Can a DC motor start then just ... stop?

I have a DC motor and when I apply voltage to it, it starts to spin for about a good full second, then it just ... stops ...

    How is this possible?

maybe the winding has a break that opens when it heats up.

      does it have brushes ?
      are the bearings free ?

So I put it on a Buck converter and started it out at 1 volt... it ran continuously ... but when I bring it to about 2.5V, it stops. But under 2.5, it runs. It's rated for 12 volts.

        Thoughts?

          Does it work at 12V?
If not, stj had the most likely reason.

If it works at 12V (and 8V)...then we're probably dealing with the behavior of the buck PSU that's turning the motor.

It was just a 2 post standard 12 Volt motor. I bought a replacement for it cause it was only $7.

I was just wondering what might cause the problem I was having.

Of course, this being from Amazon, there's very little technical information, let alone a proper product datasheet. (I love how they give a vague RPM and rated voltage range. What about stall current? Stall torque? Maximum efficiency at ___ RPM?? A datasheet could answer all of that. On that note, I really don't understand why people buy so much junk from Amazon. It's the worst place when it comes to product info. Even the most terribly translated eBay listings I've seen usually provide better product specs. And Amazon prices are usually pretty ripoff too. $7 for that motor? Hope you at least got one with carbon brushes. But truthfully, I really wish Amazon would stop selling electrical components. /rant.)

Anyways, is the motor about 30 mm long and 22-23 mm in diameter?
If so, that probably is a 280 size motor. If that's the case, I suspect it may be stopping due to worn/bad sleeve bearing(s). Was this motor brand new when you got it or was it used for a while? Being motor with vibration cam makes it even more susceptible to bearing wear.

When I was a kid, I had at least a dozen of toy RC cars end up with seized drive motors like that after many years of use. The way to fix a motor like that is to disassemble it and clean/resurface the sleeve bearings - something probably not worth doing on a cheap/small motor like that, especially if it has a metal back cover (harder to remove.) But it is doable and similar to fixing sleeve bearing computer fans.

Of course, before you conclude anything, how about first try connecting the motor to a known good DC power source to see if it stops or not. I suggest using a standard 5V power adapter or something similar. If it doesn't stop, then whatever circuit you had this in may not be functioning or driving the motor correctly. Otherwise, it's likely worn/bad bearing, as I mentioned above.
                              * OR *
If the motor stops randomly after running for a while, it is also possible that it may have bad/misaligned/worn brushes. It's rare, but it can happen sometimes on these small cheap motors.

                                Hi,

i am asking for some Help.
I have one of these Nescafe Aeroccino (Milk Frother) things with a bad motor.
The Motor didn´t start anymore and internet is full of users just swapping the motor for a Mabuchi RF-500TB-12560.
So i got a few of these from Banggood.

I swapped the motor and now i have a new fault condition.

In a working Frother you would press the start button, it will light red and work for a few minutes.
If you press longer it will light blue and just mixup the milk.

With the new Motor it just starts...

I don't know if anyone here has experience with Japanese slot (pachislo) machines, but I sure hope so. I bought this machine last week in semi-working order. It would play and the reels would spin, but the stop buttons would not stop them at all. I found that the high-frequency filtering tantalum capacitor was bad on the reel stop board, along with the fuse being blown. I replaced the fuse and removed the capacitor. I haven't replaced the cap yet because I didn't have one on hand, but it's not necessary for the operation of the machine.

The issue now is the Stop buttons are intermittently...

                                Hi all forum members,
Found this unknown motor discarded in a junk yard and took home for learning experience. By the look of it, I suspect it is taken out from a type of air blower probably running on ac power. I used digital multimeter on ohm/resistance scale and it doesn't read anything on those 2 black wires. So, this motor is not shorted and should be good to run.

Correct me if i am wrong on the initial test.
Can anyone kindly advice on how to test run this motor based on visible external two black wires. Fyi, i don't see any marking on the motor body nor smell anything...

                                (TL;DR skip the first paragraph)
I encountered my first dead motor run capacitor at a customer this week.
For some fields I guess it is a very common occurrence but the usual way for industrial machines here is to use 3-phase motors.
(Unless a servo motor makes more sense that is).
But for some reason this 3-phase machine uses a 1-phase motor for its liquid coolant pump.
The pump would run but sometimes trip the 10A breaker.
I monitored it starting and stopping for over an hour until it finally stopped in a specific spot between its windings:
                                Then it could...

Hoping someone here will be able to provide a few pointers with this. I've got a motor controller board for a device that moves a caravan. A DC motor on each wheel is supplied with 12v DC or -12V DC depending on whether the remote control is pushed in "forward" or "backward" mode. The control is arranged by having 2 relays per motor that, at rest, are all connected to the negative.. If the motor is to go forwards, then relay 1 activates meaning the motor sees "positive negative" on its terminals 1 and 2. If the motor is to go backwards then relay 2 activates meaning...
