    Oh, be patient and wait for a cheap one.
    Not 100% sure, but I don't think the improvement will be -that- huge.

    Not 100% sure because I kind'a skipped that one.
    I went from 2.4Ghz/512k like you have straight to the 1M cache Prescotts without any steps in between.

    I did check the 'P4 drawer' just in case, but no joy on a 3.06/512k HT.

      Do Not Buy from that seller. I bought some pc parts and a pc case from him about 2 years ago. He did not pack them well, the case was busted in shipping ( used just a handfull of styrofoam peanuts and a old soap box) loose parts inside case broke. IDIOT!

        Yes Sir PC I'll do as you say. I have to..LOL After I get done doing this brake job on the wifes car I'll be more broke than broke anyway. Got to do it. The front rotors are about .200 under and the worst pad is about .064 thick or less. I'll be doing it today if those "brand new" rotors are still on that junked car at the boneyard.

            Well the system lasted a few days only to end up with a wrecked windows install on the wd 80gig. I updated my mouse as well as my adware scanner back to back. Both updates failed for some reason. On the next boot none of the screen icons and programs were associated with anything. I'm sure this sick install could be fixed but I don't know how. After reconnecting the Maxtor 30gig with Xp on it the PC has been running fine. I'll reprogram the 80gig tomorrow and be done with it. Screw ups like this should happen at the beginning of reprograming not at the end. Dang it!

              Well I reprogramed it yesterday. It booted this morning and did a BSD with a mini memory dump. Rebooted and it is working fine again. Something is up but I don't know what. Guess I'll run the WD hard drive diags and memtest 86 and see what I can find.

                i test first with smartudm on the last xp 22 disk first.iirc i sent you one last time we did some swapping.its on the hirens boot cd.
                the lines to pay the most attention to are reallocated sectors and current pending.
                on the last screen reallocated will be displayed.
                a few are tolerable unless there are a bunch in current pending.hundreds or thousands means you own a paperweight!

                  I'll have to find that and run it. I did run the WD diags and Memtest86 and came up clean.

                      I did two passes with memtest86 as a quick test. I will let it sit here and cook on memtest86 later tonight for a few hours. As for a replacement hard drive if needed I did find my newest ATA133 40gig WD drive stashed in my cabinet. I have a programed Maxtor already in the Dell case but that drive slows the system down. I don't even think its ATA100. The thing just may be ATA66. I don't remember owning or buying any Maxtors in years so it must be something I stock piled when parting out some old PC.

                        I have a friggin virus on this thing again! Will be reprograming soon because of it. I think that this virus came from C-Net when I downloaded ether Adobe or Java. I have these programs on disk too so I'll use them for the install this time. I'm also going to switch out the ATA133 80 gig for my ATA133 40 gig. I just don't need 80 gigs of space.

                          You'll get viruses through your older versions of Flash and Java because they're not up to date and have security holes in them which *are* being exploited. You MUST keep Flash and Java up to date.

                          Why did you go to CNet for Flash and Java? Get it straight from the source, you know the installation packages won't have been interfered, with and Adobe and Oracle don't run nasty banner ads on their websites which contain exploits for the above.

                          Also, try and stay away from IE, Firefox is a little safer.
