You need to buy a book on them and read it 5 times before you buy! I would not have anything less than 100mhz. You need to be able to measure all aspects of the waveform for plasma. Also volts per division should be at least 100 v. A plasma waveform is around 300 v and my scope only goes up to 50v pere division. I can measure the waveform, but it`s hard sometimes.( probes) are a whole other book. You also need to be able to read timebase and volts my scope has cursers that give me a read out... nice for plasma.
It is nice to have a frequency counter too.
I am by no means an expert on scopes. I am still learning.
I paid 2000 bucks in 95 for mine so today it should be around 500 bucks with more features? and what about a digital scope?

I would pick up a cheap scope and learn on it then you will have a better idea of what you need and how much to spend. Good luck!

        Hi guys,

Thanks for the info ,the ones i have been looking at are 100mhz 2 channel and has 2 50v per division controls. I guess the only way to really learn is to get one and experiment a little I guess if i get one and get a little stuck i could post some pics and ask for some advice on here..

        Thanks once again

I was just looking at an l/g service manual ( plasma) and in diag it required 200mhz or more scope. I have a 100mhz and have been able to chase down waveforms, some are harder to trace and some are easy. I guess that would explain it. I am a little worried, I think more people should have spoke up here on this subject. I am afraid to look at scopes for plasma use :

          1) These will not be around long (even though I love them)

          2) I will end up buying yet another scope and spending too much money.

                  ...?...

no problems with your ebay link at all.
but there was a spam post (advertising) by some random chinese bot between cadiman's and your post. tried to report it to the forum mods but that didnt really work. its deleted now.

btw..little tip for shortening ebay URLs..

                  always worked for me..
for different countries, just replace the top level domain with the one of the country you want (.com/.ca/.it/.de/.co.uk/...)

The Tek 465b is still a useful scope for most of the things I've needed to use it on. It was the scope of choice by many repairmen years ago, along with an HP that I don't recall the model # of right now. You might find one for less outside the UK but I know the VAT is a factor then. At least that one has a probe so it can be tested out right away. Did you bid on it? If not there's plenty of them around so just keep watching for the deal you need.

Yahoo! groups have a user group called TekScopes for discussing classic Tektronix scopes that you might find interesting, especially when it comes to calibration issues or faultfinding.

You have to sign up before you can read the posts.

Need advice testing a samsung power supply board with scope
                            by repair-it
I am attempting to test a samsung power supply board to verify the pfc ic is working. I am powering up the board with my isolation transformer. The board turns on fine but when I attempt to connect the ground for the scope probe, it trips out the isolator. I was taught not to 'float my scope' so I am wondering if I should test without connecting the ground lead or would that be asking for trouble? Not sure how else to test, I don't have a portable scope. I could plug direct to mains power but that would bypass the safety factor.

How not to Damage an Oscilloscope
                            by Tarot Superstars
                            Hello.
I have jut got my first analogue oscilloscope. An Isotech 620 20MHz.

I want to learn how not to damage it, and I found instructions on the internet obscure.
They talk about ground, earth, floating ground, this, that....
But they don't actually say anything anything useful so far.

                            I want to know:
Don't connect exactly this to exactly there or it blows up.

For example, I am tracing a signal from a function generator in an audio amp, or testing for voltages in different parts of a circuit.
I want to know what not to connect...

Picked up a Tektronix type 422 oscilloscope locally for a few bucks last year.
It wouldnt power on at all so I stowed it away under my bench for later testing.
Today I remembered it was down there and pulled it out to see what was what.

I checked for continuity and everything checked out.
There was a burned smell and a resistor was replaced with a temporary replacement (see yellow box in picture).
The burned smell is very pungent/acidic and I am not familiar with these vintage electronics to know whether I am smelling the remains of the replaced resistor or...

                            Dynamco analogue oscilloscope
                            by Evets
I have recently acquired a Dynamco D7100 analogue oscilloscope without a user manual. As this is the first time I have owned or used an oscilloscope I would like to try and find an instruction book. The manufacturers no longer hold any information and a Google search only found one site but when I downloaded a 'service manual' all I got was gobbledegook. Any help would be gratefully appreciated or even pointers to a generic manual where I could learn more.
