They don't have the same pinout on the ATX connector. Best case is the Dell supply just wouldn't work. Worst case... it would fry your board. Go with the Sparkle.

Re: PSU for a PIII Server, Sparkle or Dell psu?

proprietary means something not common specification. basically will only work with that company's hardware.

sparkle is a good psu but since you are buying second hand, check inside to see if the caps are looking ok, check the fan is working ok, if not replace, clean the dust inside.

what is it gonna be serving? if it is company stuff i would say new psu only.

how many hdds will you have?

noise killer means fan is either slow or psu changes fan speed with temperature. i usually find powerful fan for server psu

Sparkle's noise killer PSUs have temperature control fan.

                    Yeah , it is for a Company, for a light server (pIII) single cpu , 512mb , 40gb ....

Well , i dont know , better buy a new shitty 50000000000000W PSU with 2 fans and 199W true power.

NO, don't buy the shit high-watt PSU. Buy a good one and it will give you years of reliable service. I recommend to buy a new Fortron / Sparkle PSU if available.

Re: PSU for a PIII Server, Sparkle or Dell psu?

                        some dell psu's are ok.
                        gotta watch the pinout though.
if i get one of the nonstandard pinouts i pull out the old molex tool and change it or a replacement to suit.
those old fortron/sparkle are good once you get rid of the fuhjjyyu caps.
got a bunch of stuff from huffy when they closed their springboro warehouse and otherwise junk pc's had some fortron units in them which i pulled for rehab/resale.
funny to be digging through junk to get a decent psu.
since you said p3 watch those dell units as many dont have -5 and older boards with isa need it.

Agreed, not all DELL PSU's are gimped to DELL specs...There are solutions out there to get around the proprietary supplies though...

i have worked with those kinda companies before but no more. if you need the work then ok. just make sure they have good data backup solution so you dont put yourself in a bad position in the future (even some program mirroring the server data directories daily to another computer if there is no budget and you are comfortable to install the server again quickly after hdd fail etc). and yeah servers should be on a UPS if they can afford.

Proprietary may mean special pin-out. Or it may mean a slightly different current rating for one or more of the outputs. Or it may mean more or fewer or different length HDD cables. Or the +5V Stby O/P current rating may be non-standard. As far as I know, Dell doesn't make P/Ss. I think their main vendors are Delta and Lite On. If you find out which and the vendor's model #, you may be able to contact their tech support people and find out what makes the model non-standard.

As a side note, beware of "ATX" P/Ss made for Apple. Not only do they not have a -5V O/P, but Apple used that pin for an extra +3.3V wire.

Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

Speaking of the -5V rail... is the ISA bus the only thing that uses it? My KT7-RAID board has an ISA slot, but I just have a modem in there which doesn't use the -5V rail. I'm wondering if there's anything else that might use it.

                                    Some old soundcards use -5v...

There was even a mobo manufacturer that built a recent board on which -5v was required for the onboard sound; even though it's not in the ATX spec anymore...

I think the serial bus on many computers uses -5v even though it should be -12v according to the specs...

                                        I've just ordered a SPI-300HP Sparkle 300W , the problem is that 5VSB is rated at 0,1 A MAX and motherboards (socket 370) needs 0,3 A

Will be some problem with the stand by function ?
