ssd is just like a big cf-card.
i'v had a big cf-card fail being used as a boot-drive.
it just lost it's flash without warning.
just the controller i'd ing the make and size, then it freezes when you try to read or write.Comment

I had a problem very similar to that with a new Seagate drive. This was a few years back. A call to Seagate tech support, and they sent me a revised firmware for the drive which fixed the issues once applied from a PC that wasn't effected.Ludicrous gibs!

yeah its better to come up with some high rpm raid solution. there are some ways to extend the life of ssd's like disabling the paging file in windows if you have enough ram, but even at that the registry is written to on a constant basisCap Datasheet Depot: http://www.paullinebarger.net/DS/

When I found out that would kill SSD's real quick I settled on WD Raptor 36GB drives for that.

dead doesnt = bad cells.
bad cells = verify errors.
dead = failure in the buffers or the matrix decoding.
the buffers & decode circuits are hammered far more than the cell's
i'll add this, retention on flash seems like shit - and getting worse.
i used to get stuff 4-6 years old with corrupt or intermittant data in the flash,
now i'm seeing stuff only a year+ in age.
both fixed by a re-flash.
so the flash chips have higher leakage, or the higher density is resulting in a lower electron-per-cell count.Comment

Verify errors occur due to bad cells.
The buffers are caps [aka cells] too.
Dead = bad cells.

Oh wow.
As in the other thread I was trying to revive/re-bootstrap an old Apple IIe and wasn't successful reading or writing any disk. Both drives behave similarly.
Then I was wondering, what about my PC floppy drives? I have a HH 5¼" HD drive and a combo 5¼+3½ drive. I tried formatting the disk that wouldn't work in the Apple and it didn't work in the PC either!
Then I tried a HD 5.25 disk ... it won't even touch the disk either! Just like the Apple DD disk, "Not Ready!"
Weird. Seems the PC drive is having trouble clamping... -
I was trying to recover the data from a 4tb drive that was bought last september and it stopped working after a couple months. I bought a drive of the same model with the intention of using the pcb but after swapping the firmware, it still isn't recoverable or even usable. both pcb boards will work with the new drive as long as the firmware from the new drive is used. In disk management, the size of the drive doesn't show at all. is this corrupt firmware or worse?... -
Recently I was given for free a Sony RCD-W3 with the following symptoms, CD recorder drive reads CDs without any issues (haven't tested recording function yet because I don't intend to burn CDs on that machine) but the reader drive shows disc error after some seconds of it trying to read CD. Tried both CD-Rs and commercial audio CDs with same results.
First thing to do was to clean the lens but that didn't change anything. Googling the issue revealed that this is a common issue on several Sony CD recorder machines and the culprit is SMD electrolytic caps located on the PCB bellow...05-05-2024, 02:04 PM -
I recently got ahold of a bright green Chieftec/Chenming "Dragon" case (I've always liked these cases, especially in "oddball" colors) and decoded to throw together a period correct-ish build.
