Re: HiSense 65H6510G no boot
I hate situations like this. It's the way of the world sadly.
Can you scope something on the ARM chip to at least see if it's alive (clock etc)?
Wish you luck.
Did you say earlier the 12v rail was at 9.4v?
Why is the 12v at 9.4v?

Re: inspiron n5110
Does this model have discrete graphics (ATI / nVidia?) If so, then bad GPU unfortunately.
Sorry

Re: Some True BCN History - Homecoming of a long lost friend!
I've also only seen half a dozen bad CPUs (which weren't killed by external factors) in 20 years.
Of those, 4 AMD (or Cyrix or blah) and 2 Intel. Both Intels worked, but would not run stable at their default clocks.
Intel fucking know how to fab a chip, they are amazing devices.

Re: Some True BCN History - Homecoming of a long lost friend!
Wow, great old rig, I never knew they made a case which could take two systems!
Had to look up Intel Prestonia as they didn't ring any bells, ah yeh, the old 2.4GHz 533FSB Xeons! Remember them well. Are those boards Serverworks chipsets?
I've got an old case from the same vintage which has been sitting around here for years, dual PSUs and I think 14 5.25" bays... I'll find a use for it one day.
That old shit from back then is so inefficient power-wise though, although there's...

Re: Another classic combo revived! Abit BP6
Hah, I had the same chips on the same board, also overclocked to 550 in 2000!
Seemed quite slow compared with my later Athlon XP 1500+ system though, I guess SMP has been optimised quite a lot since then!
Cool retro system, brings back memories.
Sold mine and bought a Peugeot 205 GTI.

Re: fuck HP - Inkjet printers reject low-budget cartridges
This sort of crap, especially laptop batteries, is SUCH a pain in the ass for on-site techs like me also... It seems the manufacturers only think themselves and end users exist in the world. Sort of like the way Microshite has always done things. Most of my customers couldn't even replace a laptop battery, some can't replace a print cartridge properly and NONE could reinstall Windows with any chance of it working at all / properly.
Grr, big companies piss me off.
Thanks stj for the heads up!

Re: printer sent a bunch of e-mails!
Sorry but I had to laugh at the stuff your printer did with your email account! Wonder what the firmware designers were thinking to make it do that.
Yeah HP Laserjet 4 / 5s were really solid, I regret getting rid of mine. I use a 1010 now, it's 13 years old and well, it works - on its second toner cartridge, no heavy use here.

How's it going now? Still ok?

Re: Monitor goes black
Depends on what pins get disconnected on the BGA when it heats up... I've had some odd behaviour from nVida chips when they do that... including losing the R / B signal but G is ok etc.

Re: Some More Retro PC Uniqueness
I remeber wanting a Tyan Tomcat board, but it was over 2000 uk pounds, nevermind the cpus etc.... but that was a long time ago! Great that you have one though - I'd have a hard time finding a use for that system now. What are you going to do with it?

Re: heads up if you have an asus motherboard
What does Revo do that the normal uninstall (which usually uses an msi script) doesn't?

I expect your graphics card is buggered, as we say in the UK. Could you try it in another system or try another card in your system?

Re: heads up if you have an asus motherboard
Yeah that 2006 Sony (Original Centrino I guess) could be made to run pretty good... Ditch any cleaners and AVG etc and find a nice tight anti-virus (I'll leave that up to you, I don't use it) and stick 3GB in that sucker (I expect that's the max for that chipset) and it'll be great. My mum has a similar laptop (HP DV2000) that is still used daily and it's usably fast.

Re: heads up if you have an asus motherboard
Can't you upgrade the RAM? Seriously, 1GB sucks on almost any modern OS. You could also try re-installing the KBwhatever I and someone else posted earlier. It's worked for me and quite a few customers having svchost (if you use process explorer it's the update service), doing exactly what you've described.Last edited by dan8139; 05-07-2016, 03:47 PM.

Re: heads up if you have an asus motherboard
I had the problem with Windows 7 Update sitting there doing nothing while using one core flat out and finally found the solution - install KB3102810.
You might have to do it after a reboot (disconnect the internet), or it won't install due to the same problem.
That's fixed it on a dozen or so machines for me.
Off topic sorry :-)

Balls, I've had some of this bollox as well.... These things are a pain to fix. But like you, I'd be determined.
