Why did they tweak the voltage?

I have several USB 3.0 to SATA adapters based on the ASMedia ASM1051 bridge chip, and on some of the boards the LM1117 ADJ type voltage regulator is tweaked with the addition of a couple of resistors to raise its output from its normal 1.25V to 1.30-1.33V. The resistors were tacked on to the pins; the boards weren't laid out for them:

There doesn't seem to be any relationship between the dates of the boards and chips and whether the voltage was tweaked, but why would a digital circuit like this need its supply voltage tweaked?

Ouch. I've seen bad but not quite that bad of "last minute tweaking."

It sounds like bad circuits design that it cannot handle 5% voltage tolerance.

Re: Why did they tweak the voltage?

The description says the IC has a 3.3v to 1.2v regulator.

Maybe they accidentally wired 1.25v to that pin instead of 3.3v... which is obviously not enough, but 1.3v could be just enough to cover the ldo's voltage drop (100mV sounds reasonable for 100-200mA consumption)

I can't really think of something else... yeah, it doesn't look nice.

Each of these boards also has an "AMS1117 3.3" regulator, next to the regulator marked AMS1117 ADJ. I tried shorting the 1200 ohm resistor of the latter to ground, and the voltage dropped to 1.25V, and the hard drive worked fine with it that way.

At least this construction doesn't look as bad as what I saw on a board where somebody blobbed solder on one copper pad and somehow pulled hot solder up and over to a pad about 3-4mm away -- solder snot jumper wire!

Panasonic TH-L42D25A checking the PSU output voltage
            by electron_jj
Hi Everyone, I am new to this forum. I have a Panasonic LED TV which doesnt turn on and is blinking 4 times repeatedly when I turn on the switch. The TV does not respond to the remote control so I had to turn on using the physical switch on the side of the TV. When I turn on the switch the 4 x blinking starts and repeat itself until I turn off the TV. There is a black screen. I turned off the light in the room to check the panel and I think there is no backlight as far as I can tell.

I have been inspecting and testing the capacitors and diodes in the power supply board to try to...

Trip light 2400 watt line conditioner bought used issue with low voltage oscillation going on between relays
            by sam_sam_sam
I found two capacitors on the board and one of the leads on one capacitor had bad soldering joint and the other joint connections not much better and there were several soldering joints that way to much flux around the joint redid several of them

The capacitors were a non brand that I did not recognize they got replaced and now it does not oscillating between relay but what concerns me a little bit is when the voltage is a little bit low the output voltage is around 130 volts and then drops down to 115 volts this happens around 105 to 108 volts if remember correctly

            Now...

3+1 Voltage Regulator for IMVP-7/VR12 CPUs

Compliant with IMVP-7/VR12, the ISL95831 provides a complete solution for microprocessor and graphic processor
core power supply. It provides two Voltage Regulators (VRs) with three integrated gate drivers. The first VR can be
configured as 3-, 2- or 1-phase VR while the second output is 1- phase VR, providing maximum flexibility. The two VRs share the

Acer a515-43 low battery charge voltage

            Hi

            Acer A515-43
            LA-H801P

Fail: Does not charge battery, has low voltaje on connector.

Laptop didn't want to turn on, only charge led blinked.

I found PQB5 (mosfet high battery charger) in short, voltaje in +12.6V_BATT was 19 v ...

I changed it, changed PQB6 too and now battery charger voltage is 4.4V but battery is 3 cell, 11.25v, then is very low to charging.

Laptop turns on without battery and works fine, but with battery turns on and turns off inmediately, I suspect battery bad but I don't know...
