    Even Linux can get infected...

Anyway, somewhat back on topic, I'm about to order this:
    http://www.amazon.com/6600mAh-Batter...7081926&sr=8-3
    is that a good choice?

Any AV will slow your computer down if you let it do real time scanning. Just scan suspicious files. Malwarebytes is great at this and you can just disable the service.

The best protection is a real time firewall that asks if you want a program's request to go through or not. You can also audit running processes and see what they are. Then when you see a new one that looks fishy....

Well I'm not discouraging it 100% - in fact not even close. There are cases where it is helpful to me - for example, when I get a really infected PC, usually I first let an anti-virus of some sort clean up the majority of the viruses, then I check everything myself.

My gripe with AV software is that it's just too intrusive - sometimes even more than viruses themselves. Your subscription is about to expire! Renew NOW! or Try our new security suit and become a millionaire by saving so much money! - yeah right.

And I would have to agree with WLG that I too have yet to see an AV that doesn't noticeably drag down a computer. It's not just that either... try running your laptop on batteries and then doing lots of folder-browsing or writing lots of files with and without AV. Please tell me if you don't notice a difference.

For new laptops, I can squeeze out at least 20 minutes of extra battery life. And for this one Acer netbook I was setting up for someone, the AV - McCrapAFee - made such a difference that the run time on batteries was cut in half from the advertised 8 hours. Not only that, but the mouse would stutter every once in a while due to McCrapAFee wasting CPU cycles. That thing is a waste of memory too - 200 to 400 MB depending on... I have no idea really. Its memory usage is all over the place. We have some corporate edition of that at work, and it's doing the same thing as well - every day. It really is crap.

I've tried other AVs as well, but they all hog at least one or more resources pretty badly. AVG takes forever to open folders with lots of EXE files, as does Avast!
And that's pretty much why I don't like to use AV software in the long run.

Now software like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware I find very useful. In fact, I have it on every computer I own or set up. Same with Spyware Blaster.

Anyways, sorry for completely derailing this thread.

The difference in performance that Resident Shield makes is surprisingly noticeable. And I think you'd have to be rather determined to get a virus every month.

Panasonic Toughbook CF-33 mk1 BIOS repair
                        by aa10aa10
                        Good day,

I have tried to remove BIOS supervisor password from Panasonic Toughbook CF-33 mk1. Model number CF-33AENABTG, unfortunately I don't have any other info.

I read the BIOS using afuwin, edited it and tried to flash new edited BIOS using afuwin. Unsuccessfully. Afuwin showed "Error: Problem erasing flash." starting with 0x00040000 and stoped. Then I tried many other options to flash BIOS from Windows without any luck. Finally i rebooted the device - and no post. Afterwards I have read the corrupted bios chip (MX25L12873F) using EZP2010 programmer....

Panasonic FZ-55 Toughbook main board schematic request
                        by David Smedley
I've been working on this awful project with a Panasonic FZ-55, basically I'm trying to intercept the eDP signal from the main board, and replace it with my own eDP signal connected from an lcd driver. The problem is, for some reason the 30 pin ribbon pinout is really unusual and not playing nice with my LCD controller. Long story short, I managed to fuck up my board and pull off some pads on the eDP out port, I'm hoping to find either another eDP out source somewhere else on the laptop, or figure out this goddamn pin layout so I can just replace the whole native display complex with my controller...
