Sony KDL-46S4100 Vertical black line..Screen damage?

    Hello all,

    I found a free working Sony KDL-46S4100 46" TV.
The problem is it has a vertical black line that starts at the bottom of the screen and runs up about to the middle of the screen.
The line is even noticeable when the TV is powered off, so I'm guessing this is some kind of not fixable screen issue. Maybe a coating coming off from cleaning the TV with a fluid? or something delaminating?
Whatever it is it's not on the outer part of the screen it's like its on the inside or between some layers.

Before I harvest the boards and recycle the rest is there any hope of repair and if not what do you all think caused the issue?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas

Yes, this looks like a broken panel. If it were tab bond issues, the vertical line would run the entire vertical height of the screen. Gut it and sell the parts

Look hard at the panel use a flashlight and magnifying glass if needed, if it's damaged it should be obvious if you can't tell take the panel off and look at the other side and the diffuser sheets and backlights since you will be in there, keep sheets in order and be VERY careful with the flimsy panel, sometimes they break if you even sneeze, It can be hard to tell without looking deeper.

Maybe some caustic liquid has drop inside degrading the internal polarization film, i dont know but the internal one usually has a gloss finish so it's not a foil but a coating, you can try maybe to stick a piece of external one took from a cracked screen and rotated with the right direction. Before doing this ensure it is not only simple removeable dirt.

I finally got around to tearing the TV apart today. It was surprisingly easy to get the LCD panel out.well done Sony.
The backside of the panel was a bit hazy (TV came from a smokers home) so I cleaned it thoroughly with eye glass cleaning wipes.
Looking at the backside of the panel I could not see the line at all, but looking at the front side I could see the line clearly. It looks like whatever is causing the line is a layer below the outer panel.
I didn't see any sign of physical damage from a impact or crack of any kind.
While I had the panel out I tried heating where the line is with a hot air gun and rubbing it with a soft cloth and it made no difference.
I ended up putting the TV back together and will probably stick it out in the garage and use it for watching sports or youtube vids when I'm repairing something.

          thanks

One question, if you watch at the front side of the glass matrix and see against the light reflection, could you see some surface opacity where there is the line? I had a monitor with similar defect, the damaged areas was in a shapes of liquid bloches with the liquid path to the bezel.. Maybe the front polarizer is the one ruined. I know there are polarizers on the market.

sorry for the delay in replying..holidays ugh!

anyways when I look at the line on the TV (powered on playing a movie) up close it kind of looks like smeared pixels around the outer edge of the line.

Also after a bit of google research it seems that sony , atleast on some older models, had quite a few problems with the polarizer lifting in certain spots.

I would try to replace the polarizer, but from the videos I've seen it can be quite the task to remove the old polarizer and leftover adhesive.
Plus on ebay the listings for TV polarizers ask what pitch you want when ordering..How would I find out the pitch of my TV?

                thanks

Pitch?? They means Dot Pitch? :-\
The polarizer film change i think is a very challanging task .. to remove glue i suggest the orange fruit shell (sorry my english). To put on the new one i thought this technique,
                  1) place the film on the glass and perfecly center it on, now fix it in place with some pieces of tape but only on an half
                  2) lift the other half of the film that will come with a protective second film, then remove approx half or less of it and cut it, then cut a tight stripe of it and reattach it to the border of the removed area, this stripe is to handle the border with nitrile gloves without stick it on,
                  3) now take the roll, that is sold for this purposes, and starting from the center begin to attach the film, the extreme bevel is kept lifted by the second end.
                  4) when arrive next to the border remove the stripe and attach until the border.
                  5) now remove the tapes , lift the covered half of the film, separe the rest of the protective film and do the same with the roll and this half.

If you can get an old monitor or a tv with cracked screen when you will remove the film from the tv, remove the film also from this spare screen and put it on the tv to be repaired so you can see if a new polarizer can fix the problem.
