Connection or disconnection of any cables should always be done with the set powered off.
The flat ribbon cables all have some form of clamping mechanism.
The one in photo 1 of 2 above is to press in both sides of the connector, ie on the left and right side of connector which should release the connector allowing you to withdraw it without damage.
Other than the backlights being on do you have sound or does the set respond in any way to the remote.
