Re: nice!
So AMD eliminated SIMD (3dNow) and have deprecated it with their version of SSE.
Unfortunately, Intel won't license SSE4.x to AMD, so AMD has taken to suing Intel and crying foul.
Don't get me wrong... I despise Intel, even a little more than I despise AMD, but until AMD gets the later SSE4 iterations, their chips will fall behind Intel's.Comment

Re: nice!
So what affect will that have on programmers? As far as I can tell, their options are:
1. Write it Intel only with SSE4.
2. Write it twice, once for AMD and once for Intel.
3. Write it to be compatible with both, and sacrifice performance.
Which one do they usually pick?A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.Comment

Re: nice!
They usually pick number 1, because they like to use Intel's compilers.
As part of their settlement Intel has to make their compilers take advantage of SSE4a, but that's like telling two children to play nice together.Comment

Re: nice!
No, they're not programming games (And I am talking exclusively of games or video-related apps) with GCC. They're using Windows platform tools which have very mature SSE4.x code. Video encoding and graphics animation, Intel blows AMD away.
Speaking of integer... Even the K6-2 was faster than the pentium 2 in integer apps.Comment

lol bollard runner fails.... man. seeing one live is just.... weird. can't really describe it.Comment

Re: nice!
i used to see bollard incidents every day.
there are a pair near me set as a width restriction to slow trafic & block trucks.
it's funny, people with big cars just smoke through, but people with toys like civic's and escorts etc go real slow like they think the cars bigger than it is.
anyway, the fun is when you get the van drivers from the courior company's.
they smoke through these things and forget the wing mirrors stick out about a foot each side - boom!
i swear the ground is covered in smashed plastic & bits of mirror every time i go past!Comment

by vf faHi, so i guess I´ll have to make a new topic here, as i browsed through hundreds of other threads but couldn't find a solution to my problem yet.
I got a EIZO CX270 from a friend. He said it doesn't work anymore and wont display any signal or take any OSD inputs. Well, as an aspiring photographer I couldn't say no, could I? Thought it was an easy game, replace a bad cap and have a working monitor. But nooope, it wasn't supposed to be this easy.
So let me start with the problem description. I'll try my best not to skip anything so this might get rather long.

by jm1234Hi,
I'm trying to guess what component got burnt on the control board for my Nice garage door motor Nice SNA4/A. You can see it in front of the 2 capacitors. The component is connected across the 36V rectified input wires, maybe it was some kind of protection device?
All the pictures I could find were of the whole product, so enclosed in the plastic box, eg. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/123998876212
Any help appreciated.

by TopcatIt's been a LOOOONG time since I've done one of these.... I've had the case for years, its just been sitting in my office with crap stacked on top of it. It has a Micronics 486 motherboard in it with a DX4-100 CPU.... I was never a 486 enthusiast, I had no intentions of doing a build with it....I only kept it for the case....which someone dropped off for recycling years ago.
Anyway, I recently stumbled upon a Supermicro P6DKF AT motherboard and tested it in 'the oven'. I remember seeing one (or one similar) back in the 90's before eATX was a twinkle in anyone's eyes and wondering...-

by valvashonWhile it won't be worth it at all to replace the bulging caps on this Dynex 21" TV, I'm going to do it anyway to keep it out of the landfill. I'll probably end up giving it away but fixing stuff feels good. And yes, I will be replacing all of those PS caps.
