See post #5 to see what the resistor looks like, it is on power supply board.
The question is, what is the TV/ Boards not doing?
What kind of testing have you done and did you read the whole thread?

That's what I thought. I just wanted to make sure before tearing it open. Nudged it a tad and TV turned right back on. Thanks!

Just reporting another 45VE5 saved by this thread. It had sat around for a good year or more and I just cracked it open and found no standby power and everything dead on the power board.

Found this thread and went straight after that RY6000 relay and found that holding it down while plugged in turned on standby power which then made the power switch work and the TV fired right up.

Cleaning the relay didn't help anything and I couldn't find my soldering iron so I just used electrical tape to hold the relay down for good. I tested it with the kill-a-watt and found the draw on standby with the relay held down is ~0.5 watts. If this doesn't hold I'll do the bypass fix posted above but I believe taping it accomplishes the same thing.

Not necessarily, I think it could also be a resistor or something that energizes the relay. I'm not the best with electronics troubleshooting at this level so I didn't go much farther than what's in this thread.

Seems like a common issue though, never would have got it without this thread.

If R6016 is open then there will no Voltage to feed the bridge rectifier D6000 so there will be no standby Voltage, the relay is used for bypassing the resistor when TV is turned on because you do want to have 6.8 Ohms resistor in series with the load, in standby the resistor does not dissipate much heat but when TV is on then resistor will dissipate lots of heat that is why it is bypassed by the relay.
If you want to bypass the relay contact you can just bridge the two solder pads of the relay contacts, no need to cut any trace and reroute the Hot and Neutral traces which is not a good idea.

Great, thanks! My electrical tape fix didn't hold up, so ended up just bridging the relay pads as you suggested. Back up and running for good.

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what the point of this circuit is in the first place, if bypassing it causes no problems?

Just to let you know that your modification saved another Sony KDL-46VE5
I cut the trace and added the 2 jumpers on the power board and now it REVIVE !

A big thanks to you.

I found this TV on my street, saved from the trash.

I found multiple places that still had stock of the needed power PCB, most at a cost of USD ~$100 with shipping to Canada. Most had exactly the same quantity available, so were probably just storefronts with the same supplier. My friend wasn't sold on putting that much money into an old TV and possibly still ending up with it not working, so I proceeded with my earlier plan.

The lower trace to CN6003 (the Energy Saving Switch) was severed, and a jumper was added to connect that point to one of the relay contacts (RY6000, just above the "R"). The upper point of CN6003 is already connected to the other relay contact. Finally, a jumper was connected between the two nearby test points, JL6523 & JL6524 to replace the switch.

When the Energy Saving Switch is ON, the TV's standby LED comes on and the unit behaves as expected. When the switch is OFF, there's no standby power and the remote cannot turn on the TV. Once the TV is turned on, the relay closes normally, so you could move the switch to the OFF position and nothing would happen. Power usage appears unchanged, about 3W in standby regardless of the position of the switch. The switch itself is sort of redundant in this configuration, but I thought it best to have a way to bypass the hack in case the unit is left unattended for a long period of time but not unplugged.

This is not the way to repair this problem, Just replace the open R6016 resistor and relay.

End results, though.

After six more years of service, the original device was retired. While the screen was still good everything else was failing - audio output full of static, all digital inputs dead, needed an HDMI-to-composite converter to use it at all, video signal would drop out after being used for a few hours.

I suspect the power supply but no time to dissect it.

My 2009 KDL-46W5150 crapped out just as I was trying to re-home it. No Power, No click, No nothing.

I want to thank you for the insight to fix the TV. Mine has an APS-247 Power Supply. Sure enough, the 6.8ohm cement in-rush resistor was open. I had a 50W 6.0ohm power resistor which I jumpered across the open one. The rest of the TV is fine.

Neither the exact relay or resistor appear to be available. Therefore, I bought a new Power board for about $35. Waiting on it to arrive.
