    5 band resistor

Hi all, Been a while since i have been in...

Ok I am used to 4 band resistors but have a 5 band here that doesnt make sense to me... Bands go :

    black - purple - silver - gold - green

This is a power resistor pulled from a ATX switching PSU.

Anyone shed some light onto what this is?

Almost a rainbow - what does it test at.
Picture might help - as close up as you can get

It tests as closed as its blown.

      Will upload pic shortly

I would upload a pic but for the life of me can't figure where i put it?! :S Assuming the Mrs has been messing again! lol

          Re: 5 band resistor

This is a very weird one! :p Never seen that before... Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The black means 0 (not sure about that)
          The purple means 7
The gold is a divider (10x maybe)
The silver is another divider (100x??)
The green band is the tolerance of ±0.5%

So that means it's a 0.007 ohm ±0.5% resistor???? As well put a wire in it's place... I am not sure of that....

            Re: 5 band resistor

mixed up the gold and silver there :p

I am assuming the silver is actually grey though is shiny :S

            so would be

            0
            7
            8
            x10
            0.5

It should be gray... impossible to have 2 shiny bands on a 5 band resistor.
That would be a 0.78 ohm ±0.5 % resistor. That makes more sense now!

And the gold band is a divider not a multiplier. If it were a multiplier it would be a colored one not a metallic colored one. Just to clarify things.

                  Re: 5 band resistor

The other issue: I thought, except for 0 ohm resistors, the first band is never black?
In the 0 ohm resistor the black band is the only band... You make 0.xxx resistors by going down another decade with the multiplier. (black=x1, gold=x.1, silver=x.01)

The usual "common" resistors with the same metallic and purple patterns could be red-purple-silver-gold-green (0.27R 5%) or yellow-purple-silver-gold-green (0.47R 5%) but the green doesn't make too much sense either.

Usually 5-band resistors are precision resistors and have three color bands (first is still never black), multiplier, and tolerance band in that order.

                    Re: 5 band resistor

can you post a picture of it?
my thoughts on it for what there worth
that first black band makes no sense, are you sure its black?
also I think it may be a 4 band resistor, you ignore the last, which in your case is green

                      Re: 5 band resistor

I asked for that early doors - its always a problem - silver could be grey or even white- gold could be orange or yellow- as another poster said black "0" for ring one doesnt make much sense. Resistors for " military" use seem to have random rings.
Time they got together and came up with a better system.

Perhaps the black is brown? I've been fooled more than once by some resistors color bands. Good light is a must.

Good pictures and where it is used will be a clue, until we see the picture. I have seen burnt resistor that was over heat, the red band turns black.
