    Lighthing hit me!

I was using a laptop on a raining day, and it got fired!
Lightning struck, i got a shock, but temporarily without any fatel incidence.

    Compaq presario CQ61 aka insyde

but my laptop was affected, it was plugged in when i was using it.
when i tried to boot some days later, i got an error message

    Code:
Serial Number: (empty- nothing is shown)
    UUID Number is 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
    Product Configuration ID: 00000000000000000
    Factory installed OS: non-vista
presently, the laptop boots up,but stops at the win7 logo with the progressbar. I tried to format, still stops there, i thought of doing a bios update, but need your imputes

    Re: Lighthing hit me!

That's not much to go on.

I'm surprised that it's still working.

Try a linux distro see if you can boot into ubuntu or linux mint live cd, if you can then try to to install it, if it fails then something is screwy. Also run memtest86+ usually comes on linux live cds as well.

Another thing you can do is try d-ban and wipe the drive good, then attempt to reinstall windows. Sometime bad MBR, boot sectors, broken partitions and magnetic errors causes the drive to get screwed up so bad that nothing can install or tries to install but fails because of it.

It's very difficult to repair laptop motherboards, especially if they use BGA chips that need replacing.

BGA... is my least favourite. Partially due to the fact I don't own a BGA reworking station.

if you really wanna take out a chip and replace or reball you can make you`re own setup.
it depends on how much you wanna do that thing.
home made rework station its now a new thing

I actually may be interested in that. I have a 3dfx voodoo 4500 which I want to replace the VSA chip with another one as I accidentally broke it while removing the heatsink.

            But that's off topic.

I have a Gigabyte G41 motherboard that was hit by lightning last year. When I got my hands on it, it wouldn't POST. I fixed it by removing the Ethernet controller IC (which was visibly blown out) with my hot air gun. Around here, lightning hits though the power are extremely rare. They almost always come through the phone line, and take out the ADSL modem and Ethernet controller IC

I remember trying to fix a Dell PC which was hit by lightning.
It would still turn on and display something like "keyboard error press any key".
Both USB and PS/2 ports were totally dead.

with the underground cable and electrical system here that not very common. but the construction crew here are idiots and end up digging into the power lines and cable lines so outages are common.

You need to wipe the HDD then put in the Windows 7 DVD.

Laptop HDDs seem to get bitrot often!

Dell Inspiron 3480 All in One corrupt Bios issue: reaches Dell logo and stops
                        by computerbacon79
The Dell Inspiron 3480 I own (the all in one, not the laptop) is not wanting to turn on at all. It goes right to a dell logo, but it stays there forever with no other information on the screen. Holding the automatic Bios repair key combo (ctrl+esc) that should let it read a recovery file off a USB drive gets stuck on a black screen and does nothing. No amount of resetting anything so far has worked, and Dell's own support downloads have not really helped. Ive tried another BIN file I found online using my CH341A, and this got me slightly more, that time it displayed a loading bar that never moved...

Asus P2520L starts and stops ok but no display

                        Model Asus P2520L
                        MB P552LA_LJ Rev 2.1 with soldered I3 5010U processor

The laptop charges battery and seem to react to power on, power off, reset regularly, but nothing appears on screen or HDMI or VGA monitor.
Same behaviour when running on battery only, on mains only or on both.
Battery charges fine. RTC battery ok at 3.025V.
When powered on the power on led lits, after a short while the HDD led flashes, but no video. All voltages seem present. ALL_SYSTEM_PWRGD is present, BUFF_PLT_RST# goes high. CPU warms up and fan starts and stop from time to time....

Lenovo A485/T480 USB stops working when USB2.0 is plugged.
                        by someonenotyou
                        Hi.

I have 2 Lenovo laptops (A485 and T480) with identical USB problem.
When I plug in a USB 3.x device (USB storage), the USB ports are working normal.
But as soon I plug in USB 2.0 device (mouse, USB storage), all the USB ports stop working. Even if I plug in USB 3.x device.

The only way to get USB working again is disconnect battery and reset BIOS.

                        Has anyone had anything similar?
I have not yet tried another BIOS, but would that be the problem with USB?

                        Thank you.

s340-15IWL Laptop stops charging until AC and battery are disconnected
                        by mrkmpn
I have a Lenovo IdePad s340-15IWL that will charge fine to 100%, but if you let the battery drain to around 50% (give or take) and plug the AC adapter back in, it will no longer charge and the only way to resolve the issue is to disconnect the AC adapter, disconnect the battery, plug the battery back in, and then the AC adapter, and then it will once again charge the battery back to 100%.

If you unplug the AC adapter and let it drain down a little and plug it back in, charging still works fine. I'm not 100% sure where the cutoff is where it stops working, but I think it's down...
