset/test it eventually says chassis intruded.

however given my situation is a bit different (ground has 5v.) and i could not fix it yet, i am stuck with bios modding.

nearly impossible to overclock and save the settings, but im getting by..

my asus maximus 2 formula has an option to save the cmos settings to the hard drive. not sure if the asus p5q has that function as well...

anyway, i heard there are programs that boot to a dos prompt and let u save the cmos settings to a floppy or to the hard drive. everytime u power on the system, boot the cmos program and load the cmos settings saved previously and apply it to the cmos then reboot. saves the trouble of having to constantly change the cmos settings back to what u want them.

another way is to mod the bios to change the cmos settings defaults but bios modding is a highly advanced skillset and u risk bricking the board if u mod the bios incorrectly.

however, none of the above options still exempt u from having to set the system clock to the correct time each time u power on. however, there is now internet time server synchronisation so that is not really a big issue.

I can't even get to "chassis intrusion" error anymore, and that's not solved yet.
Be careful, the P5Bs possibly have bad caps! Likely before Asus regularly used Fujitsu/FP cap caps! Being a P5B, it possibly has bad wet electrolytic caps!

If wet electrolytic caps, probably Ost. Ost caps are known to sometimes, if not randomly fail.

    *cant edit my message

but i also have continuity to more than one transistor, so i decided not to go ahead with the mod. pin 3 (intrusion signal) has continuity to multiple spots on the motherboard.

    a head scratcher for sure

great info, thanks for keeping this alive.

    i have an odd one here;

    p5q

5v showing on the pin4 (ground)

So i read another tutorial saying if you have voltage on the ground pin, the pins wont jump and put intrusion detection at its normal state. (jumped signal and ground)

I have 5v on the ground pin...so i tried grounding the signal and ground pin on that header to a psu ground.
    This did not work unfortunately.

my workaround so far has been no cmos battery, AMIBCP to modify the bios to my liking and just let it restore defaults every boot.
problem with this, is i can not overclock or tune the bios much.

    any thoughts on the matter?

Double-check your 3.3V source and make sure it actually has enough current to drive the LPC/SIO chip. I would run a wire from the 3.3V rail directly and hook it up with a 1K-4.7K resistor instead.

I have a P5K-E that basically ignores the CMOS battery... If power is disconnected from the system completely, it loses all the BIOS settings. Is this also because of a weak transistor?

    Thanks
