Re: Abit KT7-RAID board showing symptoms
Hey guys!
I filed a claim with the abitsettlement.com site to reimburse me for Chris's repairs on my board, and today I received a check for the full cost of repairs and shipping!
Unfortunately the deadline for filing a claim is over now, but I thought I'd let you guys know that they actually reimbursed me for repairs done by a third party.
Thanks Chris!

Reason the small caps don't need to be replaced?
What was the reasoning for why the small caps don't need to be replaced? Will even the 100uf "Junkcon" caps stay good for a long time?

Need help with the pc speaker
I'm hoping you electronics gurus can help me out here...
I took off the front panels on my Antec case earlier today so that I could clean up all the dust that had collected in there over the years. When I took off the bottom panel, one pair of wires broke off the PC Speaker, which was embedded in the panel.
The two wires are attached to a little plate, which you can see at the bottom of the picture. They must have just glued the plate onto the back of the speaker, and looking at the patterns of glue on the plate and the speaker, I figured out how the plate should...

Will the bad caps go bad even if unused?
Let's say I buy a new component that has caps from known badcap manufacturers, and I don't use it at all for 3 years. Will the caps in that component still be "new" after 3 years of no use, or could they still turn bad?
-
When did they first start producing "bad caps"?
When did cap manufacturers first start using the electrolyte that has caused so many caps to fail prematurely?
Seems like a lot of equipment from 2000 (and later) has suffered from bad caps, so were the first bad caps produced in 2000? Would it be safe to say that any component manufactured in 1999 or earlier will not have any of these bad caps?

Re: How long will my power supply last?
When did you first get those PSUs? Sounds like they may have been manufactured before the "bad cap" problem came into existence.

Can you determine the cap manufacturer by the color?
I just opened up a new FSP400-60PFN power supply to check what kind of caps it has. I noticed that the black ones with gray print were CapXon and the greenish ones with a brownish vertical stripe and print were Teapo. There were also some black ones with a light blue vertical stripe and print, but I couldn't tell what brand those were. Any idea what brand those caps are?

How long will my power supply last?
I just got a new Fortron FSP400-60PFN power supply. I opened it up (there was no sticker saying that I'd void the warranty) and checked to see what kind of caps it has. I saw a few CapXon, a few Teapo, and some others but I couldn't tell what brand they were (too many wires and other things in the way).
I notice both CapXon and Teapo are on the bad cap manufacturers list. How long should I expect this PSU to last?
I'm thinking it might be a good idea to buy another FSP400-60PFN as a backup. I have an Athlon Tbird system that primarily draws power on the 5v rail,...Last edited by incapacitance; 02-04-2006, 03:41 PM.

What software to use for stress/burn-in testing?
What software do you guys use for burn-in and stress testing? Just want to make sure my CPU and RAM are working OK. I run Windows, BTW.

Chipped Athlon CPU: is it risky?
I just got an Athlon Tbird from ebay, and I was disappointed to see that the lower right corner of the die is chipped. I've read reports from people who have used chipped CPUs that usually worked but occasionally exhibited problems. I'd like a CPU that works 100% of the time, not 99% of the time. I haven't tried to install it yet (waiting to get back my board). Would you guys be comfortable running it in your system? I'm thinking about asking the seller for a refund. Here's a picture of it:...Last edited by incapacitance; 01-31-2006, 04:12 AM.

Re: Buying a Sparkle SPI ATX-400PN
What about the Fortron FSP400-60PFN? Could this be a higher-end unit that uses good caps?...

Antec TruePower 2.0 series?
I found a few old posts that suggest that some Antec TruePowers may have suffered from bad caps. But I see that Antec has a newer TruePower 2.0 line of PSUs. Anyone know if those might have bad caps?

Re: Caps in Antec PSU
Say it ain't so about the TruePowers... I'm thinking about getting a 430.

Re: Seasonic S12 430W Internal Pictures
I just called Seasonic, and the guy I spoke to said that all of the capacitors they use are made in Japan. I tried to ask him about how people had opened up some of the S12s and found caps from known bad manufacturers, but I don't think he understood that question. He reiterated that they only use Japanese capacitors in their power supplies now.
Now let me make sure I've got this straight... none of the bad cap manufacturers are Japanese, right?

Re: Seasonic S12 430W Internal Pictures
Looks like it is just poor English... here is a press release introducing that line of power supplies:
http://www.seasonic.com/new/twevent20050510.htm
It says "Moreover, the new S12 employs an improved double ball bearing 120mm cooling fan and higher quality aluminum electrolytic capacitors for even greater reliability and stable performance."Re: Seasonic S12 430W Internal Pictu...h... here is a...

Re: computer freezing
I will be getting a 3ware true hardware RAID card.
KT7-RAID, but almost the same thing. (I'm getting the 3ware card because I heard it's much better than the built-in Highpoint controller)
Well I do have a 5-year old Antec PP-303X (300 watt) power supply. I opened it up recently and didn't notice any bulging caps. But I did discover that my hard drive has some bad sectors on it, and I've read that a bad power supply can cause that. So I don't know if the Antec may have done something to my hard drive or...Last edited by incapacitance; 01-21-2006, 03:03 PM.

Re: computer freezing
Really? I checked those online power supply calculators... I currently have a 300W Antec PSU, but am planning on adding a RAID controller and another ATA drive, and those calculators are saying that I'll be right around that 300 watt limit. And I may want to add more stuff in the future, which is why I want to upgrade to a 400W model.
I found this in a thread on Anandtech:
Is this true about Newegg? Anyone know where I can buy the later versions of the Seasonics?...
