Replacing dvd with second hard drive

I am using a Toshiba portege a600 and installed a hard drive tray and hdd now the computer is giving me a cd rom error and is not recognizing the drive immediately but will pick it up in time until i shut down then I have to wait for it to recognize it again. Is there something I need to change in the bios

Any help on what? I did check the bios but don't see anything there related to the Rom other than in the boot priority and that is set to boot from HDD

toshiba bioses are fucked, a lot of stuff is hidden or hard-coded.
i have had drive problems on several of them because of fixed ide settings

this seems to be the case here not many options to make changes in the bios so was there a solution?
My drive works fine once it gets recognized as long as I don't shut down the laptop which is weird? Windows 10 I thought support plug and play

windows gets drive info from the bios.
interestingly Linux does not - i used to run an old motherboard with a 137gig drivesize limit,
i used a 40gig bootdrive amd serveral big drives for storage that the bios wouldnt see!!

maybe you can mod the bios - it depends on the version.
there are some editors floating around.
                  go ask on bios-mods.com

Re: Replacing dvd with second hard drive

What is most puzzling about this is the fact that it do eventually recognize the drive but about 5 min after powering up which almost suggest that the bios recognizes it as a CD Rom on POST and Windows recognize it as a drive once up and running. I tried this same setup in a Acer Laptop and that worked without an issue at all no need to change any settings bios or otherwise??

Re: Replacing dvd with second hard drive

it's possible the drive is being picked up by a background task like smart checking.

**Need Help Unlocking BIOS and Hard Drive on Dell Precision 5820 Tower**
                        by federalhouse
                        Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

                        **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

                        **What I've Tried So Far:**

                        1. I accessed

PC case - Hard drive rails
                        by tmcw
A friend gave me his old PC case (with MB, and PSU), but no hard drive rails, he said he only used the 2.5" SSD spot inside, and used an external hard drive for data. He said that he'd have a look for the supplied rails, but I doubt he'll find them.

So I was wondering if case manufacturers used any type of standard 3.5" hard drive rail?

I'm used to the various Dell hard drive caddies or rails (and HP and Lenovo to a lesser extent), or el cheapo cases where you screw through the frame to fix the drive.

Now, the case is a CiT Gaming Case, and...

bug of the month: write caching setting for the hard drive in device manager
                        by ChaosLegionnaire
i recently bought a new wd re4 2tb with 2014 datecodes. when i got around to testing it tho in victoria hd tester, the write speed was very slow at 14 mb/s with a 256 sector transfer size. when i increased the transfer size to 1024 sectors, the write speed increased slightly to 44 mb/s. read speeds and sector verify speeds were fine and at normal speeds.

so i just ass-u-med the drive's poor performance was due to it being an advanced format drive and i was using it on winxp. when i tried cloning my system disk to this wd re4 2tb drive and writing to it in linux, the write speed...
