    P5P800...dead

My friend handed me his computer today for fixing. The problem was that it would turn on, but no beeps or display whatsoever. The computer worked fine in his shop throughout the last two years or so. Then when he transported it home for the kids to use and tried to boot it up, it didn't display anything on the screen. I've stripped the board out of the case and bench boarded it with only a CPU (S775, Pentium 4 640, 3.2GHz) and a stick of RAM (Veritech 512MB DDR400)... Still no-go.

Even with my own RAM and AGP graphics card, it still doesn't want to boot. I am currently using a 300W Delta electronics PSU to power the parts on my work bench, but still no-go.

The PSU in the computer's case is a Deer branded unit. ewwww. I don't know if it fried the board or not, but I doubt it cause the south-bridge isn't burning hot as with many other boards killed with crappy PSUs.

    What's wrong here guys?

Try booting it with no memory installed. Does it beep then? (Make sure a PC speaker is hooked up, if one is not soldered on the board.) If it doesn't beep with no memory installed, the bios isn't working. Try reseating the bios chip if it's socketed.

And did you plug in the 4-pin CPU power connector? I've forgotten to plug that thing in more times than I can count, and I never bother to check that as it seems too simple to be the problem.

Asus boards have voice messages instead of beeps. Remember to have the speakers on and connected to the soundcard.

KZG are notorious for failing without bloating. You could try replacing all the KZG caps. Personally, I've found that asus are the ones that just die on me while the gigabyte boards last forever.

i gave up in the end and built a new system for my friend. i found the cause in the end... it was the cheapo DEER PSU that killed it... bad caps on the 5V standby line.

new system is an amd 965 phenom x4 with an asus m4a88td-evo-usb3 motherboard... along with a new thermaltake litepower 430w psu.

                              I have P5L-MX, P5NE-SLI, P5PE-VM and another 945 based ASUS.
                              None of them have 'voices'.

Some boards may have them, but there are lots that don't.

Well either if board is dead or not, I'm not planning to use it since it's quite old and if it was the caps, i can't see a point in spending money on a sinking ship.

Plus I haven't got the time these days to recap boards since I'm overly busy with university work and other work on top of that.

I have 2 P4P800-E's kicking around here somewhere with voice. I think I disabled it on one though because the board wouldn't detect the aftermarket cpu cooler. The Mrs used to freak out every time she heard "CPU fan failed", so for sanity's sake (hers and mine) I turned it off in bios.
