Re: Any Substitute for Iso Propyl Alcohol IPA that could find in a general hardware s
Really aggressive, MEK can dissolve potting material. I wonder if something like MAP sensor cleaner would be better. But if you've got access to an auto parts store they should have electrical contact cleaner which would probably be your best choice....

Re: Viewsonic 27" LCD turns off after a while -- longer on VGA, Shorter on HDMI?
Thanks for the link. I was right it was more for shipping than the part. I really should have tried removing the blown out part before I ordered the replacement. Even with the 8 bucks for the unused MP1484 it's a grand total of 31 bucks to get a 27" monitor going.

Re: Analog Scope vs Digital Scope
My two cents on analog vs digital meters.
My goto meter is a fluke 85. It's taken a beating over the years. Love the fact it has separate switch positions for AC and DC volts. Downside is the fuses in it are expensive.
Got a couple of analog Simpson meters. They're nice because they aren't too sensitive. I've been burned before when an autoranging AC/DC digital voltmeter was reading noise instead of what I was really looking for and I didn't see it was showing AC volts instead of DC.

Capt.Hook,
Thanks. Looks like I shorted the output to ground. Hopefully it didn't take anything else out. Anybody want to bet shipping will be more than the device? Not gonna wait for a part from China.....

Re: Analog Scope vs Digital Scope
I have a 475A that just keeps going and going. With a quick glance you can tell how it's setup. No punching buttons to drill down to a menu to set something. Twist or push and it's setup and good to go. Not to say that there aren't advantages to digital scopes but I will have an analog scope until the day I die.....

Re: Viewsonic 27" LCD turns off after a while -- longer on VGA, Shorter on HDMI?
So on my board it seems as though it was IC502, between the two inductors, that was getting HOT. I had a little problem and ended up letting the sparks and smoke out of it. I didn't feel like changing the thermocouple to an non-conductive one and the bead slid off the IC onto the pins, thus leading to the sparks and smoke.
Could you do me a favor and let me know what markings yours has on it? I can't seem to read the markings that are left on mine.
Thanks.....Last edited by srhofmann; 04-13-2017, 10:14 AM.

Re: Viewsonic 27" LCD turns off after a while -- longer on VGA, Shorter on HDMI?
Turns out I lied. Made it fail using the PC and then immediately tried a media player and it does fail. Haven't tried the VGA input but I'll throw something on it and try it. It definitely seems to be heat related because it ran for almost an hour this morning before it failed and now it's resetting/rebooting every few minutes. I guess it's time to open it up and take a look....Last edited by srhofmann; 04-11-2017, 11:20 AM.

Re: Viewsonic 27" LCD turns off after a while -- longer on VGA, Shorter on HDMI?
Perfect timing for this thread. I just put a new video card in a desktop and it's doing the exact same thing with the same Viewsonic monitor. The weird thing with mine is that if I use either hdmi input with a media player it doesn't seem to fail or at least I haven't seen it fail.

Re: Electronics simulation software suggestions
Try playing with some of the free simulators and see what features you need vs. the features you want. Generic schematic simulation or PCB layout with simulation. Analog, digital or mixed signals are completely different animals. When you get up to the HIGH frequencies you need to start looking at physical conductor design of interconnects between devices

Re: Suggestions for good plenum grade cat 5e cable
I just have to ask why? You said that you were going to use this for telephone service why spend the money? It's overkill! For decades POTS service was delivered using unshielded, untwisted pairs. If you've already got Cat 3 installed it should be fine.....

Re: Suggestions for good plenum grade cat 5e cable
If it just plain old fashioned telephone, not voip, literally any kind of wire will work. It only needs to have a bandwidth of 10Khz, not megahertz rated cable. Doesn't even need to be twisted pair. Bell wire would work fine......
It's not a signal and ground in a pair, it's a differential pair. One wire is driven high while the other wire is driven low. It's a coupled pair. The wires are twisted around each other so if any interference is induced in one wire it will also be induced in the other wire. But since it's...

Re: Suggestions for good plenum grade cat 5e cable
Go with a name brand cable that actually has some specs published. There's more to ethernet cable than just the just the pairs of wires. The number of twists per inch, the skew between pairs and overall attenuation are usually the most critical factors in how well a cable performs. If there aren't any real specs available for the cable avoid it.
Belden 1585A is good choice, it's been around a while. I'm in the process of redoing a lot of the wiring in my house and I'm using 1872A. It's a bitch to work with but I...

Re: Creep Corrosion on PCB's
One interesting thing to note from budm's linked articles is the fact that the dendrite growth was found on solder domes where they weren't completely covered by conformal coating. Also, the test was performed on "no-clean" assemblies, I wonder what the results would be if the assemblies had been cleaned first?

Re: What Solution To Use In Ultrasonic Bath?
Deionized water is commonly used in the manufacturing of PCBs. It is highly reactive and can potentially damage parts if they're left in it too long. Don't think I'd ever use tap water even as a first cleaning step. Reverse Osmosis (RO) water with a detergent, if necessary, is a good first cleaning step. Follow that up with some DI water and you should be good to go.
You should be extremely careful when using any kind of chemical when cleaning boards. Some of them will dissolve plastic parts and encapsulation and others...
