The boards that have a dual back up Bios which also then restores the original flash if it fails should be ok.

Won't do any good since it's operating system issue and not a bios issue.

The optional now recommended update adds UEFI support to windows 7, if the motherboard has UEFI secure boot enabled, on the next boot after the update had been applied to windows, the board won't recognize the windows installation since it never sign any keys for the uefi to store and compare to, it will refuse to boot the installation thinking it's malicious hence delivering a scary message.

      fuck microsoft and fuck windows.

just turn off the secureboot crap in the bios.

proves it works btw, m$ fucked with the bootloader, so the bios detected the change.
that or windows changed the EFI config - something that should be impossible - in which case we need that crap scrapped!
          (windows AND UEFI)

I'm not seeing that update and haven't installed it. Using 7 pro 64bit.

I turned update off months ago and haven't even looked at it. Still doesn't stop this thing from sitting for hours at 50% cpu usage and 60% ram used.

Re: heads up if you have an asus motherboard

I haven't done that yet but I have checked it with all kinds of different programs and nothing is found. I assumed it's that update checking with microsoft as everyone says. I figured telling it to not bother me about updates doesn't stop it from looking. On top of that I also notice security essentials isn't being updated like it used to. It complains about being out of date and will try to update for hours. Usually the next day microsoft will finally post one and it'll be happy for a couple days. They are doing all they can to force everybody to get 10 it looks like. Everyday it seems like they do something new to make 7 unusual. Sorry "unuseable".

i have background software consantly checking sites for updates - news & torrents mostly.
it does not use 50% cpu - it does not even register on the cpu monitor!
your system is doing A LOT. (of something!)

Re: heads up if you have an asus motherboard

Recently someone posted an article about 7 update program using 50% cpu and a lot of memory. !00% cpu with a single core. It started on mine just about the time they mentioned it. I went ahead and scanned it 7 ways from Sunday with nothing found. If I kill the internet it stops, but when it's doing it, it doesn't go on the internet. It doesn't run the hard drive either. Not sure what's going on. Others say it's just microsoft. I don't know.

Re: heads up if you have an asus motherboard

I had the problem with Windows 7 Update sitting there doing nothing while using one core flat out and finally found the solution - install KB3102810.

You might have to do it after a reboot (disconnect the internet), or it won't install due to the same problem.

That's fixed it on a dozen or so machines for me.

                        Off topic sorry :-)

Turning off updates is not a good thing. What hardware have you got ?
Did you scan in safe mode ? Quality malware can avoid detection fairly easily.

In order to avoid endless "checking for updates" and high CPU/RAM usage you should install the following KB BEFORE running Windows Update (manually or automatically):

There should be NO INTERNET CONNECTION during Windows boot.

Manually install Updates in the following order:

KB947821 (could skip downloading and installing this one)
KB3083710 (October update client for Windows 7, fixes problems)
KB3102810 (definitely INSTALL this before running Win Update)
KB3138612 (latest update client for Windows 7, fixes many problems)
KB3145739 (important security update that makes Windows Update stuck forever at checking for updates, installing it manually fixes the problem)

                              Reboot if required between steps

                              Reconnect Internet

Run Windows Update or enable automatic updates and let it run in the background and install updates.

                              off topic:

To avoid Windows 10 and the spyware stuff:

                              Untick the checkbox
"Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates"
                              in Windows Update Settings

DON'T INSTALL / UNINSTALL THE FOLLOWING UPDATES

It's a Sony Vaio from around 2006. 2 core processor with 1 gig of ram. It's slow but still works fine. I already had those updates installed. I shut it off in November when they pissed me off. I just installed 36 security updates that were waiting. Four failed and now they've disappeared. It's still running the drive and cpu and memory. It should settle down soon. I'll check for them old updates but the ones it installed were higher numbers, newer updates. I'm pretty sure I never installed them old ones or uninstalled them when I got mad in November. I use Firefox and never even open IE.

It says svchost is using a lot of cpu and memory which leads to windows operating system.
I uninstalled AVG months ago but it looks like it's still reserving memory too. By the way it says 3 gig of memory not 1.

svchost is not service, right click on it and find the service that uses it.

wtf about avg? once an Av program is gone it should be gone completely from the system. Only some spare files and some unused registry elements could be leftover but not consuming ram/cpu.

You are probably doing something wrong
