flux helps the solder flow. it is inside the core of most solders. you can also get a tin of it to spread on wires and contacts where you want the solder to flow. I dont consider it necessary for recapping.
tinning is when you add a bit of solder to the tip of the soldering iron before you start soldering. it is recommended.

Flux is a state of change.
It holds the space time continume together, hence the Flux Capacitor, usually installed in a DeLarian.JimComment

lol i guess i should be doing the reading. i was 1/3 right.In soldering of metals, flux serves a threefold purpose: it removes oxidation from the surfaces to be soldered, it seals out air thus preventing further oxidation, and by facilitating amalgamation improves wetting characteristics of the liquid solder.Comment

Definitely clean it. Some water-washable fluxes are pretty conductive.PeteS in CA

i hate flux/paste. it will only flow the solder too much in my experiences..While we are on the subject of flux, what are ya'lls feelings towards liquid flux? I want to purchase any good flux remover But "chemistronic flux off es835b" is the most common flux remover in my nation..
Is it good to use chemistronic flux off es835b for flux remover?
Or I have to purchase "3m novec flux remover" which is quite expensive in my nation? -
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

Hi everyone,
I have an HP Elitebook 840 G5 that I am trying to get working again. I've removed the front bios chip (the 32mb one) and have run it through HP unlocker already. I've uploaded and verified the new bin, but am now experiencing an issue that has led me to believe I've been soldering the chip back to the motherboard incorrectly.
Essentially, after re-soldering the chip back into its place and reassembling the laptop, the charging light immediately flashes orange and white and then shifts to a solid white. The capslock and numlock lights blink seven times... -
I have an MSI Ventus 3X OC nVIDIA RTX 3070 with a damaged HDMI connector. The display is recognized but no display output due to the damaged right-side of the connector. I've got the board apart and the back of the HDMI connector is stamped Astron. The problem is that their site has 30 pages of HDMI type A connectors (http://astron.com.tw/eng/product.php?idt=1&pid=3&cid=1). Does anyone know how to determine which part numbers are compatible and then where to source them?
Also, I have some experience soldering but this will probably be the most challenging...
