    Creep Corrosion on PCB's

    I'm seeing this on Western Digital HDD's and Synology NAS in dry, not corrosive home environments.

    It's a black fuzzy slime on PCB's mainly on via's, any exposed copper.

    Thought it was just due to manufacturing crappy PCB wash, but after searching the web- it is metal-sulfide dendrites that cause semi-conducting/shorting problems.
    It looks like due to RoHS - lead-free, immersion tin and organic flux.

    Do people know about this? I just learned it.
    I use a toothbrush and IPA, give the board a scrub and it's OK afterwards. But under a BGA?

    Ooh...or..oh.. My home-made untested organic flux. After few years I have return customers....

    "...........But under a BGA?" How about Ultrasonic Cleaner?

      Often referred to as tin whiskers, a well known problem that plagued not just early transistors but a range of electronics. One of the reasons for the lead component in solder I believe, with this lead free rubbish it now seems to be making a comeback. From what I read ultrasonic cleaning can get rid of some of it but it grows back.

          One interesting thing to note from budm's linked articles is the fact that the dendrite growth was found on solder domes where they weren't completely covered by conformal coating. Also, the test was performed on "no-clean" assemblies, I wonder what the results would be if the assemblies had been cleaned first?

            The Obsolescence of TV is at fast speed, plasma TV and CCFL TV already are out of date, Tin whiskers and Creep Corrosion are not common on TV service maintenance, more often I've seen are water-damage?

                Thank you, Per Hansson, I check my not working WD 2000: 200G IDE 5". See if you're right?

                pic3, 4: U1 This Disc motor drive IC is burnout, it is a common problem.

                pic 5, 6, 7 : The connectors to the HD heads, are like you said, are really bad, Thank you, I really did not pay attention to it.

                  We're talking three different PCB problems?

                  Tin Whiskers - metal hair/tin crystals forming shorts
                  Creep Corrosion - copper/silver plating dendrites (fern shaped) forming bridging growth
                  Oxidation - oxygen reacting with the metal, basically corrosion so high resistance connection {no shorts}

                  The metallurgy mechanisms are different I think.

                  The 2005 WD hard-drive head contacts look like PCB gold plating (ENIG finish) against a tin connector? The motor is all gold connections. Ah the good old days.

                    I too have seen this in a Synology DS412+ and it's replacement DS415+, took approximately 2yrs from new to failure. I have also seen it in a WD hard drive enclosure, searching the internet I found this paper that takes about it in extreme situations.

                    Pictures of Synology and HD enclosure are below. The thing I don't get is where the sulfur is coming from, possibly the rubber mounts? Other theory is that it is in the drywall, apparently it comes from coal burning plants and mixes in with the gypsum so comes out of the drywall with moisture. We do have a lot of coal burning plants where I live (Alberta), so maybe....

                      I got a huawei D15 that came in for no power repair. Device charges , charging led flashedms but doesn't turn on. I found corrosion on an IC (ic name is BDJCY1...I can't find out much info about it online). I removed this ic and two pads are corroded but they can be repaired. To my knowledge inductors never short to ground (i might be wrong and please those that are more knowledgeable than me can correct me). I found few inductors short to ground when my multimeter is in beep mode ,indicating a short in the line of those inductors...but I don't know how to go about to find the shorted component...

                      Hi Guys,
                      I have a Logitech Z506 with some problem.
                      The main problem was the front right and subwoofer gave a hard noise.
                      After the disassemble I found many corrosion on the mainboard as you can see on the pictures.
                      I removed the corrosions and the noise disappeared but the sound too.

                      I think some parts is damaged because of the corrosion.
                      I searched a lot on the internet but I cant find correct schematic for this pcb, so I dont know what is the correct values of the damaged parts.
                      But I found same good pictures of this board.

                      Hello guys,

                      I'm learning about logic board (motherboards) repairs. I don't do repairs professionally, but I manage from time to time to repair something for my family and friends.

                      What caught my attention is this visual inspection guide written by Louis Rossmann. It seems that corosion on probe points on the motherboard can "kill" Macbook. https://wiki2.rossmanngroup.com/inde...ual_inspection
                      I wonder how corrosion cause this. If there is a track that has a probe point made on it and corrosion is build up on that place, does this means...

                      Hi All.

                      I have a A3113 MacBook Air 13" (M3) that had minor liquid damage. The screen remains on if the lid is closed, the keyboard doesn't work, but trackpad and Touch ID does.​
                      The LAS was corroded, but I have tested it on an A2681 (M2) and it functions fine. Anyway, I ordered a new one and replaced it and calibrated it with Apple.

                      I have checked the main voltages going to the daughterboard and they are present. Diode mode reading on the LAS line which goes direct to the SoC is also correct, no short.

                      So then I replaced the daughterboard, and...

                      Rivets (eyelets) in PCBs?!

                      I noticed some PCB manufacturers insert what appear to be rivets/eyelets in their single sided PCBs. What appears to be silly ways to do PTVs, this is clearly not the case as the board is SS.

                      So what are these rivets/eyelets for? They make desoldering annoying due to making a gap for solder to come out, though it does provide strength for the pads. Perhaps they were put there specifically to protect the pads? Then why isn't this common practice among all PCB manufacturers?
