I have similar problem witha 2007 42" Vizio LCD. Opened it up but don't see any obvious problems. This unit has intermittent flashing with it happening 95% of the time. It does however never flash when I give it no signal. It shows that blue screen with the words "no signal" floating around the screen. I'm wondering if this means its not the power supply board. Any ideas/comments? Thanks

did you check the caps on the inverter boards? had the same problem with another model vizio and turned out to be the inverter caps. esr was off scale.

Check and see if your TV uses these inverter boards if the LCD panel is made by LG.

I'll have to open it up and check. I remember two boards on either side the back panel that I seem to remember being directly attached to the LCD panel itself.

Sorry to bump this very old thread but I need some advice. I'm looking at my boss' vizio vx42l right now. It has same problem with screen flashing. I think its the caps on the inverter boards. I don't have a multimeter so I can't test the caps. I'll buy one today when I go out. All 4 caps are rounded on top. Not flat like the ones on the power board. Is this a physical indication that they are bad? Thanks

Yes, those sound bad.
Do not use capacitors from radio shack or other retail stores as they will fail in short order or not work at all.
Panasonic FC/FM/FR work well, Digikey and badcaps.net should sell them.

OK I looked at the data sheets and see that the ripple current is significantly different. I contacted Digikey and changed the order. Thank you Tom. You just saved me from looking like I didn't know what I was doing. These are the ones I'm going to use.

Well, I put the new caps in about a week ago (Panasonic FCs) and its been working great ever since. Thanks again for the help.

I had the same problem too. And replacing the caps fixed it. Before it had Blue flickering backlight. The power supply voltages were fine. I tested it with new caps that were correct uf but the voltage rating was too high that made the cap too large to fit where I needed it to. Normally a higher voltage cap of the correct uf is fine but the space will not allow it. I sar the bulges on the cap then turned on computer to see what the forum had and there it was! Great Job Guys

I used Panasonic FCs. Here is a link for them at digikey. This thread brought me here as well and revived my long lost hobby.
