Does it Seem Like You can Make More Money Just Selling TV Parts on Ebay These Days?

....Instead of buying boards, and reviving the TVs, and
then going through the LONG process of selling them, it seems
easier to just sell the parts on Ebay!

This is all because the cost of brand new flat screen LCDs
    have fallen once again!

    I just saw a brand NEW 39" for $165, and a 50" for $250
at Walmart! THIS HAS OBVIOUSLY AFFECTED HOW MUCH
USED FLAT-SCREEN TVS GO FOR ON CRAIGSLIST!

It seems like the good times are kinda over for TV repair
people, right? It seems like the only way to really make
decent money, is if you can troubleshoot the TV at the
component level, and avoid buying an expensive replacement
    board on Ebay!

THESE BRAND NEW TVS ARE TOO CHEAP!

It's swings and roundabouts. Selling parts on ebay to people who think it may be this part faulty or could be that part faulty and when they receive it and doesn't cure their fault inform you that the part you sent is faulty. You are left with covering the cost of the return postage and once received having to check that it hasn't been damaged by the buyer. All this is in addition to the costs already incurred in organising and sending it off in the first place. You do make money but sometimes it's hard work.
I've even had power supplies and mainboards returned because they are not identical to the one to be replaced even though there are good quality pictures provided alongside them on ebay.

I am now extremely selective in purchasing sets for repair and only buy what I believe will make a decent return. The only problem with this is that there are so few decent sets put up for sale at a reasonable price.
Willing to help but I'm no expert.

in the internet age, most people have become "diy tv repair people"... that is at the board level which is kind of what the shop does (ie. swap boards).... BUT the "diy'er/owner" doesn't have the "loaded labor rate". Hence, if they are successful in the "repair" with a board or two replacement, then that's the route they take and of course, that route follows a path to finding boards at best cost (ie. ebay or otherwise). Otherwise, as you have noted, cheap full tv replacement is the alternative thereafter.

Of course, selling boards is not without peril as then it becomes an issue of the buyer claiming the board was bad and demanding a refund IF it doesn't solve the problem which they most likely don't fully understand or have fully troubleshot.

I don't think there is any money in any "commodity repair" service these days... maybe phones / tablets / computers where some people get an "attachment" or have some personal information that is "invaluable" for them.

someone is selling brand new un opened new 32inch lcds on my local gumtree £100.00 each so yes you can get more money by fixing a set then stripping it and selling seperate boards etc but with ebay you will always get returns as people order wrong board or claim they didnt recieve it.

Here in Oz we have much less choice and board sellers must live in LA LA land asking $150 for a board for 8 year old set. I did a plasma recently with board from a realistic seller for $40 but in the past have purchased boards from Poland, UK and US. With the latter and also here postage is high. I sometimes advertise on Facebook local buy/sell site to take away large nonworking flat screens and usually get one or two but don't fix to resell but give away to deserving people. For me at 79 years old its just an interest to keep brain active.

The above is key. If you want to survive and make money for a living, you need to find a niche recovering something valuable. Think baby, wedding pictures, company reports, etc.

Another area is virus/malware removal, password recovery, data recovery. People will always get a virus/malware and removing them and recovering their data can also pay nicely. Most people will not have backups when their hard drive crashes.

Smart TVs that connect to the Internet will, not may, get virus/malware one day. It is only a matter of time because the manufacturer always drops software support and doesn't bother patching the software to fix a vulnerability.

Low cost manufacturers will likely install a generic OS and there will never be any updates for it.

I have an inexpensive Android phone that runs 4.4.2. It has and never will get an update from the manufacturer. It has 100s of vulnerabilities. The only "smart" aspect that I use the phone for is the GPS functionality and a couple of benign off line games.

Hi Guys, I have been rehabbing TVs for about 3yrs now. I found out that if you plan on selling boards on ebay its best to sell complete sets that way the DIY flipper gets his TV working. I find that the best way to find used TVs are paper delivery and trash people. Once they find out that after all their work of taking apart TVs they only get a few dollars, they take my offer. I came up with less than a dollar per TV to sell boards to a recycler plus they have to rid of all the waste. My collectors are happy getting $5 to $25.00 a TV all depends on the TV. Plus I will fix any TV they want for cost of parts if needed. I turn over about 15 to 20 TVs a month.

Selling on ebay is no fun. All they have to do is say it was defective or not as described and you have to give them back their money. If you get your board back you have no idea what they did to it. You tested it in a tv that you no longer have so you have no idea if it works anymore. Ebay is quite competitive. I only do it to get rid of excess. If you figure your time to list, pay ebay 10%, paypal several percent, shipping costs and time it takes to prepare it for shipping it's a hard way to make anything.
I assume no responsibility for any stupid suggestions I might post.

I don't understand well other posts unfortunately but i want only to say that here in Italy there is been from Jan 2016 to today a sad decline of the resale prices on used tv's, i have never bought a board to repair those tv i have bought broken and resold good, now i have to resale a 55" LED that 3 years ago was bought new at 1300 euro, now i can't take even 450.. on the other side reselling board can be made only by experts, if you are good diagnose problems on a tv, you know if a board works or not, so no reason for the buyer to return a board. I have resold some boards, some are been sold in few days with a good bargain, some others at more than a year are sitting here without any request. Needs luck..
