    viewsonic vp201s missing colours

    Hello

I have two viewsonic vp201s 20.1" lcd monitors that work ok, but are missing colors. I know they are missing colours because it is missing the graident transitions between colours. It happens on all modes. I have narrowed it to the monitors alone as I tried other montors and the 32bit even 16bit color looks perfect on my other lcd monitors.

Kinda looks like im lim running in 64k color instead of in the 16 or 32 bit resolution. Sounds kinda crazy but ill try and take a pix. Seems like one of the viewsonics is missing more color then the other.

Also one of my monitors also exhibit the messed up picture symptom here as well, when you turn it on all you see is vertica lines.

btw I didnt see any bad caps on the boards

    any ideas would be appreciated.

Replace the Elite brand caps if you have any.
[Viewsonic likes those and they suck.]

Did you do as PCBONEZ suggested?
Have you resolved the VP201s issue?

havent had time to tear it apart yet, do you think caps will cause missing colours?

A variating voltage coming from a PSU with bad caps can cause the VBoard to do crazy stuff... yes, it is possible.

            Re: viewsonic vp201s missing colours

I've had this problem on a VP201b and now it's just *dead*...for months I had it working almost in less colors than the 16.7M that I was outputting to it.

Now the light is just amber and won't go to green no matter what signal I send to it...

            Thoughts?

            Thanks!

Open it, take pics, post them, and post cap info for both the PSU & the VBoard. Maybe it is a cap problem, maybe not, but more info is needed to get to a conclusion.

                Re: viewsonic vp201s missing colours

can you guys let me know how to open this thing? There are 4 screws on the back but the stand needs to come out and I can't see how that would work? There are 4 little screws under the plastic cover at the mating between the stand and the panel; took those out to be faced with the larger nuts that pivot the LCD around...

Do those have to be taken out or is there something else?

                Thanks!

                  Re: viewsonic vp201s missing colours

I have a new update of this issue; which is very strange.

I took the monitor out and plugged it into my laptop; via the D-SUB I get an image which is very blue-ish (almost like on a normal monitor would be under a warmer color). So for example if I set the color to 9300K on this monitor it's the same as it would be at 6500K on a normal monitor....it's very blue-ish/warmer.

There's nothing out of the DVI input?

                  Does this make any sense?

                  Thanks!

If you put the monitor facing away (screen) from you, so the back is in front of you, you should see a plastic cover (oval like) that can easily be removed pulling it out. Under that oval cover lie 5 screws that keep the stand attached to the monitor. Remove those 4 and the stand comes off. After the 4 screws in the monitor corners are removed, you can easily open it ...
And in what thread will you be posting, this one, or the other VP201 one, so I can track the right one? I still have one of those units (about to sell it) and maybe I can help you.

                      Re: viewsonic vp201s missing colours

                      Ok got it...

Removed the cover and I was astounded to find the other covers underneath/etc.

Going through the process of removing those now and will take pictures.

Everything inside looks pristine; there's a strange looking epoxy (white) which is around some of the cap leads/etc. but I assume that is normal (it's definitely some kind of epoxy shielding?)...

I did do one thing before going further - unplugged and re-plugged the connectors on the left side of the panel, which looks like they go to the LCD inverter?

Interestingly enough after doing this, I was able to get a very clear image on the D-SUB connector; no more blue-ish tint...

The DVI connector is still dead -- how can that be???

                      Thanks!

[PS - I'll continue to post in this thread]

[PPS - can you PM me about the LCD that you're selling and the condition? Crazy as it might sound after my recent experience - I might be interested in another one ;-)]

No idea on the DVI input. It would be more logical to me that the blue hue was caused by a bad VGA cable, but it is possible to be caused by the "internal VGA connection", if you can call it that way (I guess LVDS connection would be more correct). As for the LCD, a friend of mine (a very good one) asked for it and I could not say no. They are great units, BTW.

My lcd is exhibiting the same symptoms as yours, with the missing colours. One use to work, but now all it does is just just flickering like crazy, once it works it works fine until I unplug it. But that one too is missing coloursjust less colours.

My other viewsonic works all the time no problems other then the missing colours. I tried the dvi and d sub both are ok. I ripped both apart and was going to swap the power board inside but had problems removing the board from the frame. The caps look ok on both, but dont have the tools to check them nor had the time to buy replacements.

I have replaced the fuse on the inverter of one of them previously.

I just ordered a dead VP201B from eBay to see if I can swap some things and get my colors back. I don't know if it's a mainboard or inverter problem; the DVI issue definitely seems to be related to the mainboard.

the inverter will not cause the display to lose colors, im leaning more towards the mainboard as everything else is fine except for the missing colours. lmk how yours turns out i may do the same if

Agree. The main board is almost for sure the culprit.
