    L-shaped thermal pad

I bought one of these for my laptop:
    http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...1-G-ND/3260501
I thought the picture was just a representative picture for the entire series of thermal pads, but it really is L-shaped. What would need that?

You can do better than silicon elastomer for laptops. There's a material that is soft and malleable which conducts heat far better in my opinion. How much space is there between the ehatsink and the northbridge?

What other materials are there? I saw some better pads on Digi-Key, but they cost almost a dollar more and were still silicone elastomer. I didn't want to spend as much as I did on this weird pad.

It's actually on the CPU. The laptop is very old, and the CPU probably doesn't use much power. There appears to be a 0.5mm gap. The 1mm thick pad is thicker than the original.

You need to look at Thermal conductivity: the higher the number the better.
Thermal Resistivity: the lower the number the better.

The best stuff I've seen so far is fujipoly. I bought the pink one from eBay, but I don't see it listed anymore...

I was going to get something like this, but the higher thermal conductivity pads cost more than I was willing to pay for such an old laptop.

woow. i`m the only one who use copper plate? i cut the plate in the shape i need(headsink shape) for 2 reasons:
                1. press the chip back so i don`t have to reflow again (few come back)
                2. Believe it or not i got a dv9000 for free and i reflow the video card and use a lot of copper for video card, memory and chipset and the little b...ard stays at 45C.

honestly prefer my method that is not a industrial method to reduce costs.

                Copper FTW!

I was going to use copper for my HP G56, but the angle at which the heatsink touches the northbridge isn't even. I needed something soft that could compensate for the difference in height, that's why I used fujipoly.

yee but i have many types from 0.4mm ->1mm so i can compensate the difference in hight. i rly like it i swear its like making a sandwich in there

                      That Fujipoly stuff looks nice.

The higher thermal conductivity stuff might be good since the fan in this laptop never shuts off once the CPU gets hot enough for the fan to start running. Maybe that stuff will keep the temperature low enough for the fan to stop. I might try one of the Fujipoly pads.

I was thinking about making a copper shim, but I don't know where to get copper sheets and I didn't think it was worth it for this old laptop.

I'm still wondering what that L-shaped pad would be used for.

How do you compensate for the difference in height if the angle of the heatsink is crooked?

So far so good... It has a playdough consistency, so the only drawback to it is that it may not stand up well if you disassemble the heatsink often... It's not as inexpensive as silicon pads, but considering it's a one time thing, it more than pays for itself.

like i said i got a dv9000 from dead and i copper shim the sucker that he is sitting 50C medium temp.
i got a dv6000 tomorrow to do so i will film that part only with the copper so i can edited in this weekend

I have a Dell Latitude 5570 that was randomly shutting down, on further investigation i found that the machine had been shutting down due to thermal events as noted by windows event viewer.
My investigations lead me to the dell diagnostics screen, where i found that there were two sensors out of range which had been causing the shutdowns, one of which was the GPU thermal sensor and the other the ambient sensor.

                            by Veyron7887
Hi. I have Asus X55C laptop from year 2013. It has i3-2328M CPU. I replaced stock thermal paste with high quality thermal paste. Before thermal paste replacement, I measured CPU temperature Around 65-70 degrees Celcius with stock thermal paste. If after the replace thermal paste, I measured CPU temperature around 80-84 degrees Celcius and fan don't stop when system is idle. I replaced the thermal paste several times but still did not change. Where is the problem?

                            Can thermal paste cause corrosion?
                            by caspian
                            Dear members,

I have got an ordinary gray thermal paste that has no name/model on the box.
I put some of this thermal paste on a 128-pin QFP IC. A bit of this thermal paste was put on pins of the IC.
I tried to clean the pins by thinner but the thermal paste cannot be cleaned from the pins properly. because the pins are tiny and the thermal paste is stuck between them.
Is it possible that the thermal paste damages pins of the IC in long term by creating corrosion or something?
Is it safe to leave the thermal paste on the pins?
                            I guess the thermal paste...

Fixed a Velodyne DPS-12 Subwoofer. Thermal Management + Heatsink Grounding Question
                            by nobbnobb1
                            Hello,

I have a Velodyne DPS-12 subwoofer that was making weird noises. Upon taking it apart, I noticed there was yellow glue all over the circuit board which had turned brown, so I scraped it all off and that fixed the problem. I used hot glue instead around the various components.

There was also one bulging capacitor, and another that must've been in a really hot location because the labelling looked like it was scorched. You can see in the picture the circuit board has discolored over time from this heat. Could either be from the MOSFET (with heatsink), or the resistor....

MSI GP62MVR-7RF - weird fan / thermal issue
                            by gurj1979
Hey guys, I need help with my personal MSI GP62MVR-7RF. Annoying fan / thermal issue.
Machine Idle. Fan will spin medium speed for 4 seconds, then off for 1 second. Repeat forever.
CPU and GPU are cold. No load, just sitting doing nothing.
It's clean inside, nothing blocked. New MX4 paste.
Updated BIOS, EC, and VBIOS but nothing's helped.
Schematic shows 2 thermal resistors, but they're OK.
All thermal signals are good, inc PCH.

Has anyone ever come across this ? Any idea what to do ?
Could it be a faulty CPU / PCH / KBC ? I REALLY don't want...
