So I shut off my computer last night to do some hardware changes and literally as soon as it shut off, the power supply dropped dead. I noticed the blue led on the motherboard (indicating 5VSB) went off when it shut off.
Ive had this in this computer running pretty much 24/7 since January 2010. I recently passed 50k hours on it (according to hard drive timers. those are probably not accurate).
So I checked and it was dead so I pulled it and cracked it open. I had remembered reading a review of this power supply where they noted the mini-board which supplies 5VSB. At first I...

Re: 3 wire cord but no ground
Once I took my old Dell laptop on a trip and forgot the power adapter, so I bought one of those "green" adapters from WalMart that purported to be compatible.
It made the computer HOT. Like AC voltage hot. Any metal components I would get a tingle off of like if I rested my hands on the palm rest. So I returned it and got another one. It did the same thing! I couldnt figure it out. It wasnt full 120VAC, obviously, but it was well enough to feel.

Ill cross post something I posted on another site.....

Re: DC to DC PSU project.
They make wide input PicoPSUs that can take up to 24 or 26VDC input. So all the outputs are getting filtered. Testing showed the best configuration was to use a wide input model with like a 19V supply for cleanest output.

Re: Responsibility of using wireless security
Its on the user. But, a lot of people dont know their security is weak or non-existent. I know my neighbors are running a WEP network. Essentially the same as open these days. I doubt they know that, or that WPA is better.
Personally, I have two SSIDs running. Colt45 is on the primary VLAN and is restricted with WPA2-Enterprise (802.1X), then I have Colt45-guest on a secondary VLAN and is restricted with WPA/WPA2-Personal. The key is two-thirds of the MD5 of a sentence.

Re: Acer AL1716 1 second to black
Thanks! I found the pdf of the SG series (I was surprised!) and it looks like the FMs are a bit better than the SGs but not too far out to make a big deal. So I ordered a set from digikey.

Acer AL1716 1 second to black
I got a free Acer AL1716b LCD Monitor which when I tested, briefly flashed an image on the screen then the backlight went out. I used a flashlight to verify it was still displaying, just the backlight has failed.
Got it opened up. Right off I can see I have a fattie Su'scon SG 25V 1000uf cap.
It has 5 caps of this series. I was going to replace them all.
1 25V 220uf
2 10V 1000uf
1 25V 470uf
1 25v 1000uf
What would be a suitable replacement?

Preventative recap of a CoolerMaster UCP?
I have a Cooler Master UCP 900W in my primary machine. I bought it literally a week or two prior to discovering this place and then JG.com. Or, I mightve avoided it.
Anyway, so heres my conundrum. It has OST and LTec electrolytics on the secondary side. I have 2.5ish years left on the warranty.
Im kinda sketchy about them. Should I can the warranty and recap it? Or, should I leave it alone and 'ride it out' through the warranty? Then hope it doesnt pull any funny business.

Re: Generic Laptop power brick
Ill crack the "lenovo" one I bought open when I get it. See if it looks authentic.

If I switch to discreet graphics and play a game, it gets very hot. I cant hold onto it.

Re: Generic Laptop power brick
I pulled the heatsink off to take some pictures. Unfortunately, the transformer appears to have overheated. You can see in my last picture the exposed copper of the output side of the trasformer along with some browning of the yellow tape along the bottom on that side.
It does not have a communication wire. Just the output. This thing looks very basic to me, but Im no expert....Last edited by Colt45ws; 02-28-2012, 08:52 PM.

Generic Laptop power brick
I bought a used Lenovo T500 about a month ago and it came with a generic ebay adapter. Something that always bugged me about it is the Lenovo power software shows it as a 90W adapter, when the label clearly shows it being rated 3.25A@20V.
Well, just recently, probably within the last day or so, it has developed a irritating ringing-like noise at low loads (sleep mode) which of course only myself can hear. Its very high pitched. If my hearing was more normal at high frequencies I dont think I would hear it.
Any ideas what that could be? I cracked the case out of curiosity and I came...

Re: Using transistor as a relay.
The light bulb is always on in run or acc. That is all the +12v feed is for. The switch is connected to the ground side of the bulb.

Re: Using transistor as a relay.
I also seen solid state relays as well, but they were not cheap. If I was going to do that, I might as well get regular relays..
Also, I just realized my FET circuit will not work. It looks like they would have to be fed source voltage at the gate in order to actually turn them 'off'.

Re: Using transistor as a relay.
Im liking the MOSFET idea! It looks like I need a P-Channel type.
Would something like this work?

I drew a schematic again. I tried to to a better job this time.

The light bulb is just a light bulb. I scaled it up because the screen shot is small so it lacks a lot of detail.Re: Using transistor as a relay.<br ...lot of detail.Re: Using transistor as a relay.
