Gateway HD 2201 Monitor 2 Seconds to Black

Came here looking for an answer if anyone could help.
I have a Gateway HD2201 monitor which had the 2 seconds to black issue. I found this capacitors kit on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/230554160952...T3%26ga4m%3DT8

Got all the caps replaced except for the big 450v one. The screen worked perfect for about 5 days with very minimal usage, I have a crypto currency mining rig and most of the time the screen is off. Then all of a sudden the same issue happened, 2 seconds to black all over again, I thought it might be the big 450v cap. Went online and found jameco website, where I found the 450v cap and with it I ordered all the caps again just just in case I got a defective one in the kit I got from eBay.

I switched all the caps again including the 450v this time, but I still got the same problem. I see the screen with the flashlight test but other than that I don't know what to do.
I have a cheap multimeter from harbor freight (sorry pro people, I know its an insult of a multimeter) Im trying to work with what I have.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I did go to the thread that has all the info of what to test and how to test but honestly I found that a bit advanced to my understanding especially after following some of the steps where I got different results than what the thread said it should be.

If someone with experience can point me to what usually goes wrong in these boards. If the backlights are burnt, is there a way to test them and be 100% sure? What doesn't make sense to me is why do they turn on for 2 seconds if they are completely burnt?

I hope I fix this thing to put it back together because having it in pieces scattered around in not helping my sanity.

    Cheers to all

You are not getting any answers possibly because we need pictures of your boards.
Good clear ones top and bottom.

The lamps do not need to be completely burnt if say you have 4 tubes in there 3 may be ok 4th may be off - did you try and notice in the 2 seconds?
Maybe it lights a bit but if it does not fully light -a message is fed back and protection kicks in switching it all off. something to try if the leads will fit is swapping them between connectors - top bulbs get hot and generally start to fail first.

Find a post by Budm and in his signature there is a guide to making a test bulb from a 14w cfl

Thank you so much for your reply. I did check the other posts and it seems there are a lot of variables to test/change. I realized some members have hawk eyes and can spot bad soldering from pictures. Taking your advice, I am attaching some pictures of my board, hopefully someone can help me.

Different angles of the board, top and bottom. I also attached pictures of the caps I got.

Picture 5 is the caps I got from eBay kit which I replaced with other caps that I order from another store when I thought the big 450 cap needed to be replaced. After replacing all the caps again including the 450 and still got the same problem, I reverted back to the original 450 cap but kept the caps I soldered the second round. Hope Im making sense and really appreciate your help.

Sorry internet problems too late to say much.
Here is a test you can do though.

Thank you for your reply, anything helps. I will check this and post results. If you see this before I post my results, can you tell me what reading should I get on the meter?

Varies from monitor to monitor the actual value is less important than they are within 3% of each other I would guess between 900 and 1100 ohms but dont worry as I may be way out

I also meant to say you should be ok with the capkit from that seller - he is a good one.

I got 654 on s1 to s2 and 651 on s3 to s4. What does that tell us?
I switched polarities and got same results on both.

Suggests I was way out but the transformers look ok.

Did you try swapping lead around or building a test bulb/?

I didn't build a test bulb as I am trying to keep that as a final option since I will have to order those pins with the high voltage wires http://www.lcdparts.net/PartDetail.aspx?ProductID=2708

I am not sure what do you mean by swapping lead around?

You can solder the test lamp wires directly to the lamp socket pins on the circuit board.

Does all the pins have to be occupied for the board to send a signal? (soldering 4 lamps?) also when testing should I have input coming in from the computer to the board?

You have to have all the lamps connected and all the boards connected, plus it must be connected to running PC to supply the video signal so the monitor will not go into standby mode.
You can solder in two test lamps first in the top or bottom set of the lamp connectors, the other set of the lamps form the LCD panel will be connected to the other set of lamp connectors, then turn on the monitor to see if the lamps will stay on, if they do, then the set of lamps that are not connected are bad. If you still get the 2-second to black, then you will have to move the set of test lamps the other set of lamp sockets, the set of lamps that were not connected will be plugged into the lamp sockets that you have the test lamps soldered to. You are trying to see which set of lamps are bad basically.

Finally got some time to test this. First thank you for your time and replies.

I soldered a 14w cfl and I shot a video of the result to show how it acted.

The cfl would blink and also the screen light, the entire screen turn on with a white/grey color for 2 seconds and turn off. I have an HDMI cable connected and the pc was awake.

Check the video, its only 40 seconds long http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gWNy...ature=youtu.be

                            cheers!

OK from the pictures, you now have tested 3 of the 4 lamps and it still shutdown, so now remove the lamp that is connected to the connected next to the test lamp, and connected the other lamp connector into that socket and see if the lamp will still shutdown.
I only take 1 of 4 lamps to cause the 2-second shut down. I always use at least two test lamps to find out if the bottom pair or the top pair of the lamp assembly is bad.

I only take 1 of 4 lamps to cause the 2-second shut down. I always use at least two test lamps to find out if the bottom pair or the top pair of the lamp assembly is bad.
I just read your reply again and realized that you mean just to switch the connectors. But I actually switched the CFL to the other spot AND did the connector switching like you are suggesting above, but this time the screen and the CFL stayed on.

OK, I am confused now, at first you have the test lamp connected to the top connector and one of the lamp with pink/white on the bottom connector, the lamp with blue and white not used. The result was 2-second to black, then you move the pink/white to top connector, test lamp on the bottom connector, then all the lamps stay on. I did not expect when pink/white move to the top and test lamp on the bottom will make the lamps stay on.
So what happen now if you have all the monitor's lamps connected back in place?
What I want you to so on post 15 was to still leave the test lamp on the top socket but now use the lamp with blue/black in place of the lamp pink/white to see if the lamps will stay on, that will tell us if the set of top lamp is good or bad, if it does stay on then that will tell me the lamp with pink/white is bad.
So start testing again as in post 14 to see if it will still go out, if it does, then put the lamp with blue/black in place of pink/white to see if the lamps will stay on.
You should also inspect the lamps sockets to make sure the pins inside are not bent.

Well ,that sure does not make sense that the lamps now stay on.
Will all the lamps stay on with all original lamps connected? I wonder if the bottom connector has bent pins or cold joint on the pins since you solder in the test lamp to the bottom connector instead of using the socket.

                                          Good evening, gentlemen.

I have a problem with my monitor. It turns off after a few seconds or flickers. Shining a flashlight on the screen doesn't show any image, so I guess it's not the "2 seconds to dark" I read in the forum.

To turn it back on, I have to press the power button twice. Then after a few seconds it turns off again or flickers. See video.

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Looking through my repair pictures and notes, it's been a long time since I posted anything in the LCD monitors section. So here goes that.

I'm dedicating this thread to one of the very first LCD monitors I repaired (if not the first one), which was more than 10 years ago now. The monitor is a Wise Wing, model F199. It's a 19” CFL-backlit LCD.
