    FAKE "Rubysun" in spotlight led!

I bought 6 of those two and a half years ago and 2 months later they started to fail... I would just return the faulty ones and get new ones for free, but not anymore.

So I disassembled 1 to see if I can fix it. There is a 25V 100uF Rubysun capacitor inside!

    Pics coming soon....

And the recapped led light... Unfortunately it still flashes and then stops completely...

I wouldn't call them fake... the font is different, they have their own series on them... don't see any intent to trick people into thinking they're rubycons...

As for the rest... try each led separately, maybe one's shorted ... check the rectifier diodes (if that's what they are on the back), maybe one's broken and the chip doesn't like AC current coming in and that causes blinking.

Can't find much on the SB42509. Appears to be the driver IC and that's the problem. Perhaps some research to find a 1A LED driver IC?

Google turned up the attached file from:

            (Now defunct) manufacturer's site:
            http://web.archive.org/web/200502142...ce/3-chanp.htm

And that would be a Silan SD42509 (which for some reason is not directly linked on their website but a little Google found the page):

Re: FAKE "Rubysun" in spotlight led!

They all die the same way. After some minutes of use they start flashing in long periods and then they stop lighting.

There are 4 "S4" smd diodes forming a bridge rectifier and another one on the other side.

Do you think that the IC is the one going bad or the diodes?

Btw the Fake capacitor was not bad: 97uF 0.84 esr

Well.. you could easily test the diodes.. if they're fine, it's that strange IC

The diode mode of my multimeter says they are ok... But I tested them in circuit.

freeze spray on the ic would likely tell you.
but i bet one of the led's is opening up.
seems i have seen those same led's do that in cheap flashlights.iirc they are seoul semiconductor or edison opto.luxeon knockoffs.

The Rubysuns are not fake, but they're crap anyway. I had some computer speakers from 1998 with Rubysun caps in the amplifier. The speakers kept getting quieter over the years, and replacing those caps made them nice and loud again... until the speakers blew.

One of the leds was failing open and made all of them blink.

Now it is completely open. In fact, if I press the faulty led with my finger it lights, but then opens again.

I am wondering if I can solder a resistor in place of the open led and use the other 2.

Yes, it would not look nice

hmm looks like the board has pads for cree xlamp as well as luxeon style packages.
i would be tempted to upgrade.with all the progress made in the last few years and 100 lumem/watt parts around i would give it a shot.you might double its output.

No. There are 2 very thin wires that could possibly break due to heat...
