    Re: Unknown System Failure

    ~ Guessing ~
Maybe AFU HDD was sending noise [ripple/EMI] back into the power rails and that toasted the RAM and Video card.
Or, maybe some MOSFET or similar on the vid card let go hard and set a voltage spike into the rails.
    Or possibly both...

Kind of strange everything shit itself at once.

unless the earth has way above or below line voltage for a second and because the psu case is connected to the chassis and the chassis to the boards - the other voltages looked way out for a second!

Solid amber power light is usually synonymous with 'fubar'

Maybe worth popping open the PSU just to check it's all OK in there... I know it's working now, but it still could be having issues.

          Re: Unknown System Failure

I did inspect the PSU as well as every cap on the mobo. Everything looked as it should. The worst thing I found was some cooked thermal paste around the cpu. The cpu works so I guess it isn't toast as of yet. I will be looking for another 2.4 P4 cpu to replace it with. This thing has the 533mhz FSB. I think it will also support up to a 2.6 P4 non HT cpu. A better solution for its cpu cooling needs to be found too. I also stuck another HD in this thing and reinstalled Xp thinking that I had put my newer 80 gig WD in it. AS it turns out it was and older 30 gig WD. Now I get to do it all over again. I guess I do this while I drink some hurricane beers here this friday night.

Well I think this mobo tops out at 2.6mhz. It may not even see a 2.8 or it may just run it as a 2.6mhz.

I'm telling you Kc it did send me mental! Now from what I have learned so far is that the fastest 533FSB Non HT cpu that came in this 4550 was a P4 3.06mhz, 533FSB chip. My unit has the Norwood core P4 2.4, 533FSB chip. If it is infact a plug and play upgrade and I can find one of these chips real cheap I'll try it. Hope you are feeling well today... Oh the old PIII ended up in the parts bin. I remember it being and ok computer but never as nice as the exact same 1gig cpu running on and Abit VL-6. The Dell PIII can't even keep up with this sick 2.4 P4.

                        Re: Unknown System Failure

The Dimension 4550 has an Intel 845PE chipset - supports hyperthreading.
It is limited to CPUs with a max of 512k cache.

There should be a setting in the BIOS to turn hyperthreading off if you don't want it.
                        .

This list is for an Intel board but it supports the same CPUs your does.
                        http://www.intel.com/support/motherb.../CS-020051.htm

You might find a 2.8Ghz costs a lot less than a 3.06 Ghz because the 3.06 is the max CPU for a lot of boards. - That's how it used to be anyway, but I haven't looked at [shopped for] those in a long time.

                          More info found...

                          - The chipset supports hyperthreading.
                          - You are limited to 400 or 533 FSB.
                          - You are limited to P4 CPU's with 512k cache because of the chipset.

Of those CPUs with 400/533 FSB and 512k cache the only ones with hyperthreading are the 3.06GHz/533FSB with one of the following sspecs:
                          SL6S5, SL6SM, SL6QC, SL6PG, SL6JJ, SL6K7

Now all I need do is find one of these rare chips that you listed and then enable hyperthreading in my bios. The new cpu should then be listed twice! This Pimp is so happy now he is going to have a beer sometime today to go with this great news! This is after I pick up my friend when they let him out of the hospital today. This is also after I go to the boneyard to grab to brand new rotors off a 99 suzuki sedan. Why put all brand new brakes on a car only to junk it? At $12.50 each I can't pass them up! I'm not hijacking this thread. Its still about a 4550 Dell system failure and a CPU upgrade. Have not been taking many of these of late. They are too strong.

That's one where you'll have to keep checking for a good deal.
It's the max [best possible] for a LOT of systems and that drives the price up.

Make sure it says all of 3.06GHz 512k 533FSB and lists one of the correct sspec numbers.

If it doesn't look right then ask the seller because there are lots of typos and mistakes in CPU ads.

wa wa wa...I want my 3.06 hyper threading thing right now! Found one on a blind call. The lady wanted $50 for it. Thats way too much in my book. Saw one on Fleabay for $25 "Buy It Now" Somehow I know I'll mess up on the specs and buy the wrong one. Then again I will be safe as long as a get one of the models that PCBONEZ posted.

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.
