    Not again....

I have a Toshiba P25-S5093 laptop as some of you may know. This is one of the most expensive things that I own. It was a gift from my really awesome cousin after she didn't want to fix it up and purchased a new lappy. I was in USA at the time so I knew it was either end up in a closet for many years after she got a new laptop so I decided to give it a new home down south in Australia.
But still.... I don't want to break anything while fixing this issue.
Lately I've been having a problem with the optical drive. It had this issue a while ago but the problem disappeared for some months.
The optical drive will read DVDs but not CDs. A few months ago, it would read both CDs and DVDs and could even burn both types of media. Now it only reads CDs. I don't know what I should do, but is this repairable or do I have to buy a new optical drive?. A new optical drive is going to cost me $200 or more which is something I don't really favour.
Do i need to clean the reading lens or something? I want to fix this drive without having to physically take everything apart and then struggle to put it back together again.
Earlier this year, I had to take the screen bezel off and tighten/ smoothen the hinges so now that's one issue solved.

    Thanks.

I had the same issue with an old Pioneer drive into an Acer 1351 portable: at first it read every disc, then it wasn't able to burn dvds; in a few months it couldn't even burn reliabily cds or read (re)writable dvd. Eventually it managed to read only industrial cds (not writable nor rewritable media) and, since cleaning the lens didn't help, I figured out the laser got exausted or damaged.
Buy a cd cleaning disc (they're cheap, about 7-8 euro [$10-12]) and let it spin; if cleaning doesn't solve the issue, then you have to stand with it (as the portable owner did, since it uses pen drives for data exchange) or buy a new drive.

      chances are it's irreparable.

dirty lens probably wouldn't read anything.

The CD and DVD functions use different lasers and it's not at all unusual for one to go out and the other is still fine.

Damn, if that's the case then I have to spend $200 on a new drive. Is there some way I can burn a CD into a DVD so that I can use it with this laptop?

          Thanks.

If it's an ISO file then you can extract the files using winRAR and burn them to a blank DVD. If it's a bootable CD then there are tools available online to make a bootable image using the extracted files, I know I've used them before but I can't recall where I got them...

Also found this on eBay, much less than $200:

High chances that it's something wrong in the drive's hardware but if Toshiba offers firmware downloads you could always try downloading new firmware for the drive.
